PGA Tour Veteran Ed Fiori Dies at 72

The Sun07-07-2025
FOUR-TIME PGA Tour winner Ed Fiori, who famously denied a 20-year-old Tiger Woods a first pro title with a victory at the 1996 Quad Cities Classic, died Sunday at the age of 72, the PGA Tour said in a tribute on its website.
Fiori, who had battled cancer, won his first PGA Tour title at the 1979 Southern Open. He added wins at the 1981 Western Open and the 1982 Bob Hope Desert Classic before his most memorable victory at the Quad Cities Open -- now known as the John Deere Classic -- in Illinois.
Woods, 20 and playing in his third tournament as a professional, had a one-shot lead over 43-year-old Fiori going into the final round.
Fiori, who had nine missed cuts in his first 10 events that season, later recalled that playing with the young star, who already drew intense scrutiny and massive galleries, 'kind of raised my intensity a little bit.'
'It brought my game up with it,' he said.
After an opening bogey, Fiori made five birdies in a four-under round and claimed the title as Woods faltered with a two-over par round that included a quadruple bogey, a double bogey and two more bogeys and dropped him into a tie for fifth.
Woods would go on to cement his status as a superstar, piling up 15 major titles to date in a career currently in limbo as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Fiori would go on to play on the senior tour until back trouble -- including spinal fusion surgery in 2005 -- forced him to retire.
'Ed Fiori was a true gentleman in our sport and is a player who would often be referred to as a pro's pro,' PGA Tour Champions President Miller Brady said. 'In three of his four wins on the PGA Tour he dueled down the stretch with future World Golf Hall of Fame members, most notably Tiger Woods in 1996.
'That grit and resolution in the face if immeasurable odds is incredibly admirable in every aspect of life, and I know he battled cancer with that same determination until the end'- AFP

Katie Ledecky leads USA swimming team at world championships ahead of LA 2028

NINE-time Olympic gold medallist Katie Ledecky is spearheading the United States swimming team at the world championships in Singapore, with sights firmly set on the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Ledecky, heading to her seventh world championships, recently broke her own 800m freestyle world record in May, her first long-course world mark since 2018. The 28-year-old also posted the second-fastest 1,500m freestyle time this season and her second-best 400m freestyle performance, proving she remains a dominant force in the pool. If she sweeps her three individual events and contributes to a 4x200m freestyle relay win, she will move within one gold of Michael Phelps's all-time record of 26 world titles. Ledecky, however, remains focused on personal improvement rather than records. 'I just kind of swim a little more free and try to improve in different areas, rather than always comparing myself to my 19-year-old self,' she said. The US team blends experience with emerging talent. Gretchen Walsh, who twice broke the 100m butterfly world record this year, and Regan Smith, the 100m backstroke world record-holder, lead a strong women's squad. The men's team, led by Bobby Finke and rising stars like Luke Hobson and Jack Alexy, aims to rebound after a subdued Paris Olympics. Ledecky expressed confidence in the team's unity. 'We want to set the tone as a whole team this summer and build from there,' she said. - AFP

Messi, Alba risk ban after MLS All-Star game withdrawal

LOS ANGELES: Lionel Messi and Inter Miami team-mate Jordi Alba could face a suspension after withdrawing from Major League Soccer's All-Star game. Argentina superstar Messi and Alba had been due to start for a combined MLS team which will face a squad representing Mexico's Liga-MX in Austin later Wednesday. However a league source said Inter Miami had notified officials on Wednesday that both Messi and Alba had been pulled from the event. Under MLS rules, both Messi and Alba could be given a one-game suspension unless they have a valid reason for the withdrawal, such as an injury. A league source told AFP however no decision on possible disciplinary action would be taken until MLS officials had spoken to Inter Miami to confirm the circumstances of the withdrawal. The duo's participation in Wednesday's mid-season exhibition game had been under a cloud after Miami coach Javier Mascherano indicated at the weekend he wanted Messi and Alba to rest. "The players are called up. I'd prefer they rest, but it's not my decision," Mascherano said. "I know how important the All-Star Game is, and as far as I know, there's no decision from the club - everything continues as normal." Both Messi, 38, and Alba, 36, have a history of recent injury problems while Inter Miami has faced a gruelling schedule which included participation in the recent FIFA Club World Cup. - AFP

Spain's Bonmati celebrates historic Euro final spot against England

SPAIN star Aitana Bonmati said her team planned to take some time to celebrate reaching their first ever European Championship final following Wednesday's extra-time win over Germany, before quickly turning their thoughts to another title decider against England. 'We have made history again, beating Germany for the first time and reaching a Euro final which we had never done before,' a smiling Bonmati remarked after her extra-time strike secured a 1-0 victory in Zurich in the semi-final clash. 'We feel proud to be part of this generation of players that is achieving so much, but this is not over yet,' added the reigning Ballon d'Or winner before the Spain squad headed back to their training base in Lausanne, on the shores of Lake Geneva. 'They are already tearing things up in the dressing room and there won't be much silence on the bus journey back to Lausanne. 'We will enjoy this but tomorrow we need to start thinking about England.' The game on Sunday in Basel against the reigning European champions will be a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final, when Olga Carmona scored the only goal to hand Spain the title. England will have had an extra 24 hours to prepare for the match after beating Italy in their semi-final on Tuesday, although they needed extra time to win that match having been taken all the way to penalties against Sweden in the quarter-finals. 'I know they played twice 120 minutes but we knew today could be a long match and it was,' Bonmati said, in English. She knows that England's substitutes -- notably Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang -- have had a major impact in each of their knockout ties en route to the final, but insists Spain can trust in their own squad. 'We believe in our players, the 11 starters, but we also have a lot of players on the bench who can do better in the second half or in extra time. We have a big squad and we trust all of them,' she said. 'England have a lot of players that we have faced a lot of times -- we know them and they know us so we have to prepare the best way we can to win.' - AFP
