'Karate Kid: Legends' trailer: Ralph Macchio teams with Jackie Chan
Ralph Macchio's karate sensei and Jackie Chan's kung fu shifu work together to train a martial arts prodigy in "Karate Kid: Legends."
Ben Wang, star of 'Karate Kid: Legends,' was turned on to the original 'Karate Kid' as a youngster because it was his aunt's favorite movie.
Wang's on-screen rival, Aramis Knight (both 25), had never experienced it until he was cast in the new film. And 'Legends' director Jonathan Entwistle – born in 1984, the year the first "Kid" came out – got into the mythology thanks only to the Netflix spinoff series 'Cobra Kai.'
Then there's Ralph Macchio, the OG karate kid. He has been a part of the franchise before there was a franchise, before "wax on, wax off" became a touchstone. It's no secret to Macchio why folks still follow the journey of his Daniel LaRusso – and why he thinks people will love Wang's teen character, Li Fong.
'He's dealing with an internal struggle a little bit different than what my struggle was back in the day, but at the end of it, you're rooting for people you care about. That's the storytelling,' Macchio says. 'And we're hoping that this fresh new take for the 2025 families is going to be what it needs to be: entertainment for everyone.'

'Legends' (in theaters May 30) expands the Miyagi-verse – named for Daniel-san's beloved sensei Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita) – by bringing in kung fu shifu Mr. Han, Jackie Chan's wise old master from 2010's 'Karate Kid' reboot. But there are echoes of the original 'Karate Kid': After moving from Beijing to Brooklyn, Li runs afoul of karate-champ bully Conor (Knight). And when Li enters a martial arts competition to win prize money for his struggling friend Victor (Joshua Jackson), Han reaches out to LaRusso for karate help because of his own friendship with Miyagi.
Unlike young Daniel, Li is way past the basics. 'This is grad school,' says Wang, the first Asian-American lead of a "Karate Kid" film.
Jackie Chan's 'Karate Kid' love goes back to the '80s
Wang recalls meeting Chan and the hubbub about the 71-year-old Hong Kong action icon starting before he got to the set. Filming in Montreal, Wang watched a crew full of laid-back French Canadians freak out hearing that Chan was driving himself from the airport. 'Thirty minutes later, Jackie pulls up in a van and he's like, 'What's up?' ' Wang says with a laugh. 'And then we shot a fight scene together.'
Chan was aware of the 1984 film and enjoyed it, and it was 'part of the reason why I did my first 'Karate Kid' movie,' he says. 'It gives people a chance to know karate and the culture.' He had wanted to work with Macchio ever since meeting him at the premiere of the 2010 'Karate Kid,' and for him, the best part about 'Legends' is 'we get to train Ben and torture him together!'
Filming those sequences, Macchio and Chan 'were always trying to one up each other,' Entwistle adds. 'It's baked into this idea of kung fu versus karate, which one is better?' And it's a 'quite meta' way to nod to the audience division between the 2010 movie and the beloved original.
Knight believes the 1984 film still holds up: 'It's a feel-good movie that anybody can relate to, whether you're 13 or 30 or 100 years old.' And there are moments in "Legends" with Macchio in the old Miyagi house where 'he looks on-screen to me like he could be 17,' Entwistle says.
Original 'Karate Kid' Ralph Macchio embraces his most Mr. Miyagi self
Macchio has a good sense of humor when it comes to his apparent eternal life. 'Don't let the youthfulness fake you out,' quips the actor, still looking great at 63. That vigor helped when he wrapped the 'Cobra Kai' series finale, got on a plane and immediately went to work on 'Legends.' 'You buy the goldfish, you keep it in the bag until it gets used to the climate. I was just, they cut the bag, threw me in.'
"Cobra Kai" ended with LaRusso and former rival Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) finally at peace, and 'there's really a grounded sort of almost Miyagi-esque element' about Daniel now, Macchio says. 'He's less the uptight car salesman who's pissed off that Johnny's getting up in his kitchen."
The teachings of Miyagi continue to flow through the franchise. For Chan, there's Mr. Han's continued passion for training his student but also the core of 'Karate Kid,' where 'we protect, not attack, and we take care of each other,' he says. And Li becomes a martial arts master of sorts for ex-boxer/pizza-place owner Victor, showing him that 'everything is kung fu' as he trains for a comeback fight. 'He's still doing the boxing that he's always done. But it's almost like he believes in himself,' Entwistle says.
Macchio sees it in the "heartfelt way" Daniel and Han connect, "that sharing a piece of the wisdom and the legacy of Miyagi is never the wrong choice when it's for the greater good," he says.
And Macchio takes all that to heart in his real life as well, be it with young co-stars like Wang or his own children: 'Sharing those stories and a piece of that going forward, be it from the actor side or the sensei side, is something I take a great deal of pride in.'

Netflix: First look at 'Stranger Things' Season 5, 'Happy Gilmore 2,' 'Frankenstein,' 'Squid Game' Season 3 and more

From new seasons of our favourite shows to new movie releases, Netflix unveiled sneak peaks of highly anticipated projects at its Tudum live event on Saturday. Hosted by Sofia Carson, the event featured Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, and the final seasons of Stranger Things and Squid Game. Additionally, we got information on the premiere date for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, with Daniel Craig returning as Benoit Blanc. And Netflix also provided more information on One Piece Season 2. It does feel sad to be close to saying goodbye to Stranger Things, ahead of its fifth and final season, after the show had such a significant impact pop culture. The series was created by Matt and Ross Duffer, working alongside executive producer and director, Canadian Shawn Levy. Season 5 promises to dive deeper into the Upside Down, leaning into its mythology and lore, with the story beginning in the Fall of 1987. "Our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna," the official synopsis reads. "But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown." "Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will's disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread." The final season of Stranger Things will be released in three parts, with four episodes being premiering on Nov. 26, then three episodes on Christmas day, with the finale landing on Netflix Dec. 31. After almost 30 years, the Happy Gilmore story continues with the sequel on July 25. In addition to Adam Sandler, the cast includes Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, and Christopher McDonald and brand-new co-star Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (aka Bad Bunny), Blake Clark and Sandler's daughters Sadie and Sunny. Guillermo del Toro's upcoming movie Frankenstein is easily one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, and a particular passion project for the Oscar-winning director. Mary Shelley's classic story, Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina, Inside Llewyn Davis), Jacob Elordi (Saltburn, Priscilla), and Mia Goth (X, Emma) make up the impressive core cast for this adaptation. The film will be released in November. We've almost reached the final round of Squid Game, with the show coming to an end when Season 3 is released on June 27. Beginning right after the devastating Season 2 finale, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is at his "lowest point yet" and is forced to make high stakes decisions, while experiencing an overwhelming feeling of despair in even deadlier games. Meanwhile, In-ho resumes is position as Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), who welcomes "mysterious VIPs" as his brother, Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun), continues his search for the island. Netflix has released the first six minutes of Wednesday Season 2, starring Jenna Ortega. The season will be released in two parts, first on Aug. 6 and then on Sept. 3. It's Wednesday Addams' second year at Nevermore Academy, and Tim Burton is bringing the Addams family to the school. When Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) arrives he wants to fit in, but it's hard to control his electrokinesis, making him an outcast. Wednesday's complicated relationship with her mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) will be elevated, while we also get to see Morticia's mother, Hester Frump, who Wednesday calls Grandmama. Lady Gaga is also joining the Wednesday cast as a guest star. She plays Rosaline Rotwood, a legendary Nevermore teacher. "Nothing is what it seems in Season 2," creator Miles Millar told Tudum. "Wednesday goes into this season thinking she knows Nevermore. It's the first time she's returned to a school willingly." "But as soon as she gets back, nothing happens that she's expecting. She thinks she's going to be in control, that she knows where all the bodies are buried, and she doesn't." Promising to be Benoit Blanc's (Daniel Craig) most dangerous case yet, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is the third film in the franchise from writer-director Rian Johnson, being released on Dec. 12. Knives Out newcomer Josh O'Connor is part of the cast, in addition to Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Cailee Spaeny and Daryl McCormac. The film gets its name fort he U2 song, off of the band's album "Pop." The live-action series One Piece returns for Season 2, starring Iñaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero and Taz Skylar, which will premiere on Netflix in 2026. At the Tudum live event, Netflix released its first look at the character Tony Tony Chopper, a smart and cute blue-nosed reindeer-boy hybrid. Chopper has the ability to treat various illnesses. "What excited me about playing Chopper is the tug of war between his standoffishness and his huge heart," Mikaela Hoover, voice of Chopper, told Tudum. "He tries so hard to hide his emotions and put on a tough exterior, but underneath, he's a big softy, and his love can't help but come out." "I believe there is a little Chopper in all of us. We all want to be loved and accepted. We go to great lengths to keep the people that we love safe. There's a purity to his nature that reminds us of what's good in the world." Chopper was introduced in the manga's 134th chapter.

'Talk to Me' directors tackle grief and gore with 'Bring Her Back'

'Talk to Me' directors tackle grief and gore with 'Bring Her Back' Show Caption Hide Caption 'Bring Her Back' trailer: Sally Hawkins is a secretive foster mom A foster mother (Sally Hawkins) takes in two siblings after the death of their father but also harbors a dark secret in horror movie "Bring Her Back." Spoiler alert! We're discussing important plot points and the ending of "Bring Her Back" (in theaters now), so beware if you haven't seen it yet. Making a visceral, gory, emotional roller coaster of a horror film is a good way to navigate some personal tragedy. Three years after scaring the summer box office with the hit 'Talk to Me,' Australian filmmakers (and twin brothers) Danny and Michael Philippou return with another, very different possession film. 'Bring Her Back' was already on tap to tackle grief, love and cycles of abuse when a family friend of the Philippous died before filming started. Their "sadness" affected the movie, though they turned into a positive, Danny Philippou says. 'It is so therapeutic. It did feel like saying goodbye.' Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox 'Bring Her Back' stars Sally Hawkins as Laura, a social worker and foster mom who takes in Andy (Billy Barratt) and his visually impaired younger sister Piper (Sora Wong) after their father dies. But Andy discovers something stranger than the weird white painted circle around the house: Laura is using her foster son Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips) as a conduit for a supernatural being to resurrect her recently drowned daughter Cathy. (Her exhumed corpse is lying in a shed out back. We'll get to why in a bit.) The Philippous dig into how they pulled off the gnarliest scenes, why the ending changed and how 'Bring Her Back' connects to 'Talk to Me': Jonah Wren Phillips gets the most squirm-inducing moments in 'Bring Her Back' 'Talk to Me' showcased the brothers' gift for gore, and 'Bring Her Back' takes it to a whole other hide-your-eyes level as the possessed Oliver begins to act out in terrifying fashion. First, he grabs a butcher's knife and tries to eat it, leaving his mouth a bloody, scraggly toothed disaster. In that sequence, a rubber knife was used with a fake head, though 'it's the sound design that really sells it, which was me actually chewing on a knife,' Danny Philippou explains. And then the hungry child begins to chow down on the countertop, taking out huge pieces with what's left of his teeth. The filmmakers let Phillips go to town on super-soft custom-made balsa wood laced with chocolate. He's 'the toughest kid ever,' Philippou says. "Every day he came to a set with a smile on his face.' Sally Hawkins' occult-leaning mom has a ritualistic reveal Laura has somehow obtained mysterious VHS tapes with grainy footage of people creepily coming back to life, and subtitles explain to the secret to her plan. The possessed person consumes the soul of a deceased person (Oliver eating Cathy), and a third body (Piper) can become the host for the dead by repeating the manner of death and having the possessed regurgitate the soul into it. Laura also has a healthier way to grieve – watching home movies of Cathy – and Danny Philippou says these found tapes are 'an inversion" of that. (He and his brother built out a lore and backstory by reaching out to real occultists.) Like the teens using an embalmed hand to conjure dark spirits in 'Talk to Me,' 'Laura's completely out of her depth,' Philippou adds. 'She's struggling with what she's doing, and doesn't even 100% know how to execute it.' The death of a friend changed the 'Bring Her Back' ending In the film's climax, Andy tries to show another social worker that Laura's out of her mind, but Laura murders them both, desperate to complete the ritual. She attempts to drown Piper in the backyard pool but when the frightened young girl yells "Mom," Laura can't do it and stops the ritual. Piper escapes and when she's confronted by Oliver, she kicks him in his bloated belly, and she runs off as Oliver pukes brown muck that's assumably Cathy's soul. Piper is picked up by some good samaritans, the cops find Laura embracing her daughter's corpse, and Oliver escapes the white circle surrounding the property, freeing him from possession. 'The sad part is he's going to be scarred for life,' Danny Philippou says. Michael Philippou reveals that they considered 'a few different endings,' including one where Cathy actually did end up in Piper's body. But a bigger, scarier planned finale was scrapped when their friend died and it switched to a more emotional one. (The end of the movie includes a dedication to Harley Wallace.) 'Death is really unfair and it's really sudden. People don't get a resolution,' Danny Philippou says. 'Harley died at 22, 23. His story wasn't finished." The film's ending "goes against the conventions a little bit but it feels more true to life.' Is 'Bring Her Back' a sequel to 'Talk to Me'? No, but they're connected! 'Talk to Me' puts social-media spin on the possession film Sophie Wilde stars as a youngster haunted by dark visions after she allows a spirit to possess her body in the Australian horror movie "Talk to Me." USA TODAY The Philippous want to do a third horror movie and are currently 60% done with a documentary about death match wrestling. They're also writing a sequel to 'Talk to Me,' and Danny Philippou says he's found a 'small way' to tie their breakthrough hit with "Bring Her Back" where they exist in the same world. (He hints that something is coming soon that will tease that connection.) 'It all happens on this one street,' Michael quips. 'Don't buy a house in that neighborhood!' Danny warns, laughing. The demons that possess people in 'Talk to Me' are predatory spirits and lost souls. But in 'Bring Her Back,' Laura says it's an angel that's in Oliver, and the Philippous tend to agree. 'Oliver is not good or bad,' Michael says. 'He's committing this miracle. He's bringing back a lost loved one.' Also, 'he's not there with evil intentions,' Danny adds. 'He's like a genie in a bottle. You rub the lamp, he's going to come out.'
