Derry City beaten by Bohs thanks to early penalty
Derry City fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bohemians at Dalymount Park on Friday evening. A Dayle Rooney penalty that was awarded with less than a minute on the clock was the difference between the sides in Dublin.The Candystripes finished the game with ten men and they are now winless in their past three games. This result combined with victories for St Patrick's Athletic and Shelbourne sees them drop down to sixth.Tiernan Lynch's plans were immediately thrown out of the window when Rob Hennessey pointed to the spot just seconds into proceedings when James Clarke's strike was adjudged to have been handled by Mark Connolly.It looked to be a harsh call but Rooney didn't care and he dispatched a perfect kick high to Brian Maher's right. Derry did ride out that early storm and did not take on any more damage but struggled to respond at the other end. Michael Duffy managed to get to the by-line on the left and whipped in a dangerous cross but it was flicked away well by Rob Cornwall.At the other end, Kevin Holt did well to block Ross Tierney's strike and the Scottish defender was breathing a sigh of relief when his giveaway was not punished by Clarke who dragged wide. The former Drogheda man had another good chance just a minute later but couldn't keep his effort from the edge of the box down. The Candystripes had the last chance of the first half in stoppage time when Duffy laid the ball off nicely for Paul McMullan but Crystal Palace loanee Sean Grahan bravely diverted his shot away.
Despite a triple change for the away side at the break, Alan Reynolds' hosts started the better in the second half too and had the first chance. Jordan Flores met a corner at the front post but his powerful header flashed wide. Having survived that, the visitors went up the other end and felt that they should have had a penalty of their own when Bohs captain Dawson Devoy leaned into Paul Mullen in the box. The Derry bench was apoplectic and their frustration grew when Mullen nodded Ronan Boyce's cross over just before the hour mark.Having already lost Shane Ferguson to injury in the first half, Lynch had more bad injury luck in the second half when half-time sub Ben Doherty limped off having only returned from an a injury layoff last week.His replacement Robbie Benson was involved immediately and was fortunate that the referee believed his foul on Tierney was outside the box. The former Dundalk man then came inches away from a leveller shortly after but, under pressure from Niall Morahan, couldn't connect with Adam O'Reilly's inviting ball across the box.The visitors were in the ascendency and another replacement Dom Thomas caught McMullan's delivery flush with a volley but Grahan was in the way again as he cleared off the line. However, their task was hindered as Benson's eventful evening continued in the worst way. With eight minutes remaining, he was shown a second yellow card less than 25 minutes after coming on.That and Mullen's caution for a dive shortly after summed up a frustrating evening for the men from the Brandywell as, despite Carl Winchester stinging the palms of Kacper Chorazka in stoppage time, they enter the international break on back-to-back defeats. Next up is a home game against Galway United on 13 June.

Footy legend Nick Riewoldt has taken aim at the AFL for not demoting executive general manager of football Laura Kane sooner, labelling them 'social justice warriors'. The AFL announced last week that Kane's AFL football operations role will be split into two roles, with the 34-year-old no longer overseeing key football areas. Kane has become a lightning rod for criticism this season over issues such as the Willie Rioli saga, the standard of umpiring and AFL miscommunication around what happened when Collingwood player Lachie Schultz was concussed in a game against Fremantle. A separate head of football performance role is now being created . Kane will continue to oversee the AFL and AFLW, plus the VFL and VFLW and a newly formed medical and healthcare team that will oversee areas including mental health and concussion. It was confirmed on Monday that Lions chief executive officer Greg Swann will take on the role as the head of football performance. Riewoldt said Swann's arrival is long overdue. 'If the AFL weren't so consumed with being social justice warriors, Laura Kane would have been moved aside 12 months ago,' he said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters on Monday night. 'It is (a win) now. Either the role was too big, or she was the wrong person (for the job).' AFL chief Andrew Dillon insists there's nothing personal in the demotion of Kane. 'It was a big, big role,' Dillon told SEN radio on Friday. 'Decisions affect people but they're not personal. 'It's actually about what's the right thing for the AFL, not just for now, because the AFL's in an incredible position at the moment. ' ... We have now got a structure that actually allows us to continue to be successful for the next three to five years and that was the thinking.' In a separate interview on ABC Radio, Dillon rejected the notion that unconscious gender bias was a factor in Kane's dealings with clubs and subsequent demotion. 'It's not a gender thing,' he said. 'Laura has broken down a lot of barriers. She is an incredibly talented administrator.' Swann, who has been involved in club administration for more than 25 years, will oversee hot issues including the match review system, umpiring and laws of the game. 'I'm leaving to go the AFL to head up footy, I suppose, in the simplest terms,' Swann said when he confirmed his appointment to Lions colleagues. Lions coach Chris Fagan said Swann would be a major boost for the AFL. 'I'm really pleased for Swanny, it will be great for the game,' he said. 'He's one of those composed, calm and experienced people. We're obviously sad to lose him ... but things don't last forever. 'ln this instance, it will be a great win for the AFL. 'He'll help bring another angle to decision making that perhaps hasn't been there in recent times.'

Spain v France not a Ballon d'Or decider, says Yamal
June 2 (Reuters) - Spain's Barcelona striker Lamine Yamal has said the Ballon d'Or award won't be decided by performances on Thursday when he and France's Paris St Germain forward Ousmane Dembele take part in the Nations League Final Four. Irish manufacturing growth continues despite export challenges, PMI shows
DUBLIN, June 3 (Reuters) - Ireland's manufacturing sector grew at a solid pace in May as strong domestic demand offset a second successive monthly decline in export orders due to subdued sales into the United States and Britain, a survey showed on Tuesday. The AIB Ireland Manufacturing PMI fell a touch to 52.6 from April's 53.0, but was above the 50.0 threshold indicating growth for the fifth consecutive month. That marked the longest period of expansion in a bumpy two-and-a-half years for the sector. While domestic demand bolstered new orders, export sales contracted at the fastest pace in five months with manufacturers citing caution among U.S. clients and weaker sales to Britain, two of Ireland's main trading partners. New export sales have generally been weak since the middle of 2022 and only recorded growth on five occasions over that period, including most recently in February and March this year. Ireland's finance ministry last month downgraded its growth forecasts slightly for the domestic economy this year to 2% if a 10% tariff on European Union exports to the U.S. remains in place, or 2.5% if tariffs are removed. Tuesday's survey showed that input price inflation for the sector eased from April's 26-month high, though cost pressures remained high, linked to rising agricultural, commodity and raw material prices. Exchange rate appreciation against the U.S. dollar helped mitigate some import price pressures. Employment increased, with hiring reaching its fastest pace since January, reflecting rising workloads and improved business activity expectations. Around 39% of surveyed firms anticipate increased output in the year ahead, while 9% foresee a decline.
