OPEN// President Sisi urges expanding base of beneficiaries of "Digilians" initiative
CAIRO, May 28 (MENA) - President Abdel Fattah El Sisi Wednesday stressed the need to continue with efforts to complete all executive procedures related to implementing the "Digilians" (digital pioneers) initiative within the set time-frame.
He also called for studying ways to expand the base of beneficiaries of the initiative in order to achieve a qualitative leap in training cadres in the fields of communications and information technology.
President Sisi made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting with Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr Amr Talaat, and Director of the Egyptian Military Academy Lieutenant General Ashraf Salem Zahir.
The president directed to cooperate with specialized institutions in various technological sciences both locally and internationally in light of the state's strategy to build digital capabilities and specialized technology cadres.
He also stressed the importance of proceeding with the implementation of digital transformation plans and development of the country's technological infrastructure.
During the meeting, the president reviewed the latest developments concerning Digilians initiative, especially with regard the executive procedures for enrollment in the initiative, due to start in September 2025, Presidential Spokesman Mohamed Shennawy said.
Within this context, Minister Talaat said the initiative is open for all youth of both genders, from various academic and professional specializations, and from all Egyptian governorates. The selection process will be based on objective criteria.
He pointed out that the study programs will include multiple tracks, such as intensive diplomas, specialized diplomas, professional master's degrees, and academic master's degrees.
All programs will be offered completely free of charge, including accommodation, living expenses, and training, he said, adding that the curricula will cover a comprehensive set of technical, personal, linguistic, life, and leadership and freelancing skills.
The spokesperson also noted that President Sisi stood on the agreements being signed with a large number of international and local companies operating in Egypt to receive trainees after completing the theoretical study period for practical training to acquire technical skills.
The initiative will focus on supporting trainees to present a profitable technology-based project idea, participate in Egypt's digital projects, and assist all trainees in creating accounts on freelancing platforms. (MENA)

Recently, reports have surfaced that Egyptian authorities plan to evacuate the UNESCO world heritage landmark, including its Greek monks, as part of the Egyptian government's Great Transfiguration Project, a claim officials have repeatedly denied. However, Egyptian officials have repeatedly affirmed that the project focuses on developing the surrounding city, not the monastery itself. Constructed in 548 AD in South Sinai, the St. Catherine's Monastery is recognised as one of the world's oldest monasteries and holds profound religious and historical significance. During the call, President Sisi addressed recent rumors regarding Saint Catherine's Monastery, emphasizing Egypt's unwavering commitment to preserving its sacred religious status. He underscored that no infringement upon the monastery's sanctity would occur, referencing a recent judicial ruling that reinforces the site's heritage and spiritual significance. President Sisi's remarks came in response to rumors—reported by Al Arabiya Net—alleging that Saint Catherine's Monastery was being evacuated of its monks in preparation for its sale. On May 28, 2025, the Ismailia Court of Appeal's Taba Sinai Mission ruled on a case concerning disputed land in South Sinai. The ruling, delivered by Judge Alaa Mustafa Abdel Razek, along with Counselors Hassanein Ahmed Al-Wasif and Amir Hassan Abu Al-Leil, affirmed the monks' rights to use and perform religious rites at the monastery and its affiliated archaeological sites. While these sites remain public property owned by the state, they are under the religious stewardship of the monastery's bishop, appointed by Presidential Decree No. 306 of 1974, and are supervised by the Supreme Council of Antiquities. The court further ruled that existing land use agreements between the monastery and local authorities remain valid, dismissing allegations of illegal land seizure. It also clarified that remaining disputed lands fall within protected nature reserves and cannot be claimed through prescription or ownership, as they are classified as public property. The court concluded that the remaining disputed plots of land are nature reserves, all of which are public state property, and cannot be disposed of or owned by prescription. No contracts have been issued regarding them by the competent authority. On May 29, 2025, Egypt's Presidency issued a statement to reiterate ts full commitment to preserving the 'unique and sacred religious status' of Saint Catherine's Monastery and preventing its violation. The Presidency affirmed that the recent court ruling consolidates this status, aligning with the points President Abdel Fattah El Sisi emphasized during his recent visit to Athens on May 7. The Presidency also affirmed the importance of preserving the close and fraternal relations that bind the two countries and peoples and ensuring that they are not jeopardized. Egypt's foreign ministry's official spokesman also stressed on Thursday that rumors about seizing St. Catherine's Monastery and its affiliated land are completely unfounded. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this decision represents a significant escalation and a blatant disregard for international legitimacy. It warned that such actions exacerbate tensions, fuel further violence, and undermine efforts to achieve a two-state solution, which Egypt firmly believes is the only viable path to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
