Asian FX tepid on trade uncertainty
BENGALURU: Asian currencies were subdued on Thursday with investors tracking developments in US trade negotiations, while South Korean stocks led gains among regional equities on optimism around President Lee Jae-myung's pro-growth policies.
In South Korea, shares rose 1.5% to their highest since July 2024, after gaining 2.7% on Wednesday. The won advanced 0.3% to hit an eight-month high.
South Korea's new President Lee held his first cabinet meeting on Thursday, focusing on an emergency package to tackle stagnating economic growth and provide household relief.
MSCI's gauge of Asian emerging market equities advanced 1.3%. Shares in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand gained between 0.6% and 0.8%.
Regional currencies were largely tepid against a feeble dollar as weak economic data renewed concerns over sluggish US growth and persistent inflation.
The Malaysian ringgit, Taiwan dollar and Thai baht all inched up 0.1%.
With the early July deadline for the pause on US President Donald Trump's 'reciprocal tariffs' drawing near, market attention is on the progress in US trade negotiations.
Maybank analysts expect trade developments to remain a key driver of currencies as the US persists on its tariff agenda.
Trump described China's Xi Jinping as 'tough' and 'extremely hard to make a deal with' in a social media post, dampening hopes for a swift end to trade tensions and leaving investors on edge.
'While the prospect of no bilateral deals by early July and the resumption of reciprocal tariffs could yet be negative for Asia FX, a stable CNY alongside implicit FX commitments could see some currencies, especially in North Asia, remain resilient,' analysts at BofA said.
China's yuan was last trading flat.
The Philippine peso rose 0.2%, while stocks were flat. Data showed the country's annual inflation eased for a fourth straight month in May, while the central bank signalled it would allow for a more accommodative monetary policy.

Asian currencies poised for weekly gains
BENGALURU: Asian currencies were steady on Friday and poised for weekly gains after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping signalled further trade talks, while most regional equities tracked Wall Street's overnight losses. In India, equities reversed course to rise 0.9% after the Reserve Bank of India delivered a larger-than-expected cut to its key repo rate and lowered the cash reserve ratio to bolster economic growth. 'The RBI may have decided to move quickly to a more appropriate policy rate level. A shift towards neutral stance means more rate cuts may be unlikely in the near-term,' Jeff Ng, Head of Asia Macro Strategy at SMBC, said. The rupee inched up 0.1% to 85.74 per dollar. Other regional currencies moved within a narrow band. The Thai baht and Singapore dollar were largely flat but were on track for weekly gains of 0.5% and 0.4%, respectively. The Malaysian ringgit was up nearly 0.6% for the week. MSCI's index of emerging market currencies was flat after touching an all-time high on Thursday. The index is up 0.5% for the week. The dollar index was little changed, after hitting a six-week low on Thursday, and was headed for a weekly loss of 0.5%. Trump's erratic tariff moves and a worsening US fiscal outlook have triggered a flight from the dollar, prompting analysts to expect most emerging market currencies will retain or build on their gains over the next six months. In their closely watched hour-long phone call on Thursday, Xi pressed Trump to ease trade tensions that have rattled the global economy and warned against provocative moves on Taiwan, according to a summary released by the Chinese government.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures settled higher on Friday, reversing midday losses to loga fourth consecutive weekly gain, despite concerns over rising production and inventories. The contract rose 1.01% this week. Crude palm oil futures had traded lower as concerns over rising output and stock levels in the country continued to weigh on sentiment, said David Ng, a proprietary trader at Kuala Lumpur-based trading firm Iceberg X Sdn Bhd. 'We see support at 3,800 ringgit and resistance at 4,000 ringgit.' Dalian's most-active soyoil contract rose 0.91%, while its palm oil contract gained 0.05%. Soyoil priceson the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) were up 1.11%. Palm oil rebounds on anticipation of strong demand Palm oil tracks the price movements of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices slipped but were on track for their first weekly gain in three weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping resumed trade talks, raising hopes for growth and stronger demand in the world's two largest economies. Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, strengthened 0.02% against the dollar, making the commodity slightly more expensive for buyers holding foreign currencies.
