Technical issues and aircraft's last safe landing
Ahmedabad: In a chilling twist of fate, passengers on Air India flight AI172 from London to Ahmedabad unknowingly experienced what would be among the aircraft's final hours of service.
Heena Kalariya, who arrived on the same plane described a flight plagued with technical issues. "My phone started buzzing with calls about the crash. It's surreal to think we were on that very aircraft just hours earlier," she recalled. Kalariya said the flight had malfunctioning air conditioning system, and none of the internal display screens worked. When concerned travellers sought explanations, cabin crew dismissed these issues as technical glitches, she said.
Most disturbing, Kalariya said, were the unusual rattling sounds in the aircraft during landing. What felt like inconveniences took on a haunting significance in light of subsequent events. Just two hours after Kalariya's safe landing, tragedy struck.

Rain & polls near, Ambazari hyacinth removal gets push
1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has resumed a massive drive to remove water hyacinth which has swamped nearly one-thirds of the Ambazar lake as part of its flood-prevention measure and have deployed poclain machines and other equipment. With the civic elections scheduled to be held later this year, flooding could become a major poll issue, especially when memories of the September 23, 2023, floods are still fresh. In case there is a repeat of 9/23 disaster and city areas get inundated, it will hand down a potential ammunition to those aspiring to contest the impending NMC polls to go ballistic against the civic administration and the BJP-ruled state govt. The citizens affected by the 9/23 flood are already unhappy with the slow pace of works like construction of retaining wall along the Nag River. While the officials say the renewed efforts to remove the hyacinth are part of its pre-monsoon preparedness, there could be a political push too to get the drive completed before peak monsoon, said sources. Officials say the thick growth of hyacinth at the overflow point hindered the smooth discharge of water into downstream drains and the Nag River, leading to backflow and urban flooding, especially during the last monsoon. While the NMC has been periodically removing the weed, experts say the root cause needs long-term scientific intervention. The civic body also sought assistance from the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri) to study and control the hyacinth problem. According to officials, water hyacinth — commonly mistaken for water lilies — covered nearly one-third of Ambazari Lake just a few days ago. However, with intensified efforts, tonnes of the invasive aquatic plant are now being extracted daily. The floating mats of hyacinth became a major concern, especially after recent rains, when they were seen drifting into the Nag River and clogging the flow of stormwater. Riding free: Women reclaim Fort Kochi streets at night
Kochi: As rain swept through the narrow lanes of Fort Kochi on Saturday night, 30 women cycled through the drizzle, their spirits undampened by the drizzle. The Freedom Night Ride, organized by SheCycling, was more than just a ride — it was a statement of visibility and freedom in public spaces, especially after dark. The participants, aged between 15 and 70, gathered at the iconic St Francis Church before pedalling through the city's historic bylanes and colonial charm. For many, it was not just a ride, but a personal journey toward confidence and independence. Among them was 58-year-old Tanuja Aziz, who recently learned to cycle. Drenched but beaming, she shared how cycling transformed her life. "I never imagined going alone to the market or shops. Now I do it regularly," she said. "Learning with this group gave me freedom as a housewife." Her friend, Lyla Nizar, echoed the sentiment. "We were strangers united by fear — of falling, of failing, of being judged. That fear turned into laughter and friendship," she said, proudly posing beside her cycle. The movement is led by Zeenath Muhammed Ali, a cycling coach and the driving force behind SheCycling in Ernakulam. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo A product of the Kochi Corporation's bicycle training programme in 2022, Zeenath has since trained hundreds of women from across India — including Maharashtra and Kashmir. "Cycling is one of the most affordable and empowering modes of transport," she said. "For homemakers and low-income women, it means independence. All you need is a cycle and some air in the tyres." While Fort Kochi is seen as progressive, Zeenath noted that traditional gender roles still persist. "We're challenging that — reclaiming public space and agency." The ride ended on a festive note with a darbuka performance by Jijo Soman and the Indus Cycling Embassy, Trivandrum, adding rhythm to the rain-soaked night. Sump wells in Golf Links to control waterlogging
New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council has finalised the construction of three sump wells in Golf Links with a combined capacity of 30,000 litres as part of its monsoon preparedness plan. This low-lying area experienced severe waterlogging last year. A larger sump well with a 5-lakh-litre capacity near Purana Qila is also under construction and scheduled for completion by June 30. Another similar facility at Bharti Nagar is also expected to be ready by the same deadline. "These facilities are among the initiatives taken to ensure no waterlogging occurs in low-lying areas. Preparations are underway to avoid waterlogging in areas surrounding Purana Qila. At Bharti Nagar, a sump well with a 40,000-litre capacity is under construction," said NDMC vice-chairman Kuljeet Chahal. NDMC has reported the completion of all desilting operations. "Our area comprises of an extensive network of stormwater drains, manholes, bell mouths and gully traps designed to manage rainwater runoff and prevent urban flooding. With growing urbanisation and changing climatic patterns, maintaining these drainage lines has become critical," said Chahal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Over 40 and Struggling With Belly Fat? On desilting the covered portion of Sunehri Nullah, NDMC said lieutenant governor, in an earlier meeting, stressed taking up its desilting as the topmost priority. "It was further decided that MCD will send communication to Delhi Metro and NDMC. Delhi Metro will implement the desilting work, prepare estimates for project and submit them to NDMC. Based on communication, the council has sanctioned a budget amounting to Rs 70.4 crore for the desilting/cleaning of Sunehri Nullah on Lodhi Road. " Municipal Corporation of Delhi has completed 85% desilting and will take time beyond the June 15 deadline to conclude the remaining work. According to an MCD official, while the targeted silt has been collected from drains, approximately 10,000 tonne still need to be transported to landfills. "We will consider the work to be completed only when all silt reach the designated site. Work is on at all sites in full swing," said the official.
