Grandmother and grandson swept 4km out to sea on inflatable mattress
Footage shared by the Italian Coastguard on Sunday (29 June) shows a rescuer swimming out to the five-year-old with a rubber-ring around his shoulder as the child drifted off the western coast of Italy.
The grandmother had dived in to try and rescue him but strong currents meant she could not reach him and she herself became in need of urgent help.
The five-year-old was pulled onto a patrol boat, where he was reunited with his grandmother, who had been rescued moments earlier.
The Italian Coastguard urged the public to 'avoid using inflatable mattresses, flotation devices or small rubber dinghies in strong winds'.

Cliff-fall man rescued after night ordeal on rocks at Cawsand
RNLI crews rescued an injured man who had lain injured on rocks overnight after falling 60ft (18m) from a coastal alarm was raised by a passing kayaker who discovered the man on the rocks in Cawsand Bay in Cornwall on Monday, said the RNLI crew members went ashore to assess and stabilise the man who had fallen on casualty was moved to an all-weather lifeboat and handed over to an ambulance crew in Plymouth for further treatment in an operation with coastguards and police. RNLI helmsman Wesley Foster said: "This was a challenging rescue in a tough spot to reach. But, but thanks to great teamwork from all emergency services, we were able to get the casualty safely aboard and into the care he needed. "Huge thanks to the kayaker who spotted him and raised the alarm. "It really does show how important it is to look out for one another."

Firefighters battle Thatcham house fire for five hours
Firefighters battled for nearly five hours after a property caught Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) said it was called to Hartmead Road in Thatcham, Berkshire, at 17:53 BST on from RBFRS and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service (HIWFRS) put out the fire, which had also affected part of the neighbouring were no reports of any injuries, RBFRS said. The fire service said crews from Newbury, Theale, Hungerford, Mortimer and Whitley Wood were sent to the scene."Eight firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus used two main jets, two hose reels, the Aerial Ladder Platform and the Water Carrier to put out the fire," the spokesperson said crews left the scene after four hours and 57 minutes, then returned for a reinspection found "a small amount of carpet smouldering" and dampened it down.
