All WhatsApp users placed on red alert - delete 'dangerous' new message now
WhatsApp users must be on high alert and avoid being fooled by the return of a popular scam.
Anyone who regularly uses WhatsApp - or rival text message platforms - must keep an eye out for the resurgence of a worrying attack. It appears that scammers are back and trying to steal money using the devastating "Hi mum" text. For those not aware, this highly successful scam attempts to trick victims into handing over money to someone they believe is a loved one in trouble.
It has certainly paid off for the online thieves, with millions thought to have been lost to the tactic.
The threat usually starts with a very simple text that just says, "Hi, mum" or "Hi dad". As soon as the victim responds, the online thieves then attempt to trick them into handing over money with pressure tactics used to force payments before people have a chance to consider what they are doing.
Making things even more worrying is the use of AI. Scammers can now create voice messages which sound just like the family member in need. These are then used to increase the chances of an attack being successful.
"We're hearing of instances where AI voice impersonation technology is being used to create WhatsApp and SMS voice notes, making the scam seem ever more realistic," Chris Ainsley, Santander's head of fraud risk management, explained.
'If you're ever asked for money out of the blue on any social or communication platform, verify the request by picking up the phone.'
Security experts are also warning users to be wary before replying to any messages that ask for money or begin with "Hi mum".
"Scammers aren't hacking devices, they're hacking emotions," Luis Corrons, Security Evangelist at Norton explained.
"These 'Hi Mum' messages weaponise trust, urgency and love. And that makes them more dangerous than any malware. This scam works not because parents are careless, but because they care.
"When you get a message from your child saying they're in trouble, your first instinct is to help. Scammers know that and exploit it."
Norton has also now announced five vital tips on how you can protect yourself and your loved ones from these attacks.

• Contact them in person: Reach out to your child using the number you already know. This can quickly reveal whether something is off.
• Be careful with generic language: If a message starts with "Hi Mum" or "Hi Dad" and sounds impersonal or unlike your child's usual tone, be cautious.
• Question financial emergencies: Emotional pressure is common in these scams. Stay calm and verify the situation before making any decisions.
• Stay up to date: Learn about emerging scams and make sure your phone is protected with trusted security software.

