
‘Work is a human endeavour': why the future of business will rely on the wellbeing of employees
Now a World Heritage site, many of Saltaire's 19th-century factories have been converted into flats and offices in a modern echo of a town created to support – and improve – the wellbeing of a workforce.
Today, the conversation about workers' wellbeing has moved on from 19th-century paternalism. But the focus on workplace wellbeing has been revived in a new, modern iteration – and arguably the business incentive to invest in maintaining a workforce fit in mind and body has only increased.
Attract and retain
The modern workplace is much more transparent than it used to be. Stories of workers' happiness – and dissatisfaction – spread, whether it's from a factory in Asia or a cubicle in Swindon. Additionally, as the workforce diversifies, employee standards and expectations have changed, with many seeing holistic wellbeing and supportive policies as a core part of what a workplace should offer.
'As a mother of two, I'm not bothered by your great nights out or free lunches, I want to know you've got my back if my kids are sick and that I can flex work to fit around schedules so that I don't have to choose between being a CEO or being a great mum,' says Vimla Appadoo, CEO of Honey Badger, a design and culture consultancy.
Psychologist and educator Dr Justin D Henderson is an expert on workplace burnout and wellbeing, and envisions a future of sustainable work environments built through multi-level wellbeing strategies.
'First of all, I think we should care about people,' Henderson says. 'The history of work has not considered human wellbeing as the front and centre,' he says. 'But work is a human endeavour. It's really important for organisations to remind themselves that workplaces are about relationships and relationships are about supporting wellbeing.
'The psychological stressors that you're subjecting yourself to for eight or 10 hours a day, every day, five days a week, has a collective erosion on our mental and physical health over time.'
This tanks productivity, creativity and engagement – but more importantly, it erodes our health too: 'Work stress has consequences to our physical health. It has consequences to our relational health when we go home, and has consequences to our psychological health.'
If workplaces want to avoid generating a burned-out, disengaged and unwell workforce, wellbeing must be a strategic priority – not just an add-on.
How tech can help
The transparency brought about by technology doesn't just expose its workings to the outside, it equips leaders to see through their own business and empowers employees to take control of their careers. Technologies like MHR's People First platform make it easy to schedule check-ins and analyse employee sentiment, as well as giving employees the tools, learning and insights they need to boost their own wellbeing.
A report from Wagestream has found that 70% of UK employees are worrying more about money. Giving employees real-time access to their payslips and wages ensures that they always know their own financial position. With MHR's real-time payroll system, employees can see exactly how much money they are earning as they are earning it, while its flexible pay initiative allows employees to access a percentage of their earned wages throughout the month, providing resilient and sustainable financial health.
'Tech and AI could help us do many aspects of our jobs that we might find incredibly stressful and time consuming,' Henderson says, resulting in 'people being able to engage in work that's more meaningful'.
The modern workplace now needs to adapt to the demands of the 21st-century: employees are expected to exhibit creativity, collaboration, problem-solving and empathy – and these skills will only become more valuable as machines take on more and more of the manual labour and basic administration. Having a healthy, fulfilled and financially resilient workforce is likely to become even more important in the future than it is today.
Beyond the office
Of the 90,000 hours most of us will work in our lifetimes, many will be outside of the workplace. Remote and hybrid working options have combined with complex lifestyles to result in a much more nuanced approach to the working day.
'The lines between work and home have become blurred, especially since the pandemic and the shift to home working,' says Appadoo. 'People don't see a split in time at work and time at home anymore, it's all just time and if businesses want to make the most out of their workforce they need to start supporting their employees to make the most out of that time.'
According to Henderson, the opposite of a burnout-oriented workplace is one of resilience: 'We have to establish a workplace culture that appreciates and validates people, knowing that policies and procedures may change, but those core cultures and values will not. Resilience is the combination of strength and flexibility.'
The modern workplace might be unrecognisable to the philanthropist employers of the 19th century. But they would certainly recognise the social and business value in keeping staff well.

FCA bans star investor Neil Woodford and issues fine of nearly £46m
The Financial Conduct Authority has provisionally banned a former star City fund manager and fined him and his former company almost £46 million. The financial watchdog said Neil Woodford put investors' money at risk. It said it will ban Mr Woodford from holding senior manager roles and from managing funds for retail investors. Mr Woodford will be fined £5.89 million and Woodford Investment Management (WIM) will be fined £40 million. Mr Woodford and WIM have referred the case to the Upper Tribunal for appeal. The former manager's flagship fund, Woodford Equity Income Fund (WEIF), was wound down in 2019 after investors tried to withdraw cash faster than the fund could pay out, amid concerns over its high exposure to illiquid and unquoted shares. The value of the WEIF had fallen from a high of more than £10.1 billion in May 2017 to £3.6 billion before its suspension. About 300,000 investors still had cash trapped in the fund when it was suspended. On Tuesday, the FCA said it had concluded that Mr Woodford and the fund 'made unreasonable and inappropriate investment decisions' between July 2018 and June 2019. The fund's sale of liquid assets and acquisition of illiquid ones meant WEIF was unable to meet rules in place at the time, whereby investors should have been able to access their funds within four days. 'WIM and Mr Woodford did not react appropriately as the fund's value declined, its liquidity worsened and more investors withdrew their money,' the FCA said. 'The FCA has concluded that Mr Woodford held a defective and unreasonably narrow understanding of his responsibilities.' The regulator said it found that Mr Woodford and his company's failings 'led to a significantly increased risk of the fund being suspended'. Steve Smart, joint executive director of enforcement and market oversight at the FCA, said: 'Being a leader in financial services comes with responsibilities as well as profile. Mr Woodford simply doesn't accept he had any role in managing the liquidity of the fund. 'The very minimum investors should expect is those managing their money make sensible decisions and take their senior role seriously. 'Neither Neil Woodford nor Woodford Investment Management did so, putting at risk the money people had entrusted them with.'

