7,000+ military, security troops deployed to protect top Mexican vacation spots

American tourists visiting Cancún and other popular vacation spots in Mexico are expected to witness an increased number of Mexican military and security patrols this summer amid increased cartel violence and crime targeting tourists.
According to Fox News, the Mexican government has deployed over 7,000 military troops and security officials to provide protection at the country's popular vacation locations amid rising crime against tourists and increased violence by cartels. The outlet noted that Mexico has deployed military troops and local security officials to top tourist locations over the past few years since 2021.
Fox News reported that the Mexican government announced 'Operation Summer Vacation 2025' on July 18 and confirmed that the deployment of over 7,000 security personnel would include the Mexican Army, Navy, National Guard, as well as local and state police officials to guard popular tourist spots, such as Cancún, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. According to Fox News, this year's deployment of over 7,000 security personnel marks the largest seasonal deployment the Mexican government has ordered for the protection of the nation's top vacation spots.

During a recent news conference, Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Epinosa told reporters, 'We will not tolerate abuses, illegal fees, or practices that harm individuals. To our tourism service providers, I reiterate: you are the best ambassadors of our state. Your conduct, your ethics, and your commitment will make the difference.'
Former Drug Enforcement Administration Senior Special Agent Michael Brown told Fox News that the presence of Mexican military troops in popular vacation hot spots may make tourists feel more concerned rather than better protected.
'You're sitting on a beach looking at soldiers. I'm worried about something happening. That really works against the concept of a vacation,' Brown told Fox News. 'If I'm sitting on a beach looking at the armed military, is that really going to make me relax?'
Brown added, 'The fluidity of Mexican organized crime, gang activity, is constantly moving from one side of the country to the next. Unfortunately, these high-end tourist areas represent an easy opportunity for organized crime to come, steal, assault, and rob.'

Search underway for missing American journalist in Norway after solo hike

A search operation is underway in Norway for an award-winning American climate journalist, Alec Luhn, who went missing in bad weather while on a solo hike in the remote Folgefonna National Park. Luhn, 38, who has worked for The Guardian, The New York Times and The Atlantic, was reported missing on Monday to the Norwegian authorities after he did not appear for a scheduled flight from Bergen to England. Luhn had been on vacation with his family in the days before he set out on the hike. In England, Luhn lives with his wife, Veronika Silchenko, an Emmy-winning television journalist, who posted on social media urging anyone who may have seen Alec to get in touch. He set out alone on the hike five days ago, on July 31, from the town of Odda on the northeast edge of the Folgefonna, a wilderness park in western Norway that is home to the country's third-largest glacier. Local police told Norway's public broadcaster NRK that a volunteer search and rescue team, as well as the police, sniffer dogs and drones had renewed the search for Luhn on Tuesday before being called off due to weather conditions. Bad weather the night before had forced the search with a helicopter to be suspended overnight, local police said. "The weather started to get really bad around midnight. At that time, it was not reasonable to continue the search up in the mountains," Tatjana Knappen, an operations manager at Western Police District, told NRK. Knappen said a strong gale was forecast to continue on Tuesday, but it was hoped there would be a possible window for the helicopter to operate. The search will continue again on Wednesday, police said, according to NRK. The Norwegian Red Cross said search operations had been ongoing throughout Tuesday. Seven Red Cross volunteers were taking part, it said, noting the search teams were local and familiar with the terrain, describing it as "particularly challenging due to difficult conditions and demanding weather." Silchenko said she had last heard from her husband on Thursday afternoon. Luhn sent a photo of himself and said that he was going to try to head towards a hiker's hut at Holmaskjer on the edge of the glacier, she said. Luhn said he had planned to walk from Holmaskjer to another hut at Breidablikk, and then to Bondhusbreen, during the four-day hike, Silchenko said. But she said it was possible his plans could have changed. It was unclear if he would have attempted to cross the glacier. Raised in the Midwest, Luhn graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2010 and worked as a foreign correspondent in Moscow for around a decade, primarily for The Guardian and The Telegraph newspapers. He later switched to focus on covering the effects of climate change. Luhn is a Pulitzer Center reporting fellow and currently writes for the Scientific American magazine. Along with a number of awards, Luhn also has two Emmy nominations. Luhn is an experienced hiker who regularly travels to remote and challenging environments as a reporter, also often spending his vacations seeking out wildernesses, his friends and family said. He has trekked as part of a scientific expedition deep in the wilderness in Alaska and visited the Arctic in both Canada and Russia. He has also worked in conflict zones, including in Ukraine and Somalia.

Major hotel chain faces backlash for allegedly outsourcing check-ins — to India

A Miami hotel is facing backlash over a viral video that claims the front desk was staffed by an outsourced worker to welcome new guests during the check-in process. In the video, a guest who booked a stay at a La Quinta by Wyndham was welcomed by a tall screen displaying a virtual front-desk employee — who allegedly was in India. 'Do you need one room key or two room key?' the worker can be heard asking in the video, which has more than 2 million views since being posted on Saturday. The guest replies: 'Two, just in case I lose one.' The hotel customer then signs a form on the screen using their finger. 3 A traveler staying at a La Quinta by Wyndham hotel was allegedly checked in by an outsourced, virtual worker. @languageguy1/Instagram The interaction led social media users to slam the hotel chain for outsourcing jobs to overseas workers. 'More American jobs outsourced overseas. At some point this should just become illegal. If you make money in America, you should hire Americans,' one user wrote in a post on X. Another sniped: 'What hotel, so I can be sure to avoid it?' Some frustrated users even called on President Trump to target the practice by slapping tariffs on US-based companies that outsource jobs to overseas staffers. A spokesperson for La Quinta Inn, which is owned by Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, told the Daily Mail that it is actively investigating the matter. 3 'Do you need one room key or two room key?' the worker can be heard asking. @languageguy1/Instagram 'All La Quinta hotels are independently owned and operated under franchise agreements and required to have a team member at the front desk at all times.' Representatives for Wyndham did not immediately respond to The Post's request for comment. The chain has several La Quinta locations in the Miami area. It's unclear how widespread the practice of outsourced virtual front-desk employees is at La Quinta hotels and other chains. Wyndham does offer mobile check-in for some guests, according to its website. A video posted to YouTube in February appears to show the same large tablet screen being used by an outsourced worker in a Wyndham hotel in Bonita Springs, Fla. 3 Outraged social media users were quick to slam the hotel chain on social media. @languageguy1/Instagram 'I checked into a hotel by talking to a man on a screen in the entryway. I scanned my ID, swiped my credit card, and the machine provided me a key,' the user who posted the video wrote in the caption. Another social media user said they had a similar experience with a virtual front-desk employee at a hotel in Dublin. 'Honestly, it was a lot quicker than dealing with front desk staff, and it prints out your keycard,' the hotel guest wrote in a post online. Meanwhile, a hotel in Amsterdam allegedly used a fully-automated check-in process, where guests fill out a form on an iPad, take a key card from a pile and tap it on a reader to activate it, according to another user on X. 'There's really no reason for these jobs at all in today's age,' they added.
