Portugal claims 2nd UEFA Nations League title after thrilling win over Spain
Munich – Saba:
Portugal has won the UEFA Nations League title for the second time in its history, defeating Spain 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation and extra time. The final of the continental competition was held last night at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.
This marks the fourth edition of the UEFA Nations League, and Portugal's second triumph, following their inaugural victory in 2019.
Spain's goals were scored by Real Sociedad players Martin Zubimendi in the 21st minute and Mikel Oyarzabal in the 45th minute. Portugal staged comebacks each time, with Paris Saint-Germain defender Nuno Mendes finding the net in the 26th minute, followed by veteran star Cristiano Ronaldo in the 61st minute before he was forced off due to injury in the 88th minute.
The match remained tied through extra time, leading to a penalty shootout. Portugal's players successfully converted their penalties, while Spain's substitute Alvaro Morata missed his team's fourth spot-kick, sealing Portugal's victory.
In the third-place match, France secured a 2-0 victory over hosts Germany in Stuttgart last night, with goals from Kylian Mbappé and substitute Mickael Oliseh.
This achievement adds a third major international trophy to Portugal's cabinet, following their 1-0 victory over France in the 2016 European Championship and their 1-0 win against the Netherlands in the 2019 Nations League.
Nuno Mendes was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance in both attack and defense, just eight days after winning the Champions League title on the same pitch.
