Parents of baby boy remanded over abuse
MELAKA: The parents of a two-month-old boy suspected of being abused in Sungai Petai, Alor Gajah, have been remanded for seven days to assist in investigations.
The remand order was issued by Ayer Keroh Sessions Court Judge Haderiah Siri against the couple, both aged 22, today.
The remand, which runs until May 13, is to facilitate investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
The unemployed couple was arrested by a police team at about 6.30 pm yesterday in front of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of Melaka Hospital.
Their arrest followed a report lodged by a medical specialist at the hospital, who found both recent and older injuries to the victim's head during an examination.
Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the injuries were believed to be the result of abuse.
The baby had initially been taken to Alor Gajah Hospital after the mother claimed he was suffering from seizures, before being referred to Melaka Hospital.

KUCHING (June 10): The Magistrates' Court here today ordered a 17-year-old girl to be placed on a one-year good behaviour bond for stealing a tablet belonging to an optical shop along Jalan Rubber Barat. Based on the facts of the case, the complainant—an employee of the shop—discovered that the shop's tablet, which had been placed on the counter, was missing. After an unsuccessful search, the complainant reviewed the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and observed the girl taking the tablet and placing it in her sling bag before leaving the premises. A police report was subsequently lodged, and investigations led to the arrest of the girl on Feb 10. Further investigation revealed that during a search of the girl's residence, she personally pointed out the tablet, which was found on the kitchen table. Senior citizen claims trial for physical assault on teen
MELAKA: A senior citizen suffering from a bout of ailments claimed trial at the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh here to a charge of committing physical sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl. The 70-year-old accused entered the plea after the charge was read out before Judge Haderiah Siri on Monday (June 9). According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly committed physical sexual assault on the teenager some two years ago. The offence was said to have been committed at a house in Taman Tay Boon Seng, Klebang, here at about 2pm in early February 2023. The charge was framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. If convicted, the accused can face a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping. Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Nazrin Ali Rahim proposed a bail of RM20,000 along with several additional conditions. Lawyer Kent Tan Chow Teng, representing the accused, appealed for a lower bail, citing that his client suffers from heart disease and diabetes and has no fixed income. The court set the bail at RM10,000 with conditions that the accused must not disturb the victim, report to the nearest police station every month and surrender his passport to the court. The next mention for the case has been fixed for July 16.

Mother, uncle held over 4-year-old's fatal fall from Bukit Jalil apartment
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained the mother and uncle of a four-year-old boy who died after reportedly falling from the 30th floor of an apartment in Bukit Jalil here on Wednesday. Cheras police chief ACP Aidil Bolhassan said the Indonesian nationals, aged 25 and 27 respectively, have been remanded until today to assist in investigations under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001. The boy's father is Malaysian, he said. "Based on the post-mortem, the child died due to multiple injuries sustained after the fall. The cause that led to the incident is still under investigation," he said in a statement.
