Texans safety Jimmie Ward arrested on felony assault family violence charge: Reports

Houston Texans safety Jimmie Ward was arrested Thursday morning on a felony assault family violence charge in Montgomery County, Texas, according to reporting by Catherine Dominguez and Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle.
Ward, 33, was accused of strangulation at his home in Magnolia, where he was arrested around 5:30 a.m., per information from the Montgomery County Jail, via the Chronicle.

Ward is being held without bond, according to the Chronicle.
"We are aware of the report involving Jimmie Ward," Omar Majzoub, the senior director of communications for the Texans, said in a statement.
"We are gathering more information and have no further comment at this time."
Ward signed with the Texans during the 2023 offseason and was voted a team captain in both 2023 and 2024.
The former San Francisco 49er is under contract with Houston through 2025. His deal was expiring in 2024, but the Texans added another year to it last summer. Ward is owed $4.5 million.
He has yet to participate in offseason workouts this year. He's still recovering from the sprained foot he suffered in December last season, an injury that required season-ending surgery.

Although he hasn't been seen this week at Texans mandatory minicamp, according to the Chronicle, he has been in the building this offseason for treatment.
Ward played in 10 regular-season games last season, piling up 461 defensive snaps along the way, according to Pro Football Focus. Just like the previous season, he recorded only a 5.5% missed tackle rate, per PFF, this time ranking 10th in that category among all NFL safeties with at least 300 regular-season defensive snaps in 2024. He finished ninth on the team with 48 total tackles, with 32 being solos and 5 being TFLs.
In 2023, Ward played a part in the Texans going from worst to first in the AFC South. He also played under Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans in San Francisco, where Ryans previously served as defensive coordinator.

He played in only 10 games during the 2023 season, too, but his impact was felt as he tallied 50 total tackles, picked off a pass while defending three others and forced a fumble. The 2014 first-round pick out of Northern Illinois flexed his positional versatility, marking his first of two straight seasons in Houston with more than 100 defensive snaps in the box, in the slot and at deep safety, per PFF.
The Texans notably added former Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson this offseason. Second-year safety Calen Bullock is expected to play a big role for Houston this season as well.

The Indianapolis Colts gave quarterback Daniel Jones a one-year, $14 million deal to compete for the starting job, and head coach Shane Steichen loves what he has been seeing from the 28-year-old signal-caller. "Very pleased with what we got right now. He's been doing a helluva job," Steichen said on Thursday about Jones, according to CBS4 Indy. "Really smart football player. Learned the offense very quickly, making really good decisions out there through OTAs. Obviously, we want to carry that over to training camp, but he's done a really good job. After a 2023 season that saw him suffer a neck injury and later a season-ending knee injury, Jones totaled 2,070 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 79.4 passer rating across 10 starts for the New York Giants in 2024, while completing 63.3% of his passes. Jones, who rushed for 265 yards and two touchdowns, ranked 33rd among quarterbacks with a 72.0 overall grade, according to Pro Football Focus. New York released Jones after 10 games, which saw them go 2-8, with him later signing with the Minnesota Vikings but never appearing in a game before signing up with Indianapolis this offseason. Jones feels like he's getting in a groove this spring with the Colts. The quarterback said that he's been "building up reps, the preparation we do in the meeting rooms, the installs, being detailed and specific about our reads. Where we need to be looking at where the receivers are going to be, how we're seeing certain looks. So, I've really enjoyed that part of the learning process and feel like that's helped on the field. Jones appears to have the upper hand in the Colts' quarterback competition, as Anthony Richardson — whom the team selected with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft — recently suffered an aggravation to the AC joint in his throwing shoulder. Richardson was limited to four starts in his 2023 rookie campaign due to head and shoulder injuries and was benched during 2024. While he has rushed for 635 yards and 10 touchdowns, Richardson has posted a combined 67.8 passer rating and completed 50.6% of his passes in 15 career starts. Texans GM Nick Caserio downplays C.J. Stroud's shoulder injury, stating team was 'careful' Everyone has a thought on Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud's shoulder issue that kept him out through the first six days of voluntary OTA workouts, including general manager Nick Caserio. The difference between the GM and the folks on ESPN is that one is looking for offseason content. The other knows it's nothing more than a bunch of mumbo jumbo. "Honestly, it was much ado about nothing," Caserio said in a Thursday morning appearance on SportsRadio 610's Payne & Pendergast. "In the spring, we're just trying to make good, smart manage the player as we see fit. In the end, the focus is on getting him ready for training camp. He had a good attitude when he was in the building. He obviously trained and worked on his body and his overall strength development which that's what the offseason program is usually for." Stroud, who enters a crucial Year 3 as the face of the franchise, threw the final two days of Texans' minicamp at a limited capacity. Speaking after Tuesday's workout, the Pro Bowl quarterback said he spent the offseason aiming to lose body fat, gain muscle and get faster and stronger. "I was already throwing before you guys got to see me out there, pretty normally, I think y'all don't have much to talk about so everything is blown up," Stroud said after practice. The Texans were simply being cautious with Stroud's role this offseason after being sacked 52 times during the 2024 season. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans and new offensive coordinator downplayed the injury, stating he'd be good to go for the start of the regular season. "It's important for me to just make sure we're protecting him," Ryans said. "To make sure we know what's best for C.J. and not really worry about the outside opinions. Nobody knows the information about our players more than me." Caserio offered a similar sentiment surrounding the status of his franchise signal-caller, stating that while he might be limited in reps, that doesn't mean he's slacking on work around the building in other areas. "Going back to February through March even before the offseason program we had a number of players who were here. Early on, in February or March, it might be a combination of in the building, out of the building but you know they are getting in work. C.J., when he does leave Houston, he goes off to California where he has some resources and some people he utilizes out there at UCLA where he can actually get his work in," Caserio said. The Texans open the regular season on the road at SoFi Stadium against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 7.
