OPEN// Nigeria: UNDP trains teachers, pupils on green energy technologies
ABUJA, May 1 (MENA) - The United Nations Development Program's Global Environment Facility Small Grants Program (UNDP GEF SGP) said it has trained no fewer than 200 teachers and 1,000 pupils across Nigeria on green energy technologies.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ibironke Olubamise, coordinator of UNDP GEF SGP said Nigerian teachers and pupils were trained on green energy technologies and applications using the Green Energy STEM Portal.
The Green Energy STEM Portal is an artificial intelligence-based learning management tool for training STEM educators and pupils, she added.
'Couple of projects supported by the UNDP GEF Small Grants Program have adopted some digital tools for project implementation to enhance climate and environmental education; and built the capacity of students to address climate change in schools,' Olubamise said.
'Projects have adopted the use of Canva for creating infographics, social media posts, and presentations on environmental related climate topics for ease of understanding by the students and teachers,' she added.
According to her, students and teachers use videos/YouTube videos during trainings and eco club meetings on how to install simple solar system and others on simple waste recycling techniques.
'They have also used the WhatsApp platform to form a group of all the eco club mentors (matrons/patrons) where they share climate and environmental information,' Olubamise said.
She added that the UNDP GEF Small Grants Program is always very mindful of the youth, women, and the physically challenged when reviewing proposals for possible funding support.
'Thus, any project that specifically targets any or a combination of this group of people will always get more attention and be considered for possible support,' she noted.
'The program usually requests to know the population (disaggregated) of beneficiaries to be sure the marginalized and vulnerable are not overlooked in project design, support, and implementation,' she pointed out. (MENA)

CAIRO, May 28 (MENA) - President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Wednesday called on young people and families to focus within the coming period on education that aligns with digitized labor market. The President made the remarks during his meeting with Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat and Director of the Egyptian Military Academy Lieutenant General Ashraf Salem Zaher. Presidential Spokesman Mohamed El Shennawy said President El Sisi followed up on the latest pertinent to the 'Digilians" initiative with a focus on the executive procedures for joining. The initiative is to come into force by September 2025. The selection process will be conducted objectively. He also noted that the study will include multiple programs, including an intensive diploma, a specialized diploma, a professional master's degree, and an academic master's degree, all of which will be offered completely free of charge, including accommodation, living expenses, and training. The curriculum will include a comprehensive set of technical, personal, linguistic, life and leadership skills, in addition to freelancing skills. President Sisi also reviewed the initiative's tracks, including the development of students' technical skills. Agreements are being concluded with international and local companies operating in Egypt to receive trainees in the initiative after completing the duration of theoretical study to acquire technical skills. Furthermore, all trainees will be assisted in creating an account on freelancing platforms and securing practical projects. President Sisi stressed the need to complete all the executive procedures related to implementing the initiative on time, while considering ways to expand the base of beneficiaries of the initiative to achieve a significant leap in the number and quality of trained personnel in the field of communications and information technology. President Sisi also gave directives to cooperate with specialized entities in various technological sciences, both locally and internationally, to develop the linguistic, life, and leadership skills of Egyptian youth, in light of the state's strategy to build digital capabilities and technology-specialized cadres. He also called for studying ways to expand the base of beneficiaries of the initiative in order to achieve a qualitative leap in training cadres in the fields of communications and information technology. President Sisi made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting with Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr Amr Talaat, and Director of the Egyptian Military Academy Lieutenant General Ashraf Salem Zahir. The president directed to cooperate with specialized institutions in various technological sciences both locally and internationally in light of the state's strategy to build digital capabilities and specialized technology cadres. He also stressed the importance of proceeding with the implementation of digital transformation plans and development of the country's technological infrastructure. During the meeting, the president reviewed the latest developments concerning Digilians initiative, especially with regard the executive procedures for enrollment in the initiative, due to start in September 2025, Presidential Spokesman Mohamed Shennawy said. Within this context, Minister Talaat said the initiative is open for all youth of both genders, from various academic and professional specializations, and from all Egyptian governorates. The selection process will be based on objective criteria. OPEN// PM meets Oxford university delegation for talks on coop. in advanced cancer treatment
CAIRO, May 22 (MENA) - Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli met with a delegation from the University of Oxford at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to discuss collaboration on advanced cancer treatment and medical research. Attendees included Egypt's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour, Cairo University President Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadek and Oxford's Pro-Vice Chancellor for Innovation Chas Bountra. The discussions centered on a new and advanced cancer treatment method developed by Oxford along with ways to transfer this technology to Egypt, particularly through partnerships with Cairo University and Hospital 500/500. Representatives from Caring Cross and GermFree, US-based organizations specializing in gene and cell therapies and cleanroom infrastructure, outlined plans for cooperation with Egypt to make cutting-edge cancer treatments more affordable and accessible. Brazil and India are already engaged in similar collaborations, they pointed out. The proposed project includes establishing Egypt's first applied research center for advanced medical products, training medical staff, and creating a national platform for gene and cell therapy development—positioning Egypt as a regional leader in this field. Madbouli expressed full support for the project and directed the preparation of an implementation plan. He also proposed adopting it as a national initiative, similar to Egypt's successful Hepatitis C treatment campaign, to expand access and reduce costs for cancer patients nationwide.
