German auto giant Volkswagen is the latest of the big carmakers to drop its EV-specific nomenclature on models. The automaker has confirmed it will be moving away from the 'ID" prefix that has so far defined its electric vehicle range, as it expands with newer products. The upcoming Volkswagen ID. 1 and ID. 2 small electric cars will be the first future offerings to get conventional names.
Volkswagen to drop ID nomenclature on future EVs
The development was recently confirmed by Martin Sander, member of Volkswagen's Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing, and After Sales, in a recent interaction with German publication Auto und Wirtschaft. The board member revealed the upcoming ID. 2all and ID. Every1 concepts will not carry the same names into production. Both concepts preview a new electric entry-level small car and a premium hatchback (supermini in European speak), catered to the masses.

The Volkswagen ID. Every1 concept could use the Polo name when it enters production
The switch to more conventional names should hardly come as surprising, given the strategy has seldom worked for auto players at large in Germany. Carmakers managed to corner themselves with their often confusing naming strategy; be it Mercedes with the EQ nomenclature or BMW with the 'i" series on its EVs. Audi also tried the odd and even names for its electric and ICE cars but that seems to be fading away too. Volkswagen ID. 2 all & ID. Every1 to get real names
So far, Volkswagen has the ID. 3 hatchback, ID. 4, ID. 5, ID. 6 (sold only in China), ID. 7, and the ID. Buzz minivan on sale globally. The VW ID. 3 was the brand's first all-electric offering under the new strategy and arrived in 2017 as a concept. It'll be interesting to see the naming direction Volkswagen chooses with the ID. 2all and ID. Every1 concepts.
Reports suggest that the former could use the Polo name in some form to build on the popularity of the nameplate, while the ID. Every1 small car could revive names like the Lupo, Fox, or Up!, if not an entirely new name. Both concepts will enter production by 2027. Starting 2026, Volkswagen will also begin updating the existing ID models and this would be a good time for the automaker to start renaming its EVs.

Musk calls for impeachment of Trump

Washington: Amid the brewing tensions between US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the tech billionaire called for the impeachment of the Republican firebrand. He went ahead, saying US Vice President JD Vance should replace Trump in the Oval Office, leaving many shocked. Musk's remarks came in response to an X post demanding the impeachment of the 47th President of the United States. 'President vs Elon. Who wins? My money's on Elon." 'Trump should be impeached, and JD Vance should replace him,' Ian Miles Cheong, a Malaysia-based right-wing writer, said in a post on Thursday afternoon. 'Yes,' Musk said in response to Cheong's post about 20 minutes later. The brief friendship between Musk and Trump nose-dived into an abyss due to a disagreement over Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill', which pushes for tax cuts and other spending measures. Things escalated quickly after Musk claimed that Trump is part of the Epstein Files, calling it the reason why it is not being fully released. While speaking to reporters at the Oval Office, Trump narrated the downfall of his and Musk's friendship, with many calling it a therapy session rather than a meeting with a foreign leader. He recalled Musk's farewell press conference and mentioned how the billionaire stood next to the President with a black eye. 'You saw a man who was very happy when he stood behind the Oval desk, and even with the black eye. I said, You want a little makeup? We'll get you a little makeup,' Trump said. 'But he said, 'No, I don't think so,' which is interesting and very nice. He wants to be who he is.' Interestingly, at that time, Musk was facing reports of drug use during his time as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency. Trump also mentioned that he could understand why Musk was upset with some steps he had taken, including withdrawing a nominee to lead the NASA space agency who was supported by the tech tycoon. The POTUS was narrating this saga while sitting in front of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had no other option but to sit silently through it all. At the heart of the Trump-Musk feud is the 'big, beautiful bill' on tax and spending. The centrepiece of his domestic agenda, it aims to continue tax cuts from his first term and is being touted as the make-or-break bill for Republican prospects in the 2026 midterm elections. Musk slammed the bill, calling it a 'disgusting abomination' on Tuesday, because it will increase the US deficit. A day later, the magnate called for Republicans to 'kill the bill,' and for an alternative plan that 'doesn't massively grow the deficit.'

FBI warns of 'dangerous' hacking campaign linked to North Korean attack group

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in collaboration with the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), has issued a joint cybersecurity advisory following a surge in confirmed victims of Play ransomware attacks in May. The FBI reports that these threat actors have impacted over 900 organisations across North and South America, as well as Europe, including businesses and critical infrastructure providers. The updated advisory, released as part of the ongoing Stop Ransomware campaign, includes findings from new investigations this year that reveal an evolution in the cybercriminal group's tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs). The advisory aims to inform organisations on how to defend against these attacks. Who are the hackers, why this is dangerous and more details According to FBI (via Forbes) advisory, Play a closed ransomware group, operating independently to "guarantee the secrecy of deals" regarding exfiltrated data. Play ransomware is believed to be linked to Andariel, a North Korean state-sponsored attack group associated with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's "Reconnaissance General Bureau." Researchers suggest Play is an "integral part" of Andariel's cyberattack arsenal, distributed by threat groups such as Balloonfly. The hackers leave ransom notes with victims that do not include an initial demand or payment instructions. Instead, victims are directed to contact the attackers via email, often using unique German email domains. The FBI noted that some victims are contacted by telephone and threatened with data release to compel ransom payment. Balloonfly has been implicated in multiple incidents involving Play ransomware deployment, primarily against businesses in the US and Europe, often using a malware backdoor to infect Windows systems. Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center and Microsoft Security Response Center previously observed Play ransomware being deployed after attackers exploited a zero-day vulnerability in the Windows Common Log File System. This flaw was mitigated in April. The FBI emphasizes that the Play ransomware campaign shows no signs of abating and urges organisations to enhance their defenses immediately.
