Federal Youth Authority launches ‘Youth Social Missions Programme'

Osaka, Japan – The Federal Youth Authority (FYA) has launched the 'Youth Social Missions Programme', a new initiative that embodies the UAE's commitment to championing volunteer work and sustainable development, designed to prepare young Emiratis to join the country's social missions around the world, including humanitarian, developmental, and cultural taskforces.
The programme aims to develop a skilled national workforce through training workshops geared towards fostering social responsibility among Emirati youth, in line with the 'Community and Values' pillar of the National Youth Agenda 2031.
Launched from Japan, this ambitious programme seeks to empower young Emiratis to represent their country in missions that are a national priority, as well as to instil a deep-rooted culture of volunteer work and social responsibility, reflecting the UAE's authentic values. Participants in the programme can look forward to developing specialised skills through dedicated training courses, which enables them to engage effectively in the field and make a tangible impact.
Moreover, the programme serves to reinforce global crisis response efforts, and contributes towards achieving the sustainable development goals and enhancing the UAE's cultural exchange and constructive soft power on the international stage through active youth participation.

Active roles in a changing world
The 'Youth Social Missions Programme' is designed to empower Emirati youth to undertake impactful roles across international humanitarian, developmental, and cultural spheres. The 'Humanitarian Missions' component will focus on delivering urgent aid to disaster and crisis-affected regions, including food, medical supplies, psychological support, and participation in relief efforts.
Meanwhile, 'Developmental Missions' will concentrate on implementing sustainable projects to enhance quality of life, such as school construction, educational support, and enhancing living conditions, alongside participation in environmental initiatives like afforestation, beach clean-ups, and addressing climate change impacts.
Lastly, 'Cultural Missions' aim to foster cultural exchange and showcase Emirati identity by organising events, educational programmes, and initiatives that promote understanding and communication among diverse cultures.

