Panchkula: The traffic cops deployed at a checkpoint here to prevent drink driving, who did not recognise DCP Srishti Gupta in a private vehicle and civil clothes and asked her to blow into the alco-sensor, were later honoured by the officer.
They were given appreciation letters and a cash reward. The felicitation ceremony was organised at the DCP office in Sector 1 on Tuesday.
It may be recalled that recently newly appointed DCP Gupta conducted a surprise inspection of the checkpoints at various places in Panchkula Sunday. During the inspection, the vigilance of the police was assessed, and the special campaign being run against drink and drive was also reviewed.
The DCP Tuesday also honoured SPOs Dharamveer and Surjeet Singh, who played a key role in stopping the smuggling of illegal liquor in a Bolero vehicle, with a letter of appreciation and a cash prize. Both the jawans showed promptness and alertness while on duty at the check post and succeeded in catching the illegal liquor.
The DCP also had words of praise for home guards Praveen Kumar, Kishan Singh, and Mohit Kumar, who, she said, "did excellent work at the drink and drive check posts".
The three jawans played a key role in making the campaign successful by promptly issuing challans.

40-year-old trader shot dead in Noida Sector 12

Noida: A 40-year-old trader was shot dead in Sector 12, Noida, on Wednesday afternoon, police said, adding that multiple teams are working to apprehend the suspects and a case of murder has been registered at the Sector 24 police station. Police identified the deceased as Ompal Bhati, originally from Sikandarabad who resided in Sector 94 and was engaged in foreign exchange trading with an office in Sector 18. 'On Wednesday, around 1.30pm, Bhati visited the rented flat in W Block of Sector 12 to meet a man. During the meeting, he was shot in the chest and killed. As the landlord and locals heard the gunshot, the suspects managed to flee the scene,' said station house officer (Sector 24) Vidhyut Goel, adding that the motive of killing is yet to be known. During the investigation, it came to light that two men, one of whom identified himself as Pawan (single name) — had approached the owner of the two-storey house in Sector 12 on Tuesday inquiring about an accommodation available on rent. After visiting the property, they left. But they returned on Wednesday morning. 'They finalised the deal to rent the flat and paid ₹1,000 as token money. When the landlord asked for an Aadhaar card and other identification, they assured him they would submit the documents by evening and took the keys for cleaning the flat,' the SHO added. In the afternoon, while cleaning the flat the two suspects called Bhati to discuss something important. During the conversation, one of the suspects allegedly shot him and fled, said an officer, speaking on condition of anonymity. While fleeing, their Delhi-registered motorcycle didn't start and thus they left it behind. 'They simply walked away after locals began converging,' the officer added. Locals alleged that Bhati carried a bag full of cash and it was taken away by the suspects. Deputy commissioner of police Yamuna Prasad, however, nullified it, saying: 'During the investigation, Bhati's wife confirmed that he did not leave home with any cash. His family, which is also into the foreign exchange business, said he would never visit anyone's flat without gaining their trust.' 'It was also revealed by the family that the two had even previously visited Bhati's residence. They were known to each other,' the DCP added. A case of murder has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Sector 24 police station. Efforts are underway to arrest the suspects, said officers.

FIR into brutal killing of stray dog in Sec 20, Pkl

Panchkula: A gut-wrenching murder of a stray dog shook the elite residential area of Sector 20 Panchkula on Sunday morning. Sheru, a community dog from the vegetable mandi, was found dead with grave injures and all four limbs tied in the early morning by resident Preeti Pahwa, who used to feed Sheru. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Preeti said, "Sheru was a very friendly, healthy and vaccinated dog. I found him with his feet tied with tight ropes, blood oozing from his mouth along with a blue-coloured liquid and called the police on the spot. The criminals tied his limbs so that he can't run to save his life, how low can human beings fall?" According to Preeti, this is the fourth dog in the same area that has been murdered similarly in the last one month. "We suspect all these dogs are being poisoned and if these criminals are not found, they will kill all other stray dogs too," she added. On Tuesday, Siddharth Arora, advocate in Punjab & Haryana high court, filed a legal representation with the deputy commissioner of police, Panchkula, seeking registration of an FIR in the case after the SHO Sector 20 Panchkula police station on Monday refused an FIR. Subsequently, on Wednesday, the police registered an FIR in the matter, Arora said. "We had submitted a written representation to the DCP u/s Section 173BNSS u/s 325 BNS & S 11(1)(L) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals act (1960) on behalf of the complainants, Preeti Pahwa and other residents, and this comes in the aftermath of blatant refusal of ASI Kuldip Singh and SHO Somvir Dhaka of Sector 20 Police Station to register FIR," he added. Preeti and other feeders, Mudita, Ruma and Savita had put up a fight for an autopsy of Sheru's body at Pet Animal Centre, a govt veterinary hospital in Sector 3, Panchkula. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "There was no vet at the hospital, being a Sunday. But after a lot of pressure, we managed to get the autopsy done on Sheru from the hospital," says Preeti. A postmortem report confirmed that the dog was poisoned before being brutally tied up and discarded in nearby bushes. She said, "If justice has to be served to these voiceless animals, stern action must be taken against those committing such a heartless crime, especially when the Indian law had made cruelty towards animals a cognizable offence." Saud Somvir Dhaka, SHO, Sector 20, said, "We are investigating the death of this dog and Kuldip Singh will lead the investigation."

School teacher booked for taking leave over ‘false miscarriage'

Bijnor: A case was registered against a govt primary school teacher and six others, including the former and the current Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) in Amroha district, after she was accused of availing leave by falsely claiming a miscarriage. Teacher Varsha Gupta, 41, currently posted at a primary school in Papsara village of Joya block, allegedly took 42 days of leave from July 4 to Aug 14, 2016 claiming treatment after a miscarriage. In 2018, local lawyer Manu Sharma filed a complaint alleging Gupta took paid leave without submitting the required medical documents. However, no action was taken. In 2022, he filed an RTI request with the then Block Education Officer of Joya. The response revealed that Gupta's leave was approved and her salary paid in full despite the absence of a medical certificate. Sharma accused departmental officials of negligence, alleging they failed to act on his earlier complaint. In 2024, he approached the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) court, which recently directed the Kotwali police to file an FIR against those involved. SHO Pankaj Tomar said, "The FIR was registered on Tuesday against Gupta, two BSAs, the block education officer, a clerk, and others under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and 409 (criminal breach of trust)."
