Demare Dezeurn of Bishop Alemany runs 100 meters in 10.32 seconds, second fastest in state

Demare Dezeurn said he runs track to help his receiving skills in football.
"This is for football to get me faster," he said before running the 100 meters at the Thursday's Mission League track and field finals on Thursday at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.

His coach at Bishop Alemany, Terrell Stanley, said he gave Dezeurn permission to run a fast time.
And that's what he did, waving his arms up and down at the finish and then learning his time of 10.32 seconds was second best in the state this season behind state champion Brandon Arrington of San Diego Mt. Miguel. He also ran the 200 in 21.11. His 100 time ties the league record set by Rodney Glass of Notre Dame in 2006.
Not bad for a sophomore.
He's had to be patient this season while training under Stanley, a new coach who wanted to improve Dezeurn's stride. He ran 10.38 seconds at the Arcadia Invitational behind Arrington and is on a path to keep lowering his times leading up to the state championships at the end of the month.

"He just has to wait a little longer," Stanley said.
Dezeurn has announced he's transferring to Palisades at the end of this semester to catch passes from quarterback Jack Thomas. He'll be the fastest receiver in the City Section.
Another athlete turning in a top performance was junior Ejam Yohannes of Loyola. He set a school record in the 400 with a time of 47.28 seconds. Sophomore Quincy Hearn of Notre Dame was second in 47.84.
Notre Dame's 4x100 relay team set a school record at 40.87. The team was Nikko Petronicolos, Hearn, Ehimen Oyamendan and Tre Fernandez.
Matthew Browner of Chaminade won the long jump at 22-8.

Bishop Alemany's Breelyn Newsome won the girls' 100 in 11.98 and the 200 in 24.57.

Malachi Fields Named Top Newcomer For Notre Dame By Lindy's Sports

Malachi Fields Named Top Newcomer For Notre Dame By Lindy's Sports originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Notre Dame's receiving corps is set to have, potentially, their most productive season in quite some time this fall. Year two of the Mike Denbrock offense will likely be more balanced than year one, in large part due to the personnel and makeup of the offensive roster. The Irish will have a one-two punch at receiver they haven't had in several seasons in junior Jaden Greathouse and Virginia transfer Malachi Fields. Both players were ranked in Lindy's Sports Top 20 wide receivers for 2025 and Fields was ranked as Notre Dame's 'top newcomer' ahead of this fall. Advertisement Fields spent his first four seasons playing wideout for the Cavaliers. He had a relatively quite freshman year in 2021, but at 6-4 220 pounds, his potential flashed at times. In 2022, he was poised for a breakout season, but it was cut short and he missed almost the entire season with a foot injury. Fields returned to the starting lineup in 2023 and broke out immediately. He finished his junior season playing 783 snaps, recorded 58 receptions, 811 yards, averaged 14.0 yards per catch and had five receiving touchdowns. Out of his 58 receptions, 39 of them went for first downs, he forced nine missed tackles and recorded 10 contested catches in 12 games, all according to PFF. The only blemish on his season long resume was the number of drops he tallied (6) in 2023. It was a part of his game that was quickly corrected in 2024. Last season, Fields finished the year with 701 snaps played, 55 receptions, 808 receiving yards, averaged 14.7 yards per catch and repeated his five touchdown performance. In less snaps, he became a more efficient player in almost every category. He recorded 12 missed tackles forced, 13 contested catches, 34 first downs and only dropped two passes all season long. Fields recorded three 100 yard performances, two of them back to back, in 2024. His lowest output of the season came in their final regular season game against Virginia Tech where he finished the day with two receptions for 20 yards. Fields shined against the tougher opponents on the Cavaliers' schedule last year. Against Notre Dame, he recorded four receptions for 81 yards. He tallied nine receptions for 129 yards against Louisville and three receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown against Clemson. Advertisement Fields will join Greathouse and the rest of the Irish receiving corps this summer. The offensive line will be a year more experienced, they will have a strong run game as a foundation of the offense and the quarterback under center this year will be more comfortable consistently pushing the ball down the field. Fields' presence will change the dynamic of the receiving corps for Notre Dame; it's not surprising that he was named the top newcomer for the Irish this fall. City Section football notebook: James Boyd is new coach at L.A. Jordan

Former L.A. Jordan quarterback James Boyd, a former City Section player of the year, is the school's new football coach. (Eric Sondheimer / Los Angeles Times) The City Section held its annual football coaches meeting Monday in the Rams' locker room at SoFi Stadium, and the newest head coach was introduced. It's 33-year-old James Boyd, who was a star quarterback and four-sport athlete at L.A. Jordan during his high school days, signed with USC as a defensive end and is returning to take over his alma mater. His high school coach at Jordan, Elijah Asante, is now head coach at Hamilton and said he expects Boyd to do a good job inspiring Jordan players because of his own success story. A lot of news came out of the meeting. Advertisement View Park Prep dropped its football program for the 2025 season. That might help nearby Crenshaw, which has struggled to fill its football roster. Terrence Williams has replaced Monty Gilbreath as the football coach at Gardena, which means the Marine League will have new coaches at Gardena, Banning, Carson and Narbonne. The only returning coach is Corey Walsh at San Pedro. After 13 years of trying, the Los Angeles Unified School District has approved schools to use student body funds to pay for HUDL, which helps coaches handle videos of players and games. Previously, coaches had to write checks, use personal credit cards or seek help from booster clubs. San Fernando and Sylmar have agreed to play their Valley Mission League game at the Coliseum on Oct. 17. There also will be a girls' flag football game and JV game. Advertisement The City Section has changed its mercy rule. If a team leads by 42 or more points at halftime, a running clock will begin. Also, if a team leads by 35 or more points in the fourth quarter, that leads to a running clock. Coaches and adults are facing increased penalties if they are ejected from games for unsportsmanlike behavior. Coaches are expected to receive a three-game suspension for being ejected. Parents who are ejected from a game will receive a three-game ban. The City Section sit-out period for transferring without moving ends on Thursday, Sept. 25. More teams have been playing on Thursdays because of an officials shortage, so this helps teams that would be at a disadvantage if the date was on a Friday. Official practice begins on July 28. Advertisement Schools must exchange rosters before games. There was a discussion about adding boys' flag football, but there was no consensus on what part of the school year would be viable and concerns were raised about whether it would further deteriorate 11-man rosters. Crenshaw coach Robert Garrett will start the season this fall with 290 career victories. Sign up for the L.A.