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has issued a federal decree-law establishing the National Anti-Narcotics Authority and appointed Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan as its Chairman. This step aims to strengthen the national ecosystem for combating narcotics, and unify the federal and local effort in this regard, to ensure the safety of the UAE community and its members. The new Authority - established to replace the General Department of Anti-Narcotics in the Ministry of Interior – is an independent federal entity affiliated to the UAE Cabinet. The Authority is tasked with formulating and implementing policies, legislation, and strategies to combat narcotics, as well as tracking and dismantling smuggling and distribution networks in coordination with relevant authorities at both federal and local levels. The National Anti-Narcotics Authority will undertake a comprehensive set of vital mandates, reflecting the UAE's strategic vision to bolster community security, combat various drug-related crimes, and ensure an effective legislative and operational environment to curb this phenomenon. A key mandate includes tackling drug trafficking by tracking and dismantling smuggling and distribution networks, coordinating with security and judicial authorities to ensure offenders are brought to justice in accordance with the nation's laws. The Authority will also focus on developing and refining public policies, legislation, and strategies related to combating narcotics and the emerging crime patterns associated with them. In addressing the circulation of materials and substances that may be used in the manufacturing of drugs or antinarcotics, the Authority is tasked with proposing and establishing regulations and conditions for handling "chemical precursors" used for non-medical purposes. This includes developing licensing mechanisms, trading and storage conditions, and customs clearance procedures, in coordination with the relevant entities and submitting these to the Cabinet for approval, ensuring lawful use of chemicals and preventing their misuse in illegal activities. To strengthen coordination between federal and local entities, the Authority will create and manage a national centralised database, accessible to all federal and local entities working on combating narcotics in the UAE. Sheikh Hamdan praises 'remarkable success' of Dubai wedding programme as demand surges
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, on Monday hailed the "remarkable success" of a major Emirati family support strategy which has helped hundreds of couples to get married. Sheikh Hamdan said the Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum Family Programme had made a "tangible difference" in the lives of Emiratis as Dubai increases efforts to champion family stability and growth. The Dubai Wedding Programme - launched in January last year under the directives of Sheikha Hind, wife of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai - has witnessed a 218 per cent surge in demand for its services, year on year. The initiative offers citizens incentives to help reduce wedding costs – including marriage planning services and holding parties in modern halls across the emirate. Family counselling for newlyweds is also provided, along with marriage planning, family management and financial advice for young couples. Sheikh Hamdan said 27 per cent of all marriages in Dubai were registered with the support of the social welfare scheme. The Dubai Crown Prince said the project highlighted Sheikha Hind's commitment to "enhancing community wellbeing" and spoke of its importance to the emirate's wider development goals under the Dubai Social Agenda 33. "The Dubai Social Agenda 33 continues to build on this momentum, grounded in the belief that investing in families is the most powerful investment in the nation's future," Sheikh Hamdan said, in comments shared by Dubai Media Office. In its first year, the Dubai Weddings programme helped to enable 344 weddings, accounting for 28.3 per cent of all Emirati weddings in Dubai by the end of last year. It also contributed to a 10.1 per cent increase in Emirati weddings last year, compared to 2023. Under the Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum Family Programme, a remote work option on Fridays is in place for mothers during the first year after maternity leave and a reduction in monthly premium for housing loans to a minimum of Dh3,333 for beneficiaries of the Dubai Weddings programme, provided their monthly income does not exceed Dh30,000. Promoting the family unit In January last year, the Ruler of Dubai launched a Dh208 billion ($56.63 billion) strategy to double the number of Emirati families in the emirate in a decade. Sheikh Mohammed set out plans to increase housing standards, health care and quality of life for citizens. In June, Sheikh Mohammed issued a decree providing fully paid marriage leave of 10 days for Dubai government employees. It also allows employees to combine marriage leave with any other leave they are entitled to. The decree covers Emirati employees working in government agencies and authorities supervising special development zones and free zones. The UAE's Minister of Family recently told The National that the needs of families needed to be at the centre of government decision-making. She made her declaration as she outlined efforts to introduce a national fertility strategy aimed at addressing declining birth rates. Plans were discussed at the June meeting of the Federal National Council (FNC) during which it was confirmed feasibility studies were under way. The project is being launched against a global backdrop of reduced fertility rates, and the UAE is no different. The FNC session heard that there was an 11 per cent drop in births among Emiratis between 2015 and 2022, while non-Emirati residents had experienced a 5 per cent increase during the same period. There were 30,889 Emiratis born in 2022 and 65,762 expatriates. 'Fertility rates are declining globally, and the UAE is not immune,' said Sana bint Mohammed Suhail, Minister of Family, in a statement sent to The National. 'But where others may see a looming challenge, we see a chance to lead – by placing family back at the centre of policy, in ways that are meaningful, modern, and uniquely preservative of our Emirati identity.' This is now a 'strategic priority' according to Ms Suhail, who added the first phase of a national assessment has been launched. Several government agencies are now involved in the creation of the strategy.

This includes coordinating with relevant agencies at both federal and local levels to track and dismantle smuggling and distribution networks. Its expanded mandate reflects the UAE's strategic vision to provide a robust legislative and operational environment for addressing drug-related threats. By consolidating responsibilities under one federal entity, the government aims to ensure cohesive national policies, faster response to emerging drug trends, and tighter law enforcement. Among its core responsibilities, NANA will work closely with judicial and security bodies to ensure offenders are prosecuted under the nation's laws. It will also oversee the development of legal frameworks and submit new regulations to the Cabinet for approval, ensuring alignment with international best practices. Stronger controls at entry points As part of its operational scope, the authority will monitor land, sea, and air entry points in collaboration with national entities to prevent the entry or exit of narcotic substances. It will track and inspect individuals, goods, and vehicles, with the aim of curbing illicit activities at the country's borders. In addition, NANA will monitor suspicious activities and suspected trafficking operations nationwide, working with concerned authorities to bolster intelligence capabilities and early detection mechanisms. The authority is also charged with regulating the circulation of chemical precursors used in drug manufacturing. It will propose licensing mechanisms and oversee trading, storage, and customs clearance procedures in coordination with relevant agencies. These measures aim to prevent the misuse of chemicals while ensuring lawful handling for legitimate purposes. Unified data and national coordination To enhance inter-agency cooperation, the Authority will establish and manage a centralised national database.
