Women's EURO 2025: Unbeaten Spain overcomes Italy; Belgium beats Portugal

The Hindu3 days ago
Tournament favorite Spain came from behind to beat Italy 3-1 and sweep through Group B at the Women's European Championship on Friday.
Italy lost but also advanced to the quarterfinals.
Italy took a 10th-minute lead against the 2023 World Cup champion on defender Elisabetta Oliviero's shot, soon after captain Elena Linari struck the crossbar with a header.
Spain leveled within four minutes, led from the 49th, and added Esther González's tournament-leading fourth goal in stoppage time.
Still, Spain had enough problems in defense handling the Italians, who had 13 attempts on goal, to give host Switzerland some hope for its quarterfinal in one week.
Norway awaits Italy in the first quarterfinal on Wednesday in Geneva, and it will be Spain-Switzerland two days later in Bern.

Janice Cayman scored in stoppage time for Belgium to beat Portugal 2-1 and a first win in its final game at the Women's European Championship on Friday.
Amber Tysiak thought she already scored Belgium's winner in stoppage time but that goal was struck out for an offside call, the second Belgium goal ruled out after a VAR check.
Portugal needed a win to have any hope of making the knockout stage but got off to a bad start when Belgium captain Tessa Wullaert slid in to meet Jill Janssens' cross for the third-minute opener.
More bad news came from Bern where Italy took a shock lead against tournament favorite Spain. Portugal was hoping for a heavy Italian defeat to enable its progress to the quarterfinals on goal difference — as long as it also won.
Telma Encarnação got Portugal's only goal late and couldn't prevent her team's elimination.

Sourav Ganguly's Famous Shirt Swinging At Lord's Inspires Jofra Archer's Match-Winning Spell vs India

Jofra Archer took inspiration from Sourav Ganguly's famous shirt swinging show at the 2002 Natwest Trophy final to produce a decisive spell for England on day five of the third Test against India on Monday, revealed skipper Ben Stokes. Archer removed the dangerous Rishabh Pant with a peach before taking a return catch to dismiss Washington Sundar as India went down by 22 runs despite trying their best to recover from those body blows. "I just said to him this morning, 'you know what today is, don't you?' "You know that highlight package of India knocking off 300-odd back in the day with Ganguly. He thought that was the World Cup final. He thought that was six years today," Stokes said after an energy sapping win. Interestingly, England scripted a famous win at Lord's on the same day they had won the 2019 ODI World Cup final in rather controversial circumstances. However, when Stokes reminded Archer about that momentous day six years ago, Archer thought of the Ganguly moment that happened 17 years ago. "I was like, World Cup that we won? He was like, 'oh that one'. He's an absolute beauty, that boy. I just had the feeling today and that Rishabh Pant wicket was massive in a low run chase," said Stokes Stokes was very mindful of England's WC win in 2019 on this day. "We knew that turning up this morning was genuinely the reason why we went with me and Jof (Archer). It felt right in my tummy that Jof was gonna do something this morning to break the game open. "Gut feel doesn't always work but those two wickets he got this morning obviously swung the game massively in our favour." The England captain has supported Archer wholeheartedly and they also share a special bond. It was evident on the field in the morning session. "So he wanted me to come to mid-on and (Brydon) Carsey to go to leg slip so he could talk to me. But I didn't trust Carsey at leg slip, to be honest," said Stokes. Stokes got the player of the match award for leading from the front. Fresh off an injury comeback, Stokes completed spells of 9.2 overs and 10 overs in his bid to maintain pressure on India. Despite his workload in the game, Stokes said he would be fine for the fourth Test beginning in Manchester on July 23. "Oh, yeah. I'll be absolutely sound for Manchester. It's a big break. Obviously, I was pretty tired after Headingley. But, yeah, after we walked off the field there, sort of a whole new level of tiredness hit. "And it's obviously different when you're ... I've been in games like that before, not as a captain, where I've been given the ball to run in and try to bowl the team to victory. "But then now, adding on the decision making around bowling changes, field placings, how I feel we're gonna get this win. Obviously, there's a physical element of bowling in the fourth innings, but then it shouldn't be underestimated how the emotional and mental tiredness does also get you as well," he said. In a big series like this, there would always be tension Stokes was expectedly asked about the heated exchanges and sledging by players of both teams over the course of the game, and he did not read too much into it. "I think in a big series like this there was always going to be a moment where the two teams were going to clash. I'm all for it as long as it does not cross the line. "If you think about it, it's 22 people out there playing for their country. The highest honour you can have in our sport. So, you can understand that sometimes emotions and tensions can get quite high. "But I don't think anyone in the Indian dressing room or anyone in the English dressing room is going to cry themselves to sleep over what was said or done out there. I don't think it overstepped the line from the India team or from our team. "It wasn't really boiling just happened but it adds to the spectacle of England vs India doesn't it?," he signed off.

