Why Filmmaker Ari Frenkel Is All In On His Jewish Rom-Com Feature
The worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust and the resultant explosion of global anti-Semitism that followed Israel's ongoing campaign against Hamas in Gaza served as a major wake-up call for Frenkel. 'I want to marry a Jewish woman,' he says. 'I want to have a at least one Jewish baby. I never even thought about kids or dated Jewish women. Now, I'm like, 'Oh, I guess this matters…''
It also led to a profound shift in his view of Hollywood and the trajectory of his career. Once so rabid about booking acting gigs on mainstream film and television projects like Silicon Valley, American Crime Story, and No Hard Feelings, Homecoming, and Transparent, Frenkel has since become disillusioned with the storytellers he once idolized.
'Suddenly, some of the people I've worked for and with have have put out such heinous, awful commentary publicly that I'm embarrassed to have worked for and with them on things that may be my most reputable, commercial work,' he notes. 'It really shattered my idea of what matters in terms of 'Success.' Who f—ing cares if you're in a movie with a big director if that director hates you and your family, and wants them to die? I think it's been very sad and disheartening to see so many people I admire say such ignorant things about my people on a daily basis.'
The jagged ideological division splitting his industry, paired with the uncertain future of entertainment and the concerning rise of artificial intelligence has inspired Frenkel to realize his debut feature film, See You on the Other Side, before it's too late. 'I fear that with the way AI is going so fast and the way the industry is going and the fear of [whether I'm]To that end, he's 'blown up his life a little bit,' renting out his apartment in Los Angeles, selling his car, and moving back to his parents' house in New Jersey to make the indie production, which he hopes to start shooting in the fall on an estimated budget of $300,000-$500,000, though prospective investors are still welcome to join. 'I burned the ships. I'm all in,' he stresses. 'I believe in this thing to a degree that people might say is delusional or insane. But I'm also like, 'Isn't that usually how it gets done?''
Frenkel, who wrote the screenplay, will also direct, produce, and star in the semi-autobiographical Jewish rom-com that sounds like a mix between Paolo Sorrentino's This Must Be the Place and Shawn Levy's This is Where I Leave You. The story centers around a struggling musician (who just so happens to be Israeli-American) looking to fulfill the wishes of his late father by tracking down the man's ex-girlfriend in order to tell her the bad news. 'And in his search, his own ex-girlfriend comes into his life,' teases the filmmaker. 'It's the parallel of these two relationships during that time, and it follows him throughout the year of grief, focusing on this Israeli-American family.'
However, the Jewish/Israeli aspect is not the main focus of the film. If anything, it's an incidental detail that Frenkel hopes will show that Jews and Israelis are not a monolith.
'I've seen a lot of American Jewish family stories, but I've never seen them about an Israeli-American family,' he says. 'I wrote this movie that has nothing to do with the conflict, anti-Semitism, Israeli tech, Mossad or anything like that. It's just a family going through a human experience of love and loss. I think that that is how we can connect to other people, to show that we are just like you. We are all the same. I truly believe that about any culture."
While he hopes See You on the Other Side leads to more directing opportunities in future, Frenkel's immediate hope is to change hearts and minds with an honest and heartfelt piece of cinema. 'This is what I got," he concludes. 'I've literally put all my eggs in this basket, because I really believe in it and think it's important. And even if one person is impacted in a positive way from it, then it was worth the time.'

'We chose the side of Israel': Arad mayor bans artists who signed petition to end war
"In accordance with the decision of the Arad Municipal Council, the municipality will not allow incitement against IDF soldiers," the mayor stated. Arad Mayor Yair Maayan announced on Monday that the artists who signed a petition calling for an end to the war in Gaza and the return of hostages will not be allowed to perform in the city. "In accordance with the decision of the Arad Municipal Council, the municipality will not allow incitement against IDF soldiers," the mayor stated. 'These artists are similar to the list of reserve service refusers who have not served in the reserves for years," he added. "We have chosen the side of the IDF soldiers and the State of Israel." Petition signed by Israeli artists The petition was reportedly signed by over 1,000 Israeli artists, celebrities, and cultural figures, including Chava Alberstein, Gidi Gov, and Oshik Levi, and urges an end to the conflict, Ynet reported. 'Our country is starving the people of Gaza to death and contemplating the forced removal of millions of Palestinians from the Strip,' the letter reads, as quoted by KAN. 'We, Israelis dedicated to a peaceful future for our country and our Palestinian neighbors, write this with grave shame, in rage, and in agony.' Singer and Fauda star Idan Amedi, who was injured during his reserve service, criticized the petition, "A group of privileged people echoing stupidity, ignorance, and lies. There is no other army in the world that operates in such a densely populated area with such a low civilian casualty rate. This is proven - go check," he wrote. 'Go into a tunnel. Fight for one day like tens of thousands of reservists, and then sign a petition. You're worthless - I've had enough of you.' Eyal Sher, CEO of the Israel Festival and one of the organizers of the petition, responded to the backlash: 'A message to all the critics: take a moment to step back and focus on the core message. The petition isn't meant to cause division or stir conflict among different groups in Israeli society," Ynet quoted. He continued, "It aims to express values of humanity, compassion, and a desire to end the war, bring the hostages home, and begin healing and recovery, both in Israel and the region.'

