KCAL Cares spotlights resources offered by Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles
The Challengers Clubhouse of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles offers a tennis academy where court time and lessons are a part of the curriculum. It helps expose them to a sport that, without the clubhouse, they might not ever have the chance of trying.
"These kids get to play tennis at least once or twice a week from the age of 5 all the way to age 18," said Alejandra Liera, site director at the Challengers Clubhouse.
Yahuzar aims at being on the court all day, perfecting his game and becoming a better competitor.
While Yahuzar discovered his superpower on the court, other kids are developing gifts and talents elsewhere at the Challengers Clubhouse.
Liera said beyond the tennis courts, there's a massive gym, classrooms, game rooms and impressive memorabilia left by high-profile supporters.
"It takes a community to keep this going," Liera said.
The Boys and Girls Clubs operate year-round, providing a safe place for kids to come when they're not in school. They not only offer opportunities like the Challengers Clubhouse but also nourishing meals to prevent hunger and that can facilitate focus.
Charlie has been a member of the Boys and Girls Club since kindergarten.
"They help us grow and learn and improve my reading, my math and my writing," Charlie said.
Fourth grader Haley wants to be a broadcaster when she grows up. She interviewed KCAL News Sports Anchor Darren Haynes about his work.
Hayley has not only learned resilience here, but she's made friends and discovered her superpower.
Even though summer has just begun, the Boys and Girls Clubs are already preparing to outfit these kids for back to school and they're asking the public to pitch in.
"We are in need of materials like pencils, scissors and sports equipment," Liera said.

French qualifier Terence Atmane said his Saturday Cincinnati Open semi-final against world number one Jannik Sinner will remain his brightest tennis memory despite absorbing a 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 loss to the defending champion. The 23-year-old who credits mental training with helping him evolve from a racquet-smashing Tour wild child to a serious contender, defines himself as something of a tennis Renaissance man, with a multitude of interests off the court. "I'm a tennis player but I also collect Pokemon cards and always look for good coffee places on the tour," he said. "I love Japanese culture and food. "I have three cats waiting for me at home in France. I like space, the universe and this world that we live in." While he donned a local Cincinnati Reds baseball cap after wins over top 10 opponents Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune this week, Atmane said he would won't have time to take up an invitation from some fans to attend a game. "I have to get to New York as soon as possible," he said post-match. The number 136 who will rise inside the top 70 after this event, called his showing "absolutely insane. "I can't believe I played the semi-finals here," he said. "Today will be a good memory for me which I will remember for a long time." "I had to give Jannik something, it's his birthday," he said. "I had brought some from France. I'm a collector - it was the perfect gift." Atmane then put up a poised fight in the opening set before Sinner pulled away in the second for victory. "He was just better than me," Atmane said. "He took all the responsibility in the second set and he was able to play his game. "If it's the world number one then its over already. Rookie Cade Cavalli earns first MLB victory as Nationals beat NL East-leading Phillies 2-0
WASHINGTON (AP) — Cade Cavalli earned his first major league victory, James Wood hit a two-run double, and the Washington Nationals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 on Saturday. Cavalli struck out five and scattered seven hits over seven innings for Washington. The last-place Nationals have won three of four. Trea Turner had three hits for NL East-leading Philadelphia, which was shut out for the eighth time this season and lost for the fourth time in five games. Cavalli (1-0) was Washington's first-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft and debuted in August 2022. He made only one start with the Nationals because of a shoulder injury, and didn't make it back to the majors until Aug. 6, after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023. In his third start with Washington this season, Cavalli allowed only one runner to reach third. The 27-year-old right-hander retired the final eight batters he faced and needed only 90 pitches for the longest outing of his career. Washington didn't get a runner past second against Phillies starter Taijuan Walker (4-6) until the fifth inning, when Dylan Crews walked and moved to third on Brady House's single. Both runners scored when Wood doubled into the gap in right-center. Jose Ferrer pitched two innings for his second save. After J.T.