Brother of murdered Glasgow taxi boss vows to get justice 23 years on
He believes his brother was killed by three men and has given detectives the name of a fourth – a Glasgow businessman – who sanctioned the hit. The brother of a taxi firm owner murdered 23 years ago has vowed to finally get justice for his loved ones. Businessman Alexander Blue was attacked outside his luxury home in Glasgow's West End in 2002 and died two days later from his head injuries. His older brother Billy, 67, and mum Kathy, 91, are desperate to see the case solved after more than two decades of pain. But they fear they're running out of time as yet another anniversary nears. Billy recently underwent major surgery while Kathy requires constant care. Billy believes his brother was killed by three men and has given detectives the name of a fourth – a Glasgow businessman – who sanctioned the hit. He claims one man lured his brother out of his home while two others were waiting to overpower him. In an exclusive interview with the Record, Billy said: 'Alex needed someone familiar to put him at ease, to distract him, because Alex was a big guy and could look after himself. 'Alex was clearly taken by surprise by someone he trusted. He would not normally have given up without a struggle.' He insists there is enough evidence to bring the killers to justice. Billy, of Robroyston, Glasgow, added: 'It should never have taken this long and the evidence is there. 'The police are quite aware of who was behind my brother's death. There is no mystery about this. The dogs on the street know who killed Alex. 'It's time to bring those responsible to justice.' Alex, then 41, was last seen studying business papers at about 8pm in his favourite coffee bar, just off Byres Road, on the night he was attacked. Police got a telephone call just before 12.30am on June 25. A neighbour had found Alex unconscious in a pool of blood in the drive of his Dundonald Road home. The door of his Porsche was open, as was the door to his home. But nothing had been stolen. His injuries were so bad his mum didn't recognise him when she saw him in hospital. In the early days of the probe, detectives faced major obstacles. Officers hit a wall of silence, with few clues and no eye-witnesses. Police clash with PSG yobs at Champions League parade on second day of chaos
Paris Saint-Germain supporters clashed with riot police for a second night in the French capital, following the club's historic Champions League victory on Saturday. Riots erupted on the Champs Elysee on Sunday night as wild scenes around Paris St Germain's European Cup celebrations entered a second night. Crowds of supporters attacked police on the world-famous venue in the French capital on Sunday evening, as the PSG team took part in a victory parade following theirvictory over Inter Milan in the Champions League, reports the Mirror. "They are throwing everything they can at us," said an officer at the scene, as cops responded with tear gas and baton in a desperate bid to restore order. Gangs armed with bricks and metal poles - looted from nearby building sites - battled with gendarmes. Shocking footage showed cars caught in the crossfire, as terrified drivers were told to lock themselves in their vehicles. The violence came just hours after two people lost their life during intense nationwide violence following PSG being crowned European football champions for the first time in Munich, Germany, on Saturday night. One of the worst incidents took place in Dax, in the south-west of France, where a 17-year-old was knifed in the stomach. "He was part of a crowd celebrating the PSG win in designated fanzone, and died from his wounds in hospital' said a local police spokesman, without naming the deceased. An investigation is underway, and CCTV is being used to try and find those responsible.' He remains in intensive care, placed in a coma with devastating head and eye injuries. In Grenoble, in eastern France, a car attempting 'a handbrake turn on a tram line' ploughed into a young family of four, severely wounding them. A total of 294 people were arrested for football -related violence and looting in Paris as France's Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, described trouble makers as 'barbarians'. Reacting to the disorder on X, Mr Retailleau said: "True PSG fans are getting excited about their team's magnificent performance. "Meanwhile, barbarians have taken to the streets of Paris to commit crimes and provoke law enforcement. I have asked the internal security forces to react vigorously to these abuses. "I offer my support to the Police Prefect and all the police officers who are ensuring everyone's safety this evening. It is unacceptable that it is not possible to party without fearing the savagery of a minority of thugs who respect nothing." The Champs-Élysées was locked down in a ring of steel, with stores boarding up windows and barricading entrances. However, that didn't deter looters from ransacking shops, including a Foot Locker and a Maisons du Monde furniture store, said a police spokesman. Masks thugs in hoodies were seen prowling the streets, while discared mattresses were set alight, sending thick black smoke billowing through the night sky. There was even fighting reported around the Eiffel Tower, which was lit up in PSG's red, white and blue following their 5-0 win. Around 5,400 police officers were on duty across Paris at the weekend, as trouble was always expected, whatever the result. PSG fans have built a notorious reputation for violence in recent years, with incidents against Arsenal and Aston Villa supporters during this year's Champion's League campaign. There was also trouble reported in Munich, where rival French and Italian fans fought each other. Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, the PSG club president, appealed for calm on Sunday, as PSG took part in a victory parade in central Paris.

Body found in search for woman reported missing on Scots island as family informed
Alison MacDonald vanished from the Isle of Lewis. A body has been found in the search for a Scots woman who was reported missing this morning. A missing persons probe was launched to trace Alison MacDonald. The 58-year-old vanished from the village of Back, on the Isle of Lewis. She was last seen between 10 and 11am in the village's Lighthill area. Police Scotland appealed to the public for assistance with the search, saying she had been reported missing this morning, Sunday, June 1, 2025. Sergeant Michael Clark said: "We're increasingly concerned for Alison's welfare and are carrying out extensive enquiries to trace her. I'd urge anyone who has information on Alison's whereabouts, or who thinks they may have seen her, to contact police. "Anyone with sheds or outbuildings is encouraged to check these areas. I understand Back is a close-knit community and people will want to assist with searches, however I urge you not to put yourself in danger. "Please speak to officers or other emergency services on the island if you are planning to help look for Alison." Anyone with information should call Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 1363 of 1 June. But this evening, the force said a body had been recovered in the search to find her. They said: "Around 6.10pm on Sunday, 1 June, 2025, the body of a woman was recovered near to the village of Back, Isle of Lewis. "The family of 58-year-old Alison MacDonald, who had been reported missing on Sunday 1 June, has been informed. There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
