Solution to Evan Birnholz's Aug. 17 crossword, ‘Sound Off'

Would you believe that I've crossed a pretty big milestone in my puzzling life? Today's crossword is the 500th crossword published in The Washington Post since I began writing puzzles for it in December 2015. That's a lot of puzzles, and many more clues — at least 70,000 of them by my quick back-of-the-envelope math. Of course there are a few crosswords in that 500 that I didn't write since there have been guest constructors on occasion, but I still count 'Heroes Welcome' from Dec. 6, 2015, as Puzzle No. 1 from my time with The Post and today's Aug. 17, 2025, puzzle ('Sound Off') as Puzzle No. 500. Let's keep it going, shall we? I'll be hitting my 10th puzzle job anniversary in December, and Puzzle No. 600 is off on the horizon in mid-2027.

Chappell Roan Misses Her First No. 1 By One Space

Chappell Roan has spent the past several years leaping from indie pop fame to true superstardom. She has scored massive hits on a number of Billboard charts, but there are still a handful of rankings where she has yet to reach No. 1. Her latest single, 'The Subway,' brings her closer than ever on a number of rosters and helps her hit new career highs, even as it just barely misses out on becoming the champion on one of the most competitive song tallies in the United States. 'The Subway' Launches at No. 2 'The Subway' starts at No. 2 on the Streaming Songs chart. That ranking lists only the most successful cuts on the major streaming platforms in the U.S., like Apple Music, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and several others. 'The Giver,' 'Good Luck, Babe!' and 'Pink Pony Club' Roan has never earned a No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart, though she has come close on multiple occasions. 'The Subway' marks her fourth trip to the top 10. 'The Giver' and 'Good Luck, Babe!' were previously tied as her highest-rising wins, as both stalled in fourth place. 'Pink Pony Club,' one of her most famous tracks, also reached the region as it peaked at No. 6. Another cut from her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, the upbeat 'Hot to Go!,' almost cracked the tier, but instead it stopped at No. 12. 'Golden' From KPop Demon Hunters Leads Again Only the biggest song in America keeps Roan from her debut leader on the Streaming Songs tally. 'Golden,' taken from Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters, leads the chart yet again, as it's not just the most-streamed tune in the country, but also the most popular when it comes to general consumption. Chappell Roan's New Top 10 Smashes 'The Subway' is an instant top 10 success on every Billboard ranking it debuts on this frame. The cut earns its loftiest start on the Streaming Songs tally, while it kicks off its time on the Hot 100 at No. 3 and opens on the Digital Song Sales ranking at No. 4. Looking worldwide, 'The Subway' enters the Billboard Global 200 at No. 3 and narrowly finds space inside the highest tier on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S., where it begins its time in tenth place.

Michael Jackson Charts A New Hit, A Decade And A Half After His Death

Michael Jackson's catalog is filled with songs that have stood the test of time and which countless millions of people know every word to. Tunes like 'I Want You Back,' 'Beat It,' 'Thriller' and 'Man in the Mirror,' among so many others, are still counted among the most successful pop and R&B tunes of all time. One Jackson classic is on the rise again in America. The decades-old cut even manages to reach one Billboard tally for the first time more than a decade after the singer's passing. 'Billie Jean' Debuts as a Streaming Smash 'Billie Jean' launches on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs chart this week. The tune opens at No. 23 on the 25-spot ranking, which looks only at the most successful cuts on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and others, and that Billboard classifies specifically as R&B, hip-hop or rap throughout the United States. Seven Career Hits for Michael Jackson Throughout his lifetime, and in the years following, Jackson has reached the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs ranking with seven different tracks, now including 'Billie Jean.' Only two of those tunes landed on the tally during Jackson's lifetime, according to Billboard, though technically streaming music didn't exist in the '90s when both 'They Don't Care About Us' and 'Why,' a collaboration with 3T, reached the roster. 'Thriller' Remains His Biggest Streaming Win Jackson's four other modern appearances on the tally have all brought him to the top 10. He's climbed highest with 'Thriller,' which peaked at No. 3 and has spent 12 frames on the roster, the most among all Jackson cuts. The late talent has also cracked the top 10 posthumously with 'Love Never Felt So Good' with Justin Timberlake, 'Slave to the Rhythm' and 'Don't Matter to Me,' fronted by Drake, as those cuts climbed to Nos. 5, 6 and 8, respectively. 'Billie Jean' Also Returns to Another Roster As 'Billie Jean' opens on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs roster, the track returns to one other U.S.-based Billboard list, the R&B Streaming Songs chart. Jackson's tune reenters the list at No. 12. The famous composition can also be found on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S., where 'Billie Jean' climbs to Nos. 87 and 98, respectively, after sitting inside the lower half of both 200-spot rosters just days ago. Thriller and 'Billie Jean' 'Billie Jean' was promoted as the second official single from Jackson's blockbuster album Thriller. The tune was pushed in early 1983, only a few months after Thriller arrived in full. 'Billie Jean' followed 'The Girl Is Mine' and preceded career-dominating smashes like 'Beat It,' 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'' and the title track.