The subtle qualities of Florian Wirtz ready to help Liverpool evolve
The £100m man isn't thinking about being the £100m man. Although, should he and Liverpool achieve the success together that they hope they will, he will become the £116m man and – as things stand anyway – not merely the club record signing but the British record. Perhaps it helped him adjust to a world of sizeable, seismic fees when Bayer Leverkusen put a €150m (£130.3m) price on him Liverpool negotiated them down a bit, but the fee was still one to dwell upon. But not for Florian Wirtz. 'I don't think about it,' he said. 'I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter.' No pressure there, then. Or none that he puts on himself. It may be, of course, that the German only spends a few weeks as the biggest buy in Liverpool's history. They have already bid £110m for Alexander Isak, even if they have a reluctance to increase it after a swift rebuttal. A saga may deflect some attention from a signing who ought to lend plenty of excitement in his own right. Wirtz had played at Anfield in Leverkusen's colours, losing 4-0 in the Champions League last season. He enjoyed a first game in Liverpool's red rather more, a 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao on Monday. Nor did he have to spend too much time pondering a striker who might arrive. Not when he operated behind one who already has. Hugo Ekitike is another of the Bundesliga all-stars. Wirtz had faced the Frenchman, who could cost £79m. Now he is charged with supplying him. 'He is a really good player,' he said. 'It was a joy to watch him at [Eintracht] Frankfurt and I was really happy he signed to come to us. In the training sessions already he went well and also in the game we had some combinations that were good.' And Wirtz has been bought to combine; to create too. 'I will try to find the right places to be and the right spaces to get the ball and to be dangerous and create chances,' he said. His duties include being the creator-in-chief. As Arne Slot noted after the victory over Athletic, Liverpool have lost Trent Alexander-Arnold's creativity and while Wirtz operates in a different position, the German can compensate for the right-back's departure with his own invention. Wirtz can operate as a false nine or off the left, but Anfield's first vision of him was as a No 10. He was selected there, but given a licence to roam. 'I think I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me,' he said. Wirtz has the permission to go where he thinks he can cause most damage; that he has recorded totals in double figures for both goals and assists in each of the last two Bundesliga seasons indicates he is capable of inflicting a lot, and in various ways. Not every arrival from the Bundesliga has flourished in the Premier League, but Liverpool like to shop there. Jeremie Frimpong, Ekitike and Wirtz joined from German clubs this summer, Ibrahima Konate, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo in the recent past. Wirtz has plenty of teammates he could consult about switching divisions. 'They tell me it's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast,' he said. 'I am really looking forward to play [in the Premier League],' he added. 'There are some differences to Germany but I think there are also some things I can learn to make me better.' A slight figure, Wirtz make look an anomaly in the Premier League, surrounded by more strapping physiques. It is notable how quick Liverpool's arrivals are. It was also instructive Wirtz referenced his own running power. 'I just try to create chances and also work against the ball, so I can also run a lot, so bring this to the team and then with the ball I can make the team better and bring my teammates into better situations,' he said. He proved he had conquered the Bundesliga, inspiring Leverkusen to their first league title in 2023-24, winning the division's player-of-the-year award that season. He attracted interest this summer: from Real Madrid and Manchester City. Above all, from Bayern Munich. He chose Liverpool, in part because he could see himself in Slot's side. 'I came for that reason because I thought I could fit in this team,' he said. Sunday's Community Shield against Crystal Palace will provide a first competitive game to test that theory but so far Liverpool like what they see. And for Wirtz, the man unperturbed by that price tag, there is another kind of pressure. Liverpool won the Premier League without him, before a summer of vast spending. Now the expectation may be to do it again. 'Of course, the big challenge is to win the title again,' added Wirtz. 'And it is the most difficult thing.' But, once again, he sounded unworried.

Jersey Battle of Flowers: Taxpayers cover £120k debts for 2024
A total of £121,000 of taxpayers' money has been used to pay people owed money from last year's Battle of Chief Minister and Economic Development Minister said the decision to settle debts from last year's event, which saw an overspend of more than £150,000, was made because of the benefits to the community and the visitor a letter to the Chief Officer of the Department of the Economy Richard Corrigan, Deputy Lyndon Farnham and Deputy Kirsten Morel said the decision would allow groups to put on this year's scaled-down parade and future backlogged funds are additional to the £158,750 given to help fund the rerouted event set to begin on Friday. In the letter, the ministers said the main sum would be taken off future grants for the event."It is unfortunate that, despite the efforts of the new organisers and the grant funding already provided by the Department for the Economy, the success of the event should be imperilled due to ongoing challenges in resolving the 2024 overspend," they said."Having therefore considered the balance of risks and the great benefit that Battle brings to our community and visitor economy, it is our judgement that a grant to the Battle of Flowers Events Limited to contribute towards the settling of its outstanding debt is necessary in order to enable a Battle of Flowers Parade in 2025 and beyond."The money has come from the Chief Minister's Pilot £90,000 top-up grant, which was also given out in 2024, will not be recovered, the ministers added.
