Treaty United's Madison McGuane named Premier Division Player of the Month

RTÉ News12-06-2025
Teenage star Madison McGuane has been named as the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division Player of the Month for the month of May.
The Ireland Girls' Under-16s captain becomes the first Treaty United player to win this award after being selected ahead of Shelbourne's Mackenzie Anthony and Wexford's Ellen Molloy.
McGuane scored twice in the side's three games last month, both from the penalty spot, including a clinching goal in their win over Galway United, which moved the Limerick club back into the play-off race.
The dynamic youngster has impressed with her performances in what is the Limerick native's debut season at senior level.
Treaty United manager Sean Russell praised the midfielder by saying, "Madison has been excellent since the start of the season. She's shown that she is more than capable of making the step up to senior level.
"For such a young player, she plays with great maturity. Her attitude matches her ability and I have no doubt she will continue to develop and get better."
It has been a great month for McGuane as she captained the Republic of Ireland girls U16s in the UEFA Development Tournament in Finland and picked up the women's U17 Player of the Year at the FAI International Awards.
McGuane follows Emma Doherty of Galway United and Kelly Brady of Athlone Town as this year's SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division Player of the Month winners.

TWO League of Ireland red cards have been overturned following successful appeals through the FAI

Two decisions have been overturned on the same League of Ireland weekend AMPLE APPEALS TWO League of Ireland red cards have been overturned following successful appeals through the FAI SLIGO Rovers goalkeeper Sam Sargeant's red card against Shelbourne has been overturned after a successful appeal. The 27-year-old was deemed to have handled the ball outside the penalty area against last season's Premier Division champions. Advertisement 2 It was a very tight call for the officials to make 2 Steven Healy was sent off for a challenge on Billy O'Neill A slightly over hit through ball by John Martin aiming for Ellis Chapman in the 84th minute went all the way through to the English goalkeeper. Under severe pressure from the Shelbourne substitute, Sargeant was forced to deal with the ball right on the edge of his box. Referee Rob Harvey had deemed the former Leyton Orient and Waterford keeper to handle the ball outside of his penalty area and showed him a red card. 20-year-old Conor Walsh came on for the dying minutes of the contest to make his 7th league appearance of the season having had a six game run as first choice before Sargeant found his form again. Advertisement The game finished 2-0 with Boyd having doubled the champions lead just minutes before the incident, after Ali Coote fired a brilliant strike past Sargeant early in the second half. Sligo Rovers appealed the decision to show their goalkeeper a straight red. The appeal was successful for the Bit O'Red after an Independent Appeal Committee deemed the decision unfair. A League of Ireland statement read: "An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has upheld Sligo Rovers FC's appeal. "For the wrongful dismissal following Sam Sargeant's red card in Sligo Rovers FC's SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture versus Shelbourne FC on 2 August 2025. Advertisement "In accordance with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Sam Sargeant will be available for Sligo Rovers FC's next fixture versus St. Patrick's Athletic FC on 10 August 2025." This has come just days after Treaty United's midfielder Steven Healy had a fruitful appeal of his own for a wrongful decision against Bray Wanderers. Jose Mourinho wipes away tears as he pays heartbreaking tribute to Porto's Champions League-winning captain Jorge Costa Just 25 minutes into the fixture, the 21-year-old was deemed to have denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity when 'fouling' Bray Wanderers' Billy O'Neill. O'Neill found himself between Healy and Ben Lynch before hitting the deck just on the edge of the Treaty United box. Advertisement The match referee Oliver Moran took a look at his linesman before giving Healy the card two days before his birthday. The Shannonsiders were 1-0 up at the time of the dismissal and went on to lose the game 3-2 after a Richard Ferizaj 95th minute winner. The three points would have been crucial for cementing Tommy Barrett's side's place in the play-off spots. Treaty United appealed the judgement straight after the game and it only took until the following morning for the result of the appeal to come through. Advertisement With the quick turn around of a Monday evening fixture against Kerry FC it was important for Treaty to ensure their star signing from Galway United was available for selection in the Munster derby. The appeal was triumphant as Healy was made eligible to face Colin Healy's side, which they went on to draw 1-1 and Healy was booked for his involvement in a melee.

Brawl breaks out during heated League of Ireland derby as FIVE cards are shown in fiery injury time

A win would have been huge for Treaty United to boost their promotion chances KICKS OFF Brawl breaks out during heated League of Ireland derby as FIVE cards are shown in fiery injury time A BRAWL broke out in Treaty United's first division clash with Kerry FC in the Markets Field. An overly aggressive, cynical foul from Treaty's Dean Owens on Ewan Lee sparked a large scuffle in the 92nd minute. The 22-year-old was then dragged down from behind by the shoulders from Owens to end the attack. The Kingdom's Cian Brosnan appeared to take particular offence to the challenge by Owens as he ran at the player before pushing him to the ground from behind. Darren Nwankwo responded with a shove of his own before trying to de-escalate the situation. Advertisement The heated gathering was eventually broken up after substitutes and coaching staff stepped in. Five yellow cards were dished out in injury time alone during the feisty Munster derby. Owens received a yellow card for the initial challenge while Treaty's Steven Healy and Kerry's Brosnan were booked for their involvement in the brawl. Oran Crowe and Sean McGrath were also booked for the visitors in the closing stages of the contest. Advertisement This incident comes at a tough time for Kerry as it's been just a week since the release of two first team players. The axed players were former PSG goalkeeper Mathyas Randriamamy and Shane Maroodza who they signed just FOUR days previous. The 21-year-old came through the Leicester academy before signing for Huddersfield and Barnet. Maroodza played just one game for Colin Healy's side. The fight came a short while after Lee forced Kerry's equaliser when he put pressure on Ben Lynch at the back post from a long throw in by Samuel Aladesanusi. Advertisement A second half glancing header from new signing Patrick Ferry on the end of an Evan O'Connor cross had opened the scoring, putting the Shannonsiders into the lead. Former England star Joe Hart reveals how close he came to a career in cricket The Super Blues had to make an early substitution in the first half with Limerick footballing legend Lee J Lynch being forced off with injury after just 24 minutes. Treaty United find themselves fifth in the table and just inside the promotion play-off places with a five point cushion over Wexford FC with 10 games to go. With just one win in their last eight league games, Tommy Barrett's side have fallen away from the pack leading the league table as they are now 15 points adrift from Bray Wanderers in third. Advertisement Kerry's promotion chances have taken a hit after yesterday's must win game finished level. They now sit eighth, 10 points behind their Munster rivals with just 10 games to go.

Shamrock Rovers' Rory Gaffney: We'd back ourselves even without a 10-point lead

After scoring their winning goal away to Galway United back in early April, Shamrock Rovers striker Rory Gaffney said he'd be worried if he was one of the Hoops' competitors. Gaffney reiterated that sentiment on Sunday after his brace of goals delivered a 2-0 victory over Derry City, a result which pushed their lead out to 10 points with 10 games remaining in the season. Their bid for a historic five-in-a-row came a cropper last year after a chronic early summer injury crisis, which saw them fall miles off the pace. A late-season surge wasn't enough to reel in the wire-to-wire league leaders Shelbourne, who clung on to seal their first title in 18 years in dramatic circumstances. Drama may be in shorter supply in the 2025 run-in, however, with Stephen Bradley's side now overwhelming favourites to claim a fifth league title in six years and a 22nd in the club's history. "We spoke in Galway in April and I said I'd be worried if I was the other teams," Gaffney told RTÉ Sport's John Kenny after Sunday's statement win over Derry. "We were ahead of the curve. We're ahead of the curve again. We've 26 games played and we're on 52 points. Two points a game. That normally wins the league. "You don't want to be arrogant or disrespectful to any other team. But we'd back ourselves if everyone was starting on no points with 10 games to go. "So, why wouldn't we back ourselves with 10 games to go and a 10-point head start, plus our goal difference." "You don't want to be arrogant or disrespectful to any other team. But we'd back ourselves if everyone was starting on no points with 10 games to go." In the eyes of many observers, Sunday's 2-0 win over Derry slammed the door shut on the prospect of a close title race, even if Bradley sought to play down the idea. Following a strong burst of form in June, Tiernan Lynch's side had emerged as the likeliest threat to Shamrock Rovers but they've dropped points in the last few rounds and fell 11 points off the pace and behind Bohemians after the defeat on the weekend. Gaffney opened the scoring shortly after half-time, meeting Josh Honohan's cross at the back post. His second was more eye-catching, chasing Dylan Watts' ball down the left wing, cutting inside Alex Bannon and drilling a shot in off the far post. He said: "Wattsy gave me a look to say 'get on your bike'. Made the run down the side, it was a lovely ball. "I like to chop inside. He's (Bannon) a new defender to the league so he mightn't have seen that one before. He might be aware of it next time." Sunday's haul took Gaffney's tally of goals in the league to eight for the season. The 35-year old Tuam-born striker, who won the 2022 PFAI Player of the Year award, missed the vast majority of the 2024 campaign with injury and was forced to sit out the early part of this season. "I just tried to prove my fitness in January," he said. "I had a long year last year. I basically missed all of last season. I didn't want to be driving down the road from Galway, breaking down again and struggling to get to the level I needed to. "The only thoughts I had was trying to be fit and seeing if I could get back to the level that you need to be at to be a professional footballer in this league. "I'm delighted with how I'm feeling. I haven't missed a training session since I signed this season. "I haven't played a whole lot at the start of the season but I'd be doing a whole lot of extra training. "I've played one 90 (minute game) this season. I don't normally go past 60 or 70 minutes. "The last thing you want to do is pick up an unnecessary injury. Look at the bench that we have, the youth and the speed we have to come in, Michael (Noonan) and John (McGovern), I'm only happy to pass the baton onto one of them." In a commanding position in the league, Shamrock Rovers have two more rounds to navigate to the return to the Conference League league phase, which they qualified from so impressively in 2024. This week, they head for Kosovo for the first leg of their tie with Ballkani, with the winners facing the team to progress from the Larne-Santa Clara fixture. "It's a step into the unknown," he said "I don't think anyone has played a team from Kosovo before. I know a couple of their players were playing for Shkupi and Celje, teams we've come up against before. I'm sure they'll be good, they always are. "You don't know what you're going to get so there's always that bit of uncertainty in the first leg. "Over there, the weather is going to be warm. Thankfully, it's a grass pitch, not an astro this time. "We'd back ourselves that if we turn up, we'll give a good account of ourselves and be there or thereabouts. If we bring them back to Tallaght, we'll be a match for anyone."
