Coles century puts Sussex just on top at Durham
A resilient unbeaten 117 from Sussex's James Coles defied an excellent bowling performance from Durham's Bas de Leede on day one of their County Championship Division One match at Chester-le-Street.Ben Raine struck early to give Durham a dream start, but they were pegged back by half-centurion Daniel Hughes (60), however, he was dismissed after lunch to hand Durham the early initiative.Coles remained calm and composed to steady the ship in the afternoon and he along with captain John Simpson (40) put pressure on the Durham bowlers. However, the hosts bounced back after tea thanks to de Leede (4-83), who bowled well on his first Championship appearance of the season.Coles remained at the crease, frustrating the hosts, and he reached his hundred just before close, with Sussex finishing on 322-9.
The visitors got off to a bad start at an overcast Banks Homes Riverside as Raine removed the in-form Tom Haines for four as he chopped on to his off-stump.The Durham opening bowlers limited Sussex's run-making opportunities and that pressure nearly told as Raine dropped a catch from his own bowling when Hughes mistimed an aerial drive on 15.At the other end, Tom Clark took a while to get going, but he played a glorious cover drive for four in Sam Conners' first over of the season. Hughes continued to take opportunities to score as he slammed a George Drissell ball down the ground for four.Drissell struck back for Durham shortly before lunch when he bowled Clark for 30, with one that found the Sussex man's off-stump.Hughes then reached his half-century from 101 deliveries, but the Australian was bowled for 60 by de Leede, who produced a beauty to dislodge his off-stump.
Coles started nicely to thwart Durham's bowling attack, but the hosts struck back with Conners picking up his first Championship wicket of the season as Ibrahim was caught behind for five.Durham continued to pile on the pressure and they very nearly had their fifth wicket when wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson dropped a regulation catch down the leg side after Coles nicked a Raine delivery when he was on 35.Coles continued to tick along, taking scoring opportunities whenever they presented themselves, with him playing a lovely shot through the covers from the bowling of England man Matthew Potts. The Sussex man then passed fifty for the third time this season, but Simpson was dropped on 17 by Drissell at slip off the bowling of Potts.Coles then pulled a de Leede bouncer to the boundary, while Simpson flicked the first ball after tea to the leg-side boundary. The impressive Conners struck back with Simpson edging behind to Robinson for a well-made 40.Coles continued to motor though, as he caressed a ball from Conners through the covers for four, and whipped one through the leg side soon after. But wickets kept on falling at the other end as de Leede got Fynn Hudson-Prentice for five after he chipped one up to Emilio Gay at cover, and the Dutchman struck again as Jack Carson was caught behind for two.Sussex's Ollie Robinson came to the crease and hit two boundaries, but he was lbw for nine when Raine caught him plumb in front of his stumps. That brought Jofra Archer to the crease, playing his first red-ball game since 2021, and he hit Potts for four through to the deep third boundary.Coles, on 95, nearly fell short of his ton when a leading edge from Raine found its way to de Leede at backward point, but he was dropped for the second time. He then made Durham pay for their sloppy fielding when he reached his fifth first-class century from 169 balls.Archer looked in good touch with the bat as he slammed a Raine delivery through the covers for four and then hit de Leede for six, but he was dismissed for 31 from the next ball as he pulled one to Conners on the boundary. But Coles remained unbeaten on 117 at the close, taking his side to 322-9.

AC Milan 'aim to complete Rasmus Hojlund this week' after he axed from Man United's squad - but £35m permanent exit hinges on key detail
AC Milan are reportedly preparing a renewed approach for out of favour Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund, with the Serie A side claimed to be hopeful of achieving a deal this week. Ruben Amorim left the Dane out of the Man United squad for their Premier League opener against Arsenal on Sunday, with Hojlund left watching the 1-0 defeat from the stands. His absence was the clearest sign yet that Hojlund's future lies away from Man United, with the Red Devils having recently unveiled their new £73.7million striker Benjamin Sesko. Daily Mail Sport revealed earlier this month that AC Milan had proposed an initial season-long loan worth £4million for Hojlund. The deal included a £39million option to buy if Hojlund impresses back in Italy, where United signed him from in a £72million move from Atalanta back in 2023. Man United are prepared to sell Hojlund for as little as £30m, with reports in Italy claiming AC Milan are now set to make a renewed approach. Make your 7 picks by 12.30pm every Saturday to win £1,000* Man City Fri Aug 2211:30 V Tottenham The Serie A giants, who finished a lowly eighth last season, are now expected to offer a loan deal with an obligation to buy Hojlund. Gazzetta Dello Sport report that the offer would include an obligation for £35million - however it would only be triggered if certain goals are achieved this season. AC Milan reportedly believe the conditions would suit all parties, presenting Man United with the chance to receive a desired free while giving Hojlund the chance to rebuild his career. The report claims Hojlund is in favour of a permanent exit from Man United - if he is to leave - to allow him to focus fully on his new club. AC Milan are expected to hold further talks with Man United on Monday, with the club hoping to add to Massimiliano Allegri's attacking options ahead of the weekend and fend off any late interest from Napoli following Romelu Lukaku's injury. Hojlund had previously indicated his desire to fight for his place at Man United, but their lack of European football and the arrival of Sesko is expected to limit his minutes. 'I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot whatever happens,' Hojlund said after scoring in the 4-1 win over Bournemouth in Chicago during the US pre-season tour. 'Competition is fine with me, it sharpens me,' he added. 'I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp so I'm welcoming everything that comes. I think it's good with competition and it only sharpens the team. 'I'm still very young. I think people forget that sometimes, I'm only 22. Obviously, not every striker is scoring 100 goals at the age of 22. But I've learned a lot, I think you can see in my game.' Hojlund has scored 26 goals in 95 appearances for United since signing from Atalanta in the summer of 2023. He had scored 10 in 34 matches for the Italian club, which convinced the Red Devils to pay a £72million fee. Hojlund has also been of interest to Fulham, while his former club Atalanta and Napoli have been credited with considering a move.

‘King of the North' joins battle to save stricken Salford Red Devils
SALFORD'S despised owners have a new obstacle to overcome – the 'King of the North.' For Andy Burnham is ready to help get Sire Kailahi and Curtiz Brown out of the Red Devils. 2 The Mayor of Greater Manchester met Rugby Football League chiefs to get an up-to-date appraisal of what is going on. After hearing what was said, he has demanded a meeting with the pair, whose reign under the Jacobsen Management Group guise has seen shame heaped on the 152-year-old club – which may yet go bust on September 3. And the message is likely to be similar to the one delivered by hundreds of protesting fans on Sunday – go. While he has no formal powers to remove them, it is hoped the pressure of having him against them may bring a decision sooner rather than later. Burnham and Paul Dennett, Mayor of Salford, said: 'We have requested a meeting this Friday with Jacobsen Management Group to discuss our serious concerns over the future of the club. 'The impending HMRC court hearing, the failure to meet tax obligations, the delay in payment of wages and the lack of financial investment have resulted in a complete loss of confidence in the ownership among fans and the wider Salford and rugby community. 'Salford Red Devils face an uncertain future.' Brown met representatives of The 1873 group of furious fans that organised Sunday's protest on Monday night – but it is thought that resulted in more questions than answers. Again, bridging finance is said to have been promised by the end of August, before the September 3 date a winding up petition brought by HMRC is scheduled to be heard. If it arrives, the debt of at least £626,000 will be paid off and the indications are a new head will be brought in to run the cub. 2 However, external confidence of that happening is waning, with administration – meaning certain relegation to the Championship - looking like the best possible option. And it is believed discussions have already been held about setting up a phoenix club if liquidation – an increasingly likely prospect – occurs. Salford will, at least, play Leigh on Friday after forfeiting Sunday's cash with Wakefield because of a lack of players. And Rugby League Commercial managing director Rhodri Jones said about whether they will see out the season: 'It's a week-to-week thing but I'm confident they and everyone else will work to get them through the next five games.'
