Primark shoppers will spot big change to mannequins used in store

Daily Mirror29-07-2025
Every aspect 'carefully considered' to make the models feel like 'more than just a mannequin'
Primark will introduce its first seated mannequin, designed to represent a manual wheelchair user, in a selection of stores to enhance better representation of disability on the high street. Shoppers will see this in certain shops as the project takes off in certain UK stores and across parts of Europe.

The model, who will be named Sophie, was inspired by and co-created with British television presenter, disability advocate and wheelchair user, Sophie Morgan. The mannequin will take centre stage in displays showcasing Primark's Adaptive range, the first major women's and men's fashion collection on the high street designed specifically for those with disabilities, as well as its main fashion ranges.

Primark's Adaptive range, which launched in January, included wardrobe staples based on Primark's bestsellers, from trench coats and tees to jumpers and jeans, all with features designed around the needs of disabled people or those experiencing temporary disability. These include magnetic zippers, snap fastenings, waist loops and hidden openings for tube, stoma or catheter access. There is also a range of options for people who are seated, such as wheelchair users.

Sophie Morgan, co-creator of the mannequin, said: 'This project is incredibly close to my heart - it's been over 15 years in the making. To now walk into a major high street retailer like Primark and see a mannequin that looks like me is deeply emotional.
"Sophie represents more than just a mannequin, she's a symbol of progress and visibility. Working with Primark to create her has been a dream, every detail, from her posture to the design of the wheelchair as a natural extension of the body has been carefully considered to reflect the real lives of wheelchair users. I can't wait to see how people respond to her.'
The journey to bring the mannequin to life spanned over a year and was led by Primark's Visual Merchandising team. Sophie played a central role in the design process, from mood boards and body measurements to reviewing 3D models and visiting the manufacturing site for final approvals.
From the outset, both Primark and Sophie wanted to ensure the mannequin pose would be representative of a manual wheelchair user. In tandem, Primark's store design team worked with Sophie to develop a bespoke manual wheelchair prop that would work perfectly with the mannequin and be sturdy enough to withstand Primark's busy stores.
Ann-Marie Cregan, trading director at Primark, said: 'This is another important milestone in our ambition to make Primark a more accessible place to shop and work. From introducing a wider range of mannequins to launching our Adaptive clothing range earlier this year, we've worked hard to better represent the diverse communities who shop with us. Seeing the 'Sophie' mannequin in our stores is a proud moment and a reflection of the brilliant collaboration between our teams and Sophie.'

In 2024, Primark launched a series of commitments to make its business more accessible. These include offering more accessible products, creating inclusive store environments, fostering a culture of accessibility, ensuring diverse representation across its campaigns and working with organisations and charities that help to improve the lives of disabled people.
Earlier this week, the retailer announced a new approach to kidswear, bringing more inclusive, comfort-led features into its core ranges. Changes include removing neck labels from over half of its clothing, including sweatshirts, joggers and pyjamas, and introducing new seamless and flat seam socks, designed to offer a smoother, more comfortable fit.
Launching initially in 22 flagship stores across nine countries, Sophie will be used for displays in stores including Oxford Street East, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, and Leeds.

