Tirupati Board Seeks Land For Sri Venkateswara Temple In Assam
Mr Sarma has assured full support for the project and confirmed to TTD chairperson BR Naidu that the state government would allocate the requested land to facilitate the construction.
He expressed his appreciation for the initiative taken by the Andhra Pradesh government and the TTD Trust Board, led by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. He added that the upcoming Srivari temple would be a "magnificent spiritual center" and would promote Hindu dharma, culture and traditions across the region.
Highlighting Assam's rich religious heritage, the Chief Minister spoke about the spiritual significance of the Kamakhya Devi temple and hoped that the Srivari temple would become a beacon of devotion and unity for devotees in the north east.
The TTD will likely finalise design, planning and associated stationing of temple management in collaboration with Assam authorities. This temple is expected to follow the architectural, ritual and administrative norms used in earlier TTD expansions, ensuring consistency while accommodating local culture.
The proposed temple, to be constructed under the aegis of TTD, is expected to strengthen religious and cultural ties while offering a new spiritual destination for devotees in the region.
The meeting today aligns with TTD's larger strategy, as decided in recent board meetings, to significantly expand its temple footprint across India and internationally.
In December 2024, the TTD Board approved the formation of an expert committee to oversee global expansion. In March 2025, the TTD formally wrote to chief ministers, requesting at least 10 acres of prime land in various state capitals for new Srivari temple projects. The letter emphasised both spiritual outreach and the role of temple tourism in regional development.
The Board has reportedly set aside Rs 5,258 crore to pursue temple construction in India and overseas, with a dedicated trust to oversee international temple projects. In July 2025, the TTD formed a sub-committee to evaluate feasibility and launch temple construction in various countries, based on earlier expert recommendations.

Confusion over actual financial burden on Bengal exchequer for Durga Puja grants
Confusion is brewing within the West Bengal State Secretariat over the exact financial burden on the state exchequer following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's recent announcement to enhance the annual grant for community Durga Puja committees this year. The confusion stems from the exact number of community Durga Puja committees that would be entitled to the eligible state-sponsored grants, with contradictory figures surfacing. While the 'Forum for Durgotsav', an umbrella body of the different community Durga Puja committees in West Bengal, has pegged the number at 43,000, the Chief Minister, in her announcement earlier this week, stated that a total of 45,000 community Durga Puja committees would receive the grant this year. The Chief Minister quoted this figure while she announced that the annual dole amount to each Puja committee this year would be increased to Rs 1.10 lakh from Rs 85,000 last year. If the figure of beneficiary Puja Committees this year is 45,000, as quoted by the Chief Minister herself, the total direct pay-out from the state exchequer will be Rs 495 crore, a 35 per cent rise over the previous year's figure of Rs 365.5 crore. Even if the figure for the number of beneficiary Puja Committees this year is 43,000, as per the records of 'Forum for Durgotsav', the total direct pay-out from the state exchequer will be Rs 473 crore, a 29 per cent rise over the previous year's Rs 365.5 crore. Insiders from the state finance department pointed out that while the figures mentioned above would be just the direct payout from the state exchequer, the actual expenditure would be much more, considering the massive 80 per cent electricity concessions provided to beneficiary Puja committees in addition to the annual dole. Opposition parties have already lashed out at the state government over this enhanced Puja dole hike. The leader of opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Thursday, appealed to the community Durga Puja Committees in West Bengal not to accept the annual dole from the government. He urged them to do so in memory of the young woman doctor who was raped and murdered last August on the premises of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, and in solidarity with lakhs of unemployed youth in the state, whose aspirations, he alleged, have been crushed by flawed government policies. Adhikari also announced full support to those community Durga Puja committees that choose to refuse the state government's dole offer this year.

PM Modi inaugurates, lays foundation stone of projects worth Rs 2,200 cr in Varanasi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for a wide range of development projects worth approximately Rs 2,200 crore in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi. In a significant push towards development in his parliamentary constituency, PM Modi also released the 20th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. Under this instalment, Rs 21,000 crore will be directly transferred to the bank accounts of over 9.7 crore farmers across the country. He also distributed more than 7,400 assistive aids to 'divyangjan' and elderly beneficiaries. Starting his address with 'Om Namah Parvati Pataye Har Har Mahadev', PM Modi said, "Today, I have come to Kashi for the first time since 'Operation Sindoor'. On April 22, when the Pahalgam terror attack happened, 26 innocent people were killed brutally. The grief of those children and women deeply pained me." "At that time, I was praying to Baba Vishwanath that he give strength to the people to go through this pain and grief. I promised my daughters that I would take revenge for their 'Sindoor', and today, I fulfilled it all due to the blessings of Mahadev. I dedicate the success of 'Operation Sindoor' at the feet of Mahadev," he added. Addressing the massive gathering, the Prime Minister said, "Watching the divine scenes of Shiva devotees carrying Ganga water across Kashi during the auspicious month of Sawan is truly special... I also wanted to offer my prayers at Baba Vishwanath and Markandeya Mahadev during Sawan; however, people would have faced problems if I had gone there, and that is why I bow down to Bholenath and Maa Ganga from here only." As part of the efforts to strengthen connectivity, the Prime Minister inaugurated the widening and strengthening of key roads, including the Varanasi–Bhadohi road and the Chhitauni–Shool Tankeshwar road. He also inaugurated a railway overbridge at Hardattpur, which is expected to alleviate congestion on the heavily-used Mohan Sarai–Adalpura route. In addition, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for several new infrastructure projects, including road upgrades in Dalmandi, Lahartara–Kotwa, Gangapur, and Babatpur. Focussing on improving the city's power infrastructure, the Prime Minister also launched electricity projects worth over Rs 880 crore. These include the Smart Distribution Project and the undergrounding of overhead electrical cables, which aim to modernise and secure the city's power supply system. To promote tourism and protect the city's rich cultural heritage, PM Modi inaugurated the redevelopment of eight riverfront Kuccha Ghats, the beautification of the pond and ghat at Rangildas Kutiya in Shivpur, and the restoration of the historic Durgakund. Foundation stones were also laid for the restoration of Kardameshwar Mahadev Temple, development of Karkhiyaon, the birthplace of notable freedom fighters, and redevelopment of Munshi Premchand's ancestral home in Lamahi into a museum.
