Vinayagar idol shipments reach Puducherry ahead of festive season
A consignment of Ganesha idols from Mumbai reached Puducherry by the Dadar Express on Wednesday. The shipment included three large 7-foot-tall idols in various artistic forms, which will be installed in Lawspet, Krishna Nagar, and Cuddalore areas.
In addition, 26 smaller idols, each measuring about 1.5 feet, were brought in for installation at the homes of members of the Jain community. Local idol-making activity is in full swing as artisans in Puducherry are busy crafting idols in areas such as Murungapakkam Craft Village, Pattanur and Ariyapalayam in Villianur.

In Canacona, artisans work overtime to get Ganesh idols ready
Canacona: With a week away, artisans have been spending extra hours on final touches of their handcrafted idols. The festival will begin on Aug 27. Canacona has at least 40 'chitrashalas' or workshops that begin preparations to mould Ganesha idols at the beginning of June. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Manoj Prabhugaonkar, based at Mashem, said that he learnt the art of sculpting idols from his father and wants to pass on the knowledge to his son. His workshop has over 200 idols in different shapes and sizes drying on shelves. 'The last stage is painting the idols,' said Prabhugaonkar , adding that he hired 8-10 labourers from the neighbouring state to meet the high demand. The workshops in the taluka provide seasonal employment to hundreds of workers who are either from Canacona or from the neighbouring Karwar taluka in Karnataka. Due to scarcity and high cost of labour, some artisans prefer help from other family members. Goa govt reimburses Rs 100 per idol as subsidy to artisans which is not enough, considering the high labour expense, cost of clay, etc.

NTR dist targets clay Ganesha idol record on Aug 26
1 2 Vijayawada: NTR district administration is making grand arrangements to set a world record on Aug 26 by crafting the highest number of clay Ganesha idols in a single day. The initiative aims to spread awareness about eco-friendly Vinayaka Chavithi celebrations. District collector G Lakshmisha said they want to raise public awareness on ways to protect the environment. "We are coming up with this innovative initiative to please Mother Nature. We want people to celebrate the festival in a spiritual atmosphere while protecting the environment," he said. The record attempt will be carried out by thousands of students from schools across the district, with the Indira Gandhi municipal ground in Vijayawada serving as the main venue. Several schools and voluntary organisations are also being involved to ensure maximum participation. "People, NGOs, and other associations should come together for such programmes, which are beneficial for us and also for future generations," Lakshmisha added. The idols made on Aug 26 will later be distributed to the public to encourage households to adopt clay idols instead of harmful alternatives.
