Thailand says wants fair trading relationship with U.S
BANGKOK (Reuters) -Thailand is committed to creating a fair relationship in trade and investment with the United States, the finance minister said on Tuesday as the Southeast Asian nation seeks talks with Washington to head off threatened tariffs.
Thailand faces a 36% U.S. tariff if a reduction can't be negotiated before a moratorium expires in July. The U.S. has set a 10% tariff for most nations while the moratorium is in place.
More collaboration was expected in the energy sector, Pichai Chunhavajira told a Thai-U.S. investment forum, with Thailand keen for partners in green energy and interested in working with U.S. biotech, food processing, and wellness companies.
Thailand has submitted a proposal to Washington that aims to address the trade imbalance, including by enhancing market access for U.S. exports, tackling transshipment violations, and Thai investment that would create U.S. jobs, he said.
"On enforcing anti-circumvention, these policies are being translated to action now," Pichai said, referring to goods from other countries being shipped as if they originated from Thailand.
He estimated the measures could cut the U.S. deficit by up to $15 billion, but he did not say by when this would happen.
"I am positive that we have a strong set of practical and viable proposals that can effectively lead to win-win results," he said.
The United States was Thailand's largest export market last year, accounting for 18.3% of total shipments worth $55 billion. Washington has put its trade deficit with Thailand at $45.6 billion.

Israel says it retrieved the body of a Thai hostage taken to Gaza when the war began
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel said Saturday it had retrieved the body of a Thai hostage abducted into Gaza during the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that sparked the war, as it continued its military offensive, killing at least 95 people in the past 24 hours, according to Gaza's health ministry. The prime minister's office said Nattapong Pinta's body was returned to Israel in a special military operation. Pinta was seized from Kibbutz Nir Oz and killed early in the war, the government said. Thailand's foreign ministry in a statement confirmed that the last Thai hostage in Gaza was confirmed dead. It said the bodies of two others are yet to be retrieved. The news came two days after the bodies of two Israeli-American hostages were retrieved. Fifty-five hostages remain in Gaza, and Israel says more than half are dead. Israel's defense minister said Pinta's body was retrieved from the Rafah area in southern Gaza. He had come to Israel to work in agriculture. The army said he was seized by the Mujahideen Brigades, the small armed group that it said also abducted and killed Shiri Bibas and her two small children . The same group took the two Israeli-American hostages, Judih Weinstein and Gad Haggai, whose bodies were retrieved Thursday. Thais were the largest group of foreigners held captive by Hamas militants. Many of the agricultural workers lived in compounds on the outskirts of southern Israeli kibbutzim and towns, and Hamas militants overran those places first. A total of 46 Thais have been killed during the conflict, according to Thailand's foreign ministry. Israel wants the GHF to replace humanitarian groups in Gaza that distribute aid in coordination with the United Nations. Israel accuses Hamas of siphoning off aid under the U.N.-led system. The U.N. and aid groups deny there is significant diversion of aid to militants and say the new system — which they have rejected — allows Israel to use food as a weapon, violates humanitarian principles and won't be effective. It was unclear if the GHF sites opened on Saturday. Separately, Palestinians lined up at a soup kitchen in Gaza City for handouts on the second day of Eid al-Adha . 'I have been standing here for more than an hour and a half. I feel I have a sunstroke, and I am in need,' said the waiting Farida al-Sayed, who said she had six people to feed. 'I only had lentils, and I ran out of them.' Death tolls since the war began Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the October 2023 attack and abducted 251 hostages. Most were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. Israeli forces have rescued eight living hostages and recovered dozens of bodies. Israel's military campaign has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza's health ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. India, U.S. trade talks extend into next week, Reuters reports
Trade talks between Indian and U.S. officials have been extended into next week as both sides seek consensus on tariff cuts in the farming and auto sectors, Manoj Kumar of Reuters reports, citing Indian government sources. Body of Thai hostage recovered from Gaza, Israel says
Israel has retrieved the body of a Thai national taken hostage during the Hamas-led attack in October 2023, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz says. He said the body of Nattapong Pinta was retrieved during a special operation in the Rafah area of southern Gaza on Friday. The 35-year-old was working as an agricultural labourer in southern Israel when he was kidnapped. Mr Nattapong is likely to have been killed during his first months of captivity, an Israeli military official said. Before the operation, it was not known whether he was dead or alive. It comes after the Israeli army recovered the bodies of two Israeli Americans in Gaza earlier this week. Mr Nattapong was the married father of a young son, the military official said. He had been working at Kibbutz Nir Oz to support his family in Thailand when he was captured by a militant group called the Mujahideen Brigades. The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that the mission to recover his body was launched following information from the interrogation of a "captured terrorist". After reports of his recovery on Saturday, the BBC tried to reach out to Mr Nattapong's wife. She did not answer the call but texted back with a picture of her son crying. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum campaign group said the recovery comes after "20 terrible and agonising months of devastating uncertainty". The group urged the Israeli government to reach an agreement with Hamas to free the remaining captives. Mr Nattapong is believed to be the last remaining Thai national abducted during the 7 October 2023 attack. Five Thai hostages were released during a ceasefire earlier this year - all of them alive. The Israeli army retrieved the bodies of an elderly couple, Judy and Gadi Haggai, in the Gazan city of Khan Younis on Thursday. The couple were killed at the same kibbutz and their bodies were also held by the Mujahideen Brigades, according to the IDF. Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led cross-border attack almost 20 months ago, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. Some 54 of those captured during the attack remain in captivity, including 31 the Israeli military says are dead. At least 54,677 people have been killed in Gaza during the war, according to the territory's health ministry.