‘Fantastic Four' Final Weekend Box Office Worse Than First Estimated
The Fantastic Four: First Steps' final box office numbers for its second frame ended up being even lower than its already disastrous projected take. On Sunday, the likes of Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter all projected that the film would earn $40 million domestically in its second Friday to Sunday frame, a 66% drop from its first weekend of $115.6 million in business from July 25-27. As it turns out, even those estimates were a bit too generous. Box office trackers The Numbers and Box Office Mojo both reported the final weekend numbers on Monday for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the film ended up earning $38.6 million from Aug. 1-3, which is a 67% drop in business. To date, The Numbers and Box Office Mojo reported, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has earned $197.1 million domestically and $170.2 million internationally for a worldwide tally of $367.4 million. Directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, The Fantastic Four: First Steps had a production budget of $200 million-plus, according to Variety, but its marketing spend has not been divulged. 'Superman' Appears To Be On Its Way To Winning The 2025 Superhero Box Office Crown Given The Fantastic Four's significant drop in business in its second weekend, it appears that Warner Bros.' Superman from director James Gunn is well on its way to being the top superhero movie of 2025. The first release from Warner Bros.' DC Studios — where Gunn and Peter Safran serve as its co-CEOs — Superman earned $125 million domestically in its opening weekend from July 11-13. Luckily for Gunn and Safran, Superman's business only dropped by 53% in the film's second weekend in theaters as it pulled in a healthy $58.4 million from July 18-21. Per Variety, Superman had a production budget of $225 million and $100 million was spent on marketing. As of Monday, per The Numbers and Box Office Mojo, Superman has earned $316 million domestically and nearly $235 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $551 million. Starring David Corenswet in the title role, Superman's box office gross to date far exceeds the global grosses of the first and second superhero movies released in 2025. Both released by Disney Marvel, Captain America: Brave New World finished with a global tally of $413.6 million ($200.5 million domestically and $213.1 million internationally). Thunderbolts*, meanwhile, has earned $382.4 million globally ($190.2 million domestically and $192.1 million internationally) to date. The film is close to being done with its theatrical run, however, having only played in 20 venues over the weekend.

One Marvel Star Maybe Just Took Himself Out of the Running For James Bond and Nobody Noticed
Once Denis Villeneuve was named as the director for the next James Bond movie, rumors immediately started flying as to who he might want as the new 007. At the top of that list of possible actors was Tom Holland, best known to millions as the incumbent Peter Parker in the Spider-Man and Avengers films. But now, it's possible that Holland has quietly taken himself out of the running for Bond. Here's why. Will Tom Holland be the next James Bond? While it's possible that Holland could still be cast as James Bond, his commitments to other projects, including various Marvel films, might prevent that from happening. In fact, in a new interview with the U.K. edition of GQ, published on August 1, 2025, Holland indicated he will be taking a break from acting sometime in 2027. "You can't be in every movie, and you can't do your best work when you're burnt out," Holland said in the interview, referring to the idea that he wants to avoid burnout. "I've got a slightly busy year next year, and then I'll probably take a bit more time off in 2027. We'll see." The busy year next year almost certainly refers to the fact that Holland will be promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters a year from now, on July 31, 2026. But, does that mean Holland won't be shooting a new film in 2026 or 2027?The Next James Bond Movie's Possible Release Date As of this writing, Amazon MGM has not nailed down an exact release window for the next James Bond movie. But 2027 is possible. Assuming the film was cast by the end of 2025, and went into production sometime in 2026, that means a release date of anytime in 2027 is reasonable. At least hypothetically. So, if Tom Holland is taking "time off" in 2027, that seems to suggest he's not going to play James Bond. Unless, of course, the movie is done by that point, which would mean he could maybe still be in the running. Still, with so many other actors' names being floated for the role, it seems more likely that Holland won't become both Bond and Peter Parker within the same couple of years. And, until there's a big bombshell dropped by Amazon, the next face of 007 will remain in the Marvel Star Maybe Just Took Himself Out of the Running For James Bond and Nobody Noticed first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 1, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword
