Ex-Tory councillor's wife Lucy Connolly jailed for tweeting ‘set fire to all migrant hotels' faces wait over appeal
A TORY councillor's wife jailed for urging rioters to set fire to migrant hotels faces a wait to see if her appeal is successful.
Lucy Connolly yesterday told judges she had never intended to incite any violence.
The mum of three, 41, was jailed for 31 months in October after admitting inciting racial hatred.
Connolly, a former childminder, hit out on X as troubled flared hours after three girls were knifed to death in Southport last July.
She wrote: 'Mass deportation now, set fire to all the f***ing hotels full of the b***ds for all I care . . . if that makes me racist, so be it.'
Connolly, of Northampton, giving evidence from HMP Drake Hall, said when she wrote the post she was 'really angry, really upset' and 'distressed those children had died'.
She deleted it after calming down, and said: 'I know that wasn't an acceptable thing to say.
"When I wrote that there had been no violence and it was never my intention to cause any.'
The court reserved judgment until a later date.
Husband Raymond, who lost his West Northamptonshire district seat earlier this month but is still a town councillor, said outside court: 'I'm hoping this will come to a positive conclusion.'

Calls to reform compensation over miscarriages of justice
Sam Hallam, Victor Nealon, Brian Buckle, Oliver Campbell and Ahmed Adan have collectively spent more than 50 years in jail for crimes they did not commit — yet none has received a single penny in compensation. That is the result of a change in the law introduced in 2014 under the Cameron premiership, which means victims of miscarriages of justice whose convictions are overturned must prove their innocence beyond all reasonable doubt to receive compensation. Campaigners argue that as a result of the 'brutal' test, which sets an 'impossible standard' for most, 93 per cent of applicants who have been wrongly convicted and imprisoned are denied compensation. Appeal, the charity law firm that represented Andrew Malkinson, who served 17 years in prison for a rape he did not commit, and the law reform group Justice are calling on the lord chancellor, Shabana Mahmood, to scrap the test to ensure victims of miscarriages of justice are fairly compensated for the harm done to them.

Riot police deployed in Northern Ireland as violence continues
Riot police were deployed in Ballymena in Northern Ireland for a third night following public disorder that erupted after an alleged sexual assault on a girl in the area. Masked individuals set fire to Larne Leisure Centre in County Antrim, which had been designated as an emergency rest centre, prompting the relocation of families. Police in Ballymena faced attacks from masked protesters throwing fireworks, glass bottles, and metal, leading to the use of riot police, dog units, water cannon, and plastic baton rounds. Six individuals have been arrested for public order offences, and one person has been charged. Political leaders, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Stormont ministers, have condemned the violence and appealed for calm, emphasising the need to allow the justice process to proceed.