Shapermint brings its inclusive shapewear to the UK

Shapermint, the U.S.-based shapewear brand known for championing size inclusivity and unretouched campaigns, has officially launched in the UK. It is a notable expansion for a brand that has already served more than 12 million customers globally. With a product offering that runs from size XS to 4XL, and a portfolio of best-selling comfort-driven designs, Shapermint arrives on British shores with a clear message: compression doesn't have to mean discomfort. Founded in 2018, Shapermint is part of a broader wave of direct-to-consumer brands reshaping the intimates market. In the U.S., it has achieved mass-market success through distribution on Amazon and Walmart, riding a wave of changing consumer expectations around bodywear. British shoppers will now be able to access the full collection via the newly launched UK e-commerce platform. Where traditional shapewear once promised sculpting at the expense of comfort, Shapermint is selling a different proposition, soft, seamless, roll-resistant support that prioritises ease of movement. Its hero product, the All Day High Waisted Shaper Short, has been lauded for its breathable compression panels and ability to disappear under clothes — without the tell-tale signs of pinching or rolling. The brand's wireless bras, including the Supportive Comfort and Sweetheart Contour models, have developed a loyal following, thanks in part to influencers like British body confidence advocate Iskra Lawrence, who boasts over 5 million followers on social media. Shapermint's messaging, comfort-first, digitally native, and visually honest, reflects a wider shift across the lingerie and shapewear industry. Brands such as Savage X Fenty, Skims, and Good American (all of which offer sizing up to at least 4XL) have upended an industry long dominated by narrow ideals and restrictive garments. According to research firm Edited, size-inclusive lingerie lines have grown by more than 34 percent globally since 2020, with comfort now a key purchasing driver. Gabrielle Richards, Brand Director at Shapermint, explains the pivot: 'We're seeing a shift in consumer expectations around shapewear, it's no longer about squeezing into something restrictive for a night out. Today's shopper is looking for confidence-building pieces they can wear all day.' The UK market presents both opportunity and competition. Brands such as M&S, which dominates the domestic intimates space, have also expanded their shapewear ranges in recent years, and newer entrants like Skims have seen success with Gen Z and millennial audiences alike. Whether Shapermint's pared-back, comfort-first philosophy will resonate with British consumers accustomed to either high street price points or Kardashian-level branding remains to be seen. Still, in an era where the visual language of fashion is increasingly shaped by authenticity and access, Shapermint's arrival in the UK adds another voice to the growing conversation around bodywear that works 'with: the body, not against it. Summary Shapermint, a U.S. shapewear brand known for size inclusivity and unretouched campaigns, has launched in the UK, expanding its reach after serving over 12 million customers globally. Shapermint prioritizes comfort and ease of movement, offering soft, seamless support in sizes XS to 4XL, reflecting a shift in consumer expectations towards confidence-building, all-day wear. The UK market presents both opportunity and competition for Shapermint, as it enters a space with established brands like M&S and newer entrants like Skims, requiring it to resonate with British consumers through its comfort-first philosophy.

Mango scales up Mango Teen in the UK with its first store outside London

Madrid – Mango continues to drive its teen fashion line, Mango Teen, internationally with the opening of a new standalone store in the strategic UK market. The company has chosen to scale up operations for this line, launched in 2021 as part of its diversification strategy. This marks the first standalone Mango Teen store to open outside London, and within Scotland. Launched by Mango as a capsule collection and a pilot initiative for diversification in September 2020, Mango Teen became an independent chain by April 2021. The first physical points of sale were pop-up stores. During that same year, Mango began laying the groundwork for solid international expansion of its new Mango Teen line, selling its first collections in selected international markets online. The UK was one of these markets. Mango management reports that the strong performance of its young fashion line has remained constant since then. It has experienced even greater and more accelerated growth following the opening of the first standalone Mango Teen stores in 2024 in London, on Carnaby Street and in Westfield London. These two points of sale have helped the brand achieve greater visibility among young British consumers in recent months. Their increasing purchasing power and inclination to consume create an environment that Mango sees as particularly favourable for Mango Teen's growth in the UK. Based on this analysis and context, Mango management has decided to accelerate its Mango Teen growth strategies for the UK with the opening of new standalone points of sale. This decision has already been put into action with the opening of the third Mango Teen store in the country on Friday, 1 August. This new point of sale opened its doors inside Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow. It is the third standalone Mango Teen store in the UK, the first outside London, and the first in Scotland. 'Teenagers today use fashion to express themselves like never before,' says Berta Moral, global director of Mango Kids and Teen. 'As a result, we see a clear market niche for contemporary, youthful fashion at affordable prices.' Mango states that the UK market shows a growing purchasing power among British teenagers. Moral highlights that their collection of 'timeless basics and modern pieces with bold prints and quality fabrics is already connecting with this younger generation'. With the intention of taking advantage of all the opportunities that may arise from this connection, 'we are accelerating the expansion of Mango Teen in the UK with the opening of new standalone stores for teenagers and stylish new collections'. Annual double-digit growth From a business perspective, Mango management frames the expansion of Mango Teen in the UK within the execution of its new strategic Plan 4E for 2024 to 2026. This roadmap integrates the global expansion plan designed for Mango Teen. Its implementation led to a doubling of the number of standalone stores for the chain in 2024. The year closed with over 40 stores and an online presence in 95 markets. In terms of turnover, Mango Teen and Mango Kids closed the 2024 financial year with sales of around 293.19 million euros. This represents growth of over 19.18 percent compared to the 246 million euros generated by both lines in 2023. This rate is higher than the +18.84 percent growth experienced in 2023 compared to 2022 results. In summary Mango accelerates the international expansion of Mango Teen with a new standalone store in the UK. Located in Glasgow, this is the first standalone Mango Teen store in the country outside London and in Scotland. It demonstrates the growth strategy that the brand will pursue in the British market, taking advantage of the growing purchasing power of younger generations of consumers. With results presented jointly, Mango Teen and Kids experienced sales growth of +19.18% in 2024, driven by expansion and connection with young fashion consumers.