Three Things We Learned From India vs England, 3rd Test At Lord's

England beat India by 22 runs in the third Test at Lord's on Monday in the latest last-day thriller between the teams. Victory left England 2-1 up in a five-match series that is fast becoming a modern-day classic. Below AFP Sport looks at three key aspects from a gripping encounter in London: Archer shows England what they have been missing Many observers wondered if Jofra Archer would still be the same bowler who made such a thrilling start to his international career as the express quick prepared to end more than four years of injury-induced exile from Test cricket at Lord's. But a match haul of 5-107 was a reminder of his quality. More than his wickets, the fact the now 30-year-old fast bowler repeatedly topped speeds of 90 mph while maintaining his accuracy was a hugely encouraging sight for England, who would dearly love Archer to be the spearhead of their attack when they look to regain the Ashes in Australia later this year. Given his injury history, how Archer recovers from his efforts at Lord's will be key to his progress and it remains to be seen if he will be fit enough to feature in next week's fourth Test at Old Trafford. But there was no denying the impact he made at Lord's on the sixth anniversary of Archer bowling the Super Over that secured England's 2019 50-over World Cup final win over New Zealand. "Every time he gets announced on the tannoy that he's going to bowl, you just hear the ground erupt and when he turns it on, the feeling in the game just changes," said England captain Ben Stokes. "What an amazing effort from him to get through those overs. He got some crucial wickets for us and it's great to have him back." Milestone madness contributes to India's undoing KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant were threatening to give India a substantial first-innings lead while compiling a superb partnership of 141. But with Rahul 98 not out approaching lunch on the third day, Pant ran himself out in what appeared to be an attempt to get his partner back on strike so he could reach his century before the interval. It was a brilliant piece of work by Stokes to remove Pant with a direct hit that ended the batsman's typically sparkling 74, but it was hard to imagine he would have risked a single had Rahul been further away from a hundred. As it was, experienced opener Rahul duly completed his second century in a Test at Lord's to secure another coveted place on the dressing room honours board. But India ended up only matching, not surpassing, England's first-innings 387 following a needlessly self-inflicted wound. Tempers flare A match marked by mutual accusations of time-wasting eventually saw India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj fined 15 percent of his match fee for his send-off to Ben Duckett after he dismissed the England opener on Sunday. Siraj was sanctioned for celebrating excessively at close proximity to Duckett after breaching a section of the International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct relating to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match". Flashpoints are always a possibility given the sheer length of time involved in a Test-match day and this has generally been a good-natured series. But Nasser Hussain had no qualms about Siraj's behaviour, with the former England captain telling Sky Sports: "He is someone who you love to have in your team. "Because when Indian fans are desperate for their cricketers to show some passion and fight, no one does that better than Mohammed Siraj."

"He Cracked Game Open": Ben Stokes Praises Jofra Archer After Match-Winning Spell vs India

England Test captain Ben Stokes classified tearaway Jofra Archer's blistering spell in the opening hour as the moment that cracked open the game for them and laid the foundation of 22-run victory on the final day of the third Test at Lord's on Monday. On July 14, 2019, England lifted their maiden ODI World Cup title at the 'Home of Cricket'. Fast forward six years, England felt euphoria after five days of hard work, grit and resilience. On the final day, the equation remained simple: England needed six wickets to cross the line while India stood 135 runs shy of chasing the 193-run target and taking a firm grip on the series. With the ball relatively new, Stokes had Archer and Brydon Carse at his disposal. With KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant occupying the crease, Stokes decided to bowl in tandem with Archer to set the tempo of the day. Archer found his mojo and rhythm to draw first blood. With a searing delivery, he flattened Pant's (9) off stump to open the floodgates. Stokes trapped Rahul (39) in front of the stumps, and Archer rattled India again by luring Washington Sundar to cushion the ball back to him for a four-ball duck. The fiery spell left the beleaguered India tottering at 82/7. The England skipper revealed that it was an instinctive feeling to pick Archer ahead of Carse. For Stokes, the 30-year-old's exploits during England's 2019 World Cup triumph certainly influenced his decision. "It was an extraordinary finish. It was actually part of the reason I went with Jof and myself this morning, one of those feelings, what is it, 6 years now to the day (2019 WC win). Jof played a major role in that, just had one of those feelings he would do something special, and he cracked the game open with two wickets. It wasn't an easy call; there was a bit of discussion in the dressing room," Stokes said in the post-match presentation. The dilemma was massive for Stokes, considering Carse had breathed fire in the final session of the fourth day. He nipped the ball sharply back in to remove Karun Nair (14) and India captain Shubman Gill (6). "Brydon (Carse) had an amazing spell last night, he was charging in and had great rhythm, but it was a gut feeling. Jof's first match back in the Test team, and sometimes your gut works. It is awesome to have him back. When he turns it on and the speeds come up on the screen, the feeling in the game changes. What an amazing job to get through the overs, first time out, tough week, but he got some crucial wickets," he added. While England's bowling unit sang in harmony, Stokes was the one who consistently struck the right notes. He bowled 44 overs in the Test and scythed five wickets, including three in the second innings. After bearing the massive brunt of finding the breakthroughs, Stokes is looking forward to staying in his bed for the next four days, before the Manchester Test begins next week. "I thought I had taken myself to some pretty dark places before. But today, bowling to win a Test match for your country.. If that doesn't get you going, then I don't know what does. Bashir, broken hand, going out there and taking responsibility with the bat, then coming out and picking up the last wicket, absolute warrior to do that for the team," he said. "It was always going to be the way: two very good teams going at it. We went toe to toe again. I am not going to lie. I cannot wait to lie in my bed for four days and then be raring to go for Manchester," he added. Despite the odds stacked against India, Ravindra Jadeja (61*) battled with his sheer class and kept the contest alive by stitching up a valuable stand with Jasprit Bumrah. The duo withstood England for 22 overs before Bumrah holed it to Sam Cook. Mohammed Siraj kept India alive with everything he had in his batting arsenal before enduring a heartbreak after getting bowled by Bashir.
