National farm safety measures for this year announced
The National Farm Safety Measure 2025 provides grant aid covering 60% of the eligible cost of up to four power take off (PTO) shaft covers.
Announcing the measure, Mr Healy-Rae said: "Properly fitted and well-maintained PTO-shaft covers are essential when it comes to protecting everyone on farms from the risk of a serious or fatal injury involving PTO-powered machinery. I am reopening the National Farm Safety Measure to encourage farmers to replace PTO shaft covers that are defective or missing.'
From 2015 to 2024, farm vehicles and machinery have accounted for almost half of all fatalities on farms. Entanglement in PTO shafts has resulted in numerous fatalities and life-changing injuries to Irish farmers and their workers.
The greatest investment that farmers can make regarding farm safety is time — time to identify the hazards on the farm and time to put corrective actions in place.
"I am encouraging farmers to take out their Farm Safety Code of Practice risk assessment, use it to identify and review the hazards around the farm, such as inadequately protected PTO-shaft covers, and then put the necessary steps in place to minimise or eliminate the risks. When it comes to farm safety, complacency or inaction can be unforgiving,' Mr Healy-Rae added.
The Farm Safety Measure is being funded from the exchequer and will be open until November 7 on the agfood website.
Grant aid under the measure is at a rate of 60% subject to max eligible cost of €100 per PTO shaft cover for up to four PTO shaft covers.
Farmers who previously applied for the grant under the National Farm Safety Measure in 2023 and 2024 are also eligible for this measure.

Lidl issues 'do not eat' warning as popular product recalled over health fears
Lidl has issued a warning to customers as the supermarket chain announced an urgent recall of a popular chicken product sold in Irish stores as it could pose health risks. Lidl has issued a recall over its 380g Red Hen 4 Tempura Chicken Steaks this week due to the item containing milk, which has not been emphasised on the label. While the ingredient had been listed on the product's label, it had not been declared in bold and due to this the product has been deemed a risk to any shoppers with an allergy or intolerance to milk. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) explained in a statement: "Milk is not emphasised in the ingredients list of the above batches of Red Hen Tempura 4 Chicken Steaks. Lidl is recalling 380g packs of Red Hen 4 Tempura Chicken Steaks "This may make the batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of milk and therefore, these consumers should not eat the implicated batches. The affected batches are being recalled from Lidl stores." The recalled batches of Red Hen Tempura four pack chicken steaks (380g) are those with Best Before dates of: 11/12/2026, 16/12/2026, 22/12/2026 and 30/12/2026. Lidl has apologised for any inconvenience caused because of the recall as they warned customers who have an allergy or intolerance to milk not to eat the affected product. Instead, they should return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund. "Lidl is recalling the above Tempura 4 Chicken Steaks with the Best Before Dates listed above due to the allergen Milk not being declared in bold in the ingredients list," a spokesperson for the supermarket giant said in a statement. "If you have purchased the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to Milk, we advise you not to consume it. Instead, please return the product to a Lidl store for a full refund, with or without a receipt. "Lidl wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused. Any customers with queries or concerns can contact our Customer Services Team on the number below. "Lidl Customer Services: 01 920 3010 (Republic of Ireland) | 0289 568 4888 (Northern Ireland)." The company has also issued point-of-sale notices in stores and said that it has contacted relevant allergy support organisations to inform their members about the recall. Alex Dunne claims another F2 podium finish as Pepe Marti's Hungaroring victory subject to stewards' review
Marti led from the lights but was pushed all the way by Rodin Motorsport's Dunne, who mounted a late charge after muscling past Arvid Lindblad in a bold move that split the Campos teammates. The 19-year-old Offaly driver closed to within DRS range on the final lap, but Marti defended aggressively, with Dunne forced wide on the penultimate corner after a last-ditch overtake attempt around the outside. The Irishman was very unhappy in the aftermath, claiming he had been 'brake-tested' by Marti earlier behind the safety car. The Campos driver is under investigation for a possible delta time breach, while Dunne himself was noted for a yellow flag infringement. Jak Crawford completed the podium after finally getting past Lindblad in the closing laps. The American's persistence paid off after a safety car, triggered by Sebastian Montoya's stranded PREMA, bunched up the field and reignited the battle behind the leaders. Pole-sitter Roman Stanek saw his race unravel early on after contact with PREMA's Gabriele Mini, who received a 10-second penalty for spinning the Czech driver out of contention. Montoya impressed early, climbing from 21st to 14th before his retirement. Further back, Williams juniors Luke Browning and Victor Martins fought hard for fifth, while John Bennett was handed a five-second penalty for forcing Montoya off track earlier in the race. Despite crossing the line second, Dunne was left frustrated by Marti's defensive tactics but with the stewards still to make their final call, the result may yet change. Regardless, it was another strong showing from the Irish driver as he continues to underline his growing credentials in the paddock. The provisional results see Dunne move joint third in the standings on 122 points, level with Crawford with Richard Verschoor a further point ahead and Leonardo Fornaroli top on 127 ahead of tomorrow's feature race.
