The Chicago Cubs should be aggressive at the trade deadline.
At 46-32, the Cubs hold a 3.5-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers for the National League Central and look well-positioned to go on a run this October. This crucial 2025 campaign coincides with contract years for star outfielder Kyle Tucker and President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer.

Neither of them is in Chicago to waste time, and adding a marquee third baseman should be atop the front office's wishlist. One option and a best fit, according to Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan of ESPN, is Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman.
Here is what they had to say:
'Bregman has been an elite big league hitter since he entered the league in 2016 but has leaned more into power this year, with his highest isolated power since 2019. Most of his underlying power indicators (barrel rate, maximum exit velo, average launch angle and hard hit rate) are at career highs. His $40 million salary -- and the chance to opt into two more years at $40 million annually -- significantly shortens the list of teams that would take on his deal.'
A blockbuster Cubs-Red Sox trade could look something like this:

Boston receives: 3B Matt Shaw, C/1B Moisés Ballesteros (No. 3)

The Cubs have been notoriously stingy, especially given their big city, big market resources, under this ownership regime. They were outbid for Bregman's services this past offseason, but have a chance to capitalize on their miss.
Bregman is currently on the 10-day injured list with a quad injury, but is not expected to miss much more time. It came at an unfortunate time as the 31-year-old is having one of his better seasons as a Big Leaguer. Bregman is batting .299 with a .938 OPS, a 159 OPS+, 11 home runs, and 22 walks to 42 strikeouts over 51 games.

Chicago does have former No. 1 prospect Matt Shaw at the hot corner, but his .219 batting average, .610 OPS, and 77 OPS+ are not going to cut it for a team with real title aspirations. Flipping him for an instant upgrade could put this team over the top.
Ballesteros is another top prospect for the Cubs. Still, he is easier to sacrifice with Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya (who is on the shelf for now) having phenomenal seasons at the plate.
Boston also gets to replenish its already strong farm system and induce a mini reset on this underwhelming season.
This deal would be contingent upon Bregman opting in and sticking with Chicago. There are risks involved, but Hoyer and co. are in no position to take the conservative path.

Ryan Helsley Among Four Cardinals Pitchers That Could be Traded

Ryan Helsley Among Four Cardinals Pitchers That Could be Traded originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With the MLB trade deadline nearing, pitchers will be a hot commodity for teams looking to improve their postseason chances. The St. Louis Cardinals have an abundance of hurlers that could be dealt. Advertisement ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan recently ranked the top 50 trade deadline candidates around the league. Closer Ryan Helsley was among four St. Louis Cardinals pitchers that could be traded by the July 31 deadline. Helsley was ranked No. 23 on their list, with a 30% chance of being shipped. The best fits are the Dodgers, Phillies, Yankees, Tigers, and Diamondbacks – who the Cardinals could see by their side in the wild card standings as the season continues. His 1.444 WHIP is one of the worst of the Cardinals bullpen, and the worst of his career. As mentioned in the article, hitters have caught up to Helsley's notorious fastball, which he relies on more than any other pitch. Helsley is on contract through the end of this season. With a down year from last year's Trevor Hoffman Award-winning season, it may be time for the club to part ways with their long-time closer. St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Helsley (56) throws a pitch during the ninth inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Blaze-Imagn Images An in-house guy who could move into Helsley's role could be Phil Maton, who has been the most reliable Cardinals reliver to this point. Maton is also listed as a trade candidate in the article, with his $2M contract up after this season. He is sure to be sought after by many contenders, though that includes the Cardinals themselves. Advertisement Erick Fedde was ranked No. 30 on the list. After being picked up by the Cardinals at last year's deadline, he is seen to have a 50% chance of being traded again. "Fedde's strikeout and walk numbers have regressed from his breakout 2024 season (after coming back from a stint in the KBO League), but he's allowing less damage on batted balls to keep himself in the rotation." McDaniel and Passan wrote. With it likely he may walk away in free agency after this season, it may be right to find a replacement for the veteran arm. Steven Matz is the final name on the list. After transitioning from the rotation, he has found more success in his command, limiting his walk rate to a career-best 1.3 per nine innings. He'd be a great fit for a team looking to make a run, but some concern of injury could still linger among the heads of other GMs. The story mentions St. Louis as a fit for pitchers Freddy Peralta, Merrill Kelly, and Reid Detmers. As a team that stands well over .500, the Cardinals could be seen as buyers at the trade deadline, which would limit who is to be dealt.
