Ahmedabad filmmaker missing, feared dead in plane crash; was neither onboard nor in hostel
A local filmmaker has been reported missing since the Air India plane crash in Gujarat's Ahmedabad, with his family fearing he may be among those killed on the ground. Although he was not among the 242 passengers on board the ill-fated flight, his mobile phone location was last traced to within 700 metres of the crash site, and he has not been seen since.
Mahesh Kalawadia, also known as Mahesh Jirawala, a resident of Naroda who directed music albums, went missing shortly after the London-bound flight crashed into the campus of a medical college in Meghaninagar on June 12, according to news agency PTI. The crash killed 241 passengers and crew and 29 people on the ground.

His wife, Hetal Kalawadia, said her husband had called her around 1:14 pm that day to inform her that a meeting in the Law Garden area had ended and he was heading home. However, he never returned.
"My husband called me at 1.14 pm to tell me his meeting is over and that he is on his way home. However, when he did not return, I called up on his phone but it was switched off," Hetal said.
The family has submitted DNA samples to help authorities identify whether he was among the ground victims.

She added that police traced the last location of his phone to an area just 700 metres from the accident site. "His phone got switched off around 1.40 pm (a minute after the ill-fated flight took off). His scooter and mobile phone are missing. All this is unusual since he would never use that route (as per the last location) to come home," she said.
Authorities have confirmed that several bodies from the crash site were severely charred or disfigured, making identification difficult.
DNA testing is being used to identify the deceased. As of Sunday, 47 victims had been identified through DNA matching.

A senior official said that all staff related to ground handling of the aircraft have been questioned, and their statements have been recorded. On June 12, Air India Flight AI 171 belonging to Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 fleet crashed within a few seconds after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. Last Thursday, the aircraft lost altitude soon after taking off at around 1.30 pm. The pilot had issued a 'mayday' distress call to ATC. On Monday, a team of Boeing reached the crashed site for investigation. Authorities successfully retrieved the Cockpit Voice Recorded (CVR) and the second black box. The first black box was discovered on Friday. An investigation under the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is underway. (ANI)

Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani accorded Guard of Honour; mortal remains handed over to family with state honours
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], June 16 (ANI): The demise of former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, has deeply saddened the entire state. On Monday, the State Government accorded him a solemn and dignified farewell, honouring his legacy and distinguished service to public life with utmost respect, as per a release from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO). Today, in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the mortal remains of the late leader were accorded a Guard of Honour as per the official government guidelines. Following the tribute, the mortal remains were respectfully handed over to his family members, including his wife and son, with state honours. The entire process was conducted solemnly and in strict adherence to government protocol. The State Government paid tribute to former CM Vijay Rupani, remembering his visionary leadership, integrity, and compassion in public life and his contributions to public welfare. At Civil Hospital, CM Bhupendra Patel was joined by Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, Cooperation Minister Jagdish Vishwakarma, Rajya Sabha MP Mayank Nayak, along with several political leaders, senior officials, and representatives from various institutions and communities who gathered to pay their respects. Earlier in the day, the mortal remains of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani were brought to Rajkot on Monday for his final rites, scheduled to take place at Ramnathpara crematorium in the evening. The funeral procession will begin from his residence at 5 pm. The Rajkot Police have implemented comprehensive security measures and traffic restrictions to facilitate the procession. DCP Crime Parthraj Singh Gohil advised citizens to use designated parking areas during the event. 'Today, the last rites of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani will be performed. That's why VIPs from across the state will move here. In this regard, we have closed the main route decided for the procession. Rupani was among the 241 who died when the London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff, colliding with a doctor's hostel complex near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. On 12th June, the state was engulfed in grief following the passing of former CM Vijay Rupani in the tragic plane crash. Meanwhile, in the Ahmedabad plane crash, out of the 242 people involved, the sole survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries. UP Man Performs Symbolic Wedding With Dead Dead Before Her Cremation
Maharajganj: In an unusual gesture, a 29-year-old man on Monday performed a symbolic wedding with his deceased fiance just hours before her funeral in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district. The woman, identified as Priyanka Madhesia (23), allegedly committed suicide at her residence last night. Priyanka, who allegedly hanged herself to death, had an argument with this man named Sunny Madhesia. The woman's family has, however, not lodged any police complaint yet. As the mourning family members and villagers gathered earlier in the day in Krishna Nagar locality of Nichlaul to prepare for the woman's last rites, the atmosphere turned surreal when Sunny stepped forward with vermilion (sindoor) in his hand. Amid chanting of mantras led by a local priest, he solemnly applied sindoor on the deceased woman's forehead and walked seven ritualistic circles around her bier in front of stunned onlookers, including women, who captured the episode on their mobile phones. "This was my way of fulfilling her last wish...I loved her very much," said Sunny after performing the symbolic wedding. "We were going to get married in November. Even though she is no more, I wanted to make her my wife the way we had both dreamt," he added. The symbolic marriage was performed with full Hindu rituals, including an offering of 'aarti'. Sunny later lit the funeral pyre, a role typically reserved for the spouse or a close male relative of the deceased. The local police confirmed the rare sequence of events. Nichlaul Police Station SHO Akhilesh Kumar Verma said the symbolic marriage was carried out with the consent of both families. "It was a mutual decision. Sunny also expressed his wish to organize her 13th-day death ritual (terahvin), which traditionally concludes the mourning period," Verma told PTI. Sunny and Priyanka had been in a relationship for over three years. Sunny, who had first met Priyanka when he moved in as a tenant in her home, later opened a mobile repair and accessories shop in the area and continued to live nearby. The relationship was accepted by both families and the couple was formally engaged. The wedding was scheduled for November 29, 2025. The Station House Officer (SHO) said that a minor argument, however, broke out between the couple on Sunday evening. Priyanka, who was found hanging in her room later that night, was rushed to the Community Health Centre in Nichlaul, where doctors declared her dead on arrival, he added. No formal complaint has been lodged by the family regarding Priyanka's death, police said.
