Google's Sergey Brin Urges Workers to Return to the Office to Win A.I. Race
Since the 2022 launch of ChatGPT set off an artificial intelligence frenzy in Silicon Valley, Google has tried to reassert its role as an A.I. pioneer.
On Wednesday, Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, said the company could lead the industry in artificial general intelligence — when machines match or become smarter than humans — if employees worked harder.
'I recommend being in the office at least every weekday,' he wrote in a memo posted internally on Wednesday evening that was viewed by The New York Times. He added that '60 hours a week is the sweet spot of productivity' in the message to employees who work on Gemini, Google's lineup of A.I. models and apps.
Mr. Brin's memo does not represent a change to Google's official return-to-office policy, which requires employees to work in the office at least three days a week. A Google spokeswoman declined to comment.
Still, the note highlighted Mr. Brin's belief that A.G.I. — a long-sought goal in computing — could be within reach. And it shed more light on how he believes Google could achieve that technological leap.
'Competition has accelerated immensely and the final race to A.G.I. is afoot,' he wrote. 'I think we have all the ingredients to win this race, but we are going to have to turbocharge our efforts.'
He highlighted the need for Google's employees to use more of its A.I. for coding, saying that the A.I. improving itself would lead to A.G.I. He also called on employees working on Gemini to be 'the most efficient coders and A.I. scientists in the world by using our own A.I.'
More companies have ordered employees back to the office full-time to improve productivity. In September, Amazon said that its corporate employees must return to the office five days a week starting in 2025. AT&T, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs have also reversed hybrid-work policies.
Mr. Brin returned to Google after ChatGPT's launch, The New York Times has reported, to help the company navigate the difficult moment when it lost its advantage in A.I. (Google had developed numerous technologies that make chatbots like ChatGPT adept at writing things like poetry, code and travel plans.) Ever since, he has spent a lot of time with the company's A.I. specialists in its Google DeepMind division tasked with developing A.I., sometimes personally filing code requests.
In the two years since Mr. Brin returned, Google has reorganized its business, rebranded its A.I. and rolled out the technology across its popular apps — all in an effort to win the race against OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta and others.
Google has been releasing A.I. updates at a rapid clip, expanding the availability of Gemini 2.0 models to people who use the chatbot app with the same name just this month. Mr. Brin warned against employees working more than 60 hours a week, saying it could lead to burnout. He also criticized employees who haven't been contributing enough to the efforts.
'A number of folks work less than 60 hours and a small number put in the bare minimum to get by,' he wrote. 'This last group is not only unproductive but also can be highly demoralizing to everyone else.'

The agreement will also substantially expand Scale and Meta's commercial relationship to accelerate deployment of Scale's data solutions. In addition, Scale's founder, Alexandr Wang, is joining Meta to work on Meta's AI efforts. Wang will continue to serve as a director on the Scale Board of Directors and support Scale's ongoing work to unlock the power of AI and keep human values at the forefront. Scale will utilize the proceeds of the deal to accelerate innovation and strengthen strategic partnerships with customers. 'In addition, Scale will distribute proceeds from Meta's investment to Scale shareholders and vested equity holders, providing them with substantial liquidity as well as the opportunity to continue participating in Scale's success as ongoing equity holders of the Company. Following its investment, Meta will hold a minority of Scale's outstanding equity.' INVESTING IN XAI: Two dozen venture capital firms and other investors are buying about $250M worth of shares in xAI, according to internal documents seen by The New York Times ' Ryan Mac and Kate Conger. Current and former employees of xAI could sell a portion of their shares to investors including TPG (TPG), ARK Invest and Sequoia Capital under a tender offer, which values xAI at $113B, the report stated. AI CHIPS: Cloud computing startup Crusoe CEO Chase Lochmiller said the company plans to purchase roughly $400M worth of AI chips from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to add to its portfolio of computing power, reported Reuters ' Max Cherney. Crusoe is aiming to build a data center to house the AMD AI chips in the U.S. and will rent them to customers for building AI models and running applications, notes the report, which adds that the artificial intelligence data center builder plans to purchase roughly 13,000 MI355X chips and use a liquid cooling system.

Apple confirms iOS 26 with huge updates and major new features

Apple has confirmed what weeks of rumours had been indicating – its next wave of iOS is getting a big shift in its name, dubbed iOS 26 to match the calendar year during which the software will predominantly be active. That'll skip us from the current iOS 18 straight to 26, but from then onwards it should be a more logical annual change to the number. Alongside that big news, Apple also used today's WWDC to actually show off the new OS, featuring its all-new Liquid Glass design language. After talking up the fact that it hadn't enacted a major design change for pretty much a decade, Apple showed off how Liquid Glass will change the look and feel of your iPhone pretty comprehensively. The new "material" is basically a way of layering elements on your display naturally, with fun transparent effects that behave a lot like glass really would. The presentation showed off a range of glimpses of Liquid Glass in different settings, some of them very similar to the old design, and others more distinct. App icons have been refreshed, for example, but look extremely recognisable, as do many menu items and options. However, the Control Centre is now way glassier and eye-catching (whether you like it or not), while overlaid video controls also showed up much more obviously when demonstrated. Various key apps got big tweaks besides their design, too. The Photos app is going back to a tabbed approach, and the Camera app got a new lick of paint, too – much, well, glassier. The Phone app has a new one-page unified layout for all your favourite contacts, recent calls and voicemails in one place. It's also getting a call screening feature that will be familiar to any Google users, since it has boasted the feature for a while on Pixel hardware. Similar screening options will also come to the Messages app, along with the ability to add backgrounds to your group chats. It'll also get polls, all of which might make it even more of a competitor to the likes of WhatsApp, which has had some of these features for a while. There will be weeks of dissection of all the new tweaks and features that Apple showed off today, but the key knowledge that the software will be called iOS 26 is worth restating – hopefully this doesn't result in any confusion when upgrade time comes this autumn.
