Dodgers' Tanner Scott exits 9th inning with apparent injury

New York Times7 days ago
LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers' already prevalent need for bullpen help only increased on Monday night, as the team's prized free-agent closer addition, Tanner Scott, grimaced after releasing a slider into the dirt and exited alongside head athletic trainer Thomas Albert.
Scott, 30, had come back out for the ninth inning after completing the eighth as the sliding Dodgers sought to snap their skid with a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Twins. He proceeded to walk a batter and hit another with two strikes before working to Jeffers. It wasn't immediately clear what the injury was.

The left-hander, who is in the first year of a four-year, $72 million deal as the most expensive free-agent reliever signed last offseason, has already struggled plenty in his first season in Los Angeles, with a 4.14 ERA in his first 47 appearances to go with seven blown saves in 26 tries. Kirby Yates, another free-agent addition this winter who has struggled, entered for Scott and recorded the final two outs, with Carlos Correa driving what could have been the game-tying home run to the wall before James Outman camped under it in center field.
Given Scott and Yates' performance thus far this season along with injuries to Evan Phillips (out for the season), Michael Kopech (out until at least late August), Brusdar Graterol (out until at least September) and Blake Treinen (who could return within about a week), the Dodgers were already exploring high-end relief options, as The Athletic reported this week. Expect that to only intensify with Scott exiting Monday night.

Cowboys LT Tyler Guyton reportedly feared to have suffered torn ACL in training camp

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyler Guyton is feared to have sustained a torn ACL, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. Guyton suffered a leg injury in practice on Monday and had not yet undergone imaging to confirm the feared diagnosis, according to the report. If confirmed, the injury would be a significant blow to a Cowboys team seeking to return to playoff contention in 2025. This story will be updated.

Cam Cannarella agrees with the Miami Marlins as 313 of top 315 MLB draft picks sign

NEW YORK (AP) — Clemson outfielder Cam Cannarella agreed with the Miami Marlins on a $2,277,425 signing bonus, and just two of the top 315 players selected in this month's amateur baseball draft failed to reach agreements by Monday's deadline. Selected 43rd overall by Miami with a competitive balance pick, Cannarella agreed to a deal just above the $2,276,700 slot value. Right-handed pitcher Angel Cervantes was the top pick not to sign. Selected 50th overall by Pittsburgh from Earl Warren High School in Downey, California, he says he will attend UCLA. The Pirates will receive an extra pick in next year's draft as compensation, No. 51 overall. Outfielder Mason Ligenza, selected 195th by the Los Angeles Dodgers, didn't sign and said he will attend the University of Pittsburgh. MLB's deadline applied to all players in the draft except those who exhausted their college eligibility, a group that can sign until a week before next year's draft. Shortstop Eli Willits, taken first by Washington, signed for an $8.2 million bonus. UC Santa Barbara right-hander Tyler Bremner, selected second by the Los Angeles Angels, agreed at $7,689,525. LSU left-hander Kade Anderson, the No. 3 pick, agreed with Seattle at $8.8 million. Colorado signed Stillwater High School infielder Ethan Holliday, brother of Jackson and son of Matt, for $9 million. No team exceeded its signing bonus pool by more than 5%, which would have caused the loss of a first-round pick in next year's draft. Twenty went over their pool by 5% or less, including 12 by exactly 5%. No team has ever exceeded its signing bonus pool by more than 5%. ___ AP MLB:

Rockies pitcher Biembenido Brito and free agent outfielder Pablo Abad suspended for drug tests

NEW YORK (AP) — Colorado Rockies minor league pitcher Biembenido Brito was suspended for 60 games and free agent outfielder Pablo Abad for 56 on Monday by Major League Baseball following positive tests for performance-enhancing substances. Brito tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance Stanozolol and for Hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic and masking agent. He was disciplined under the minor league drug program, the commissioner's office said. Abad tested positive for Stanozolol and was penalized under the drug program for minor league players assigned outside the U.S. and Canada. Brito, a 22-year-old right-hander, agreed to a minor league contract with Texas in 2021 that included a $10,000 signing bonus. He was released by the Rangers in July 2024 and signed with the Rockies on May 23. He was 1-2 with a 2.97 ERA in seven starts and nine relief appearances for the rookie-level Arizona Complex League Rockies, striking out 38 and walking 18 in 33 1/3 innings. Brito is 6-7 with a 5.94 ERA in 19 starts and 31 relief appearances over parts of four minor league seasons. Abad, 19, signed with Cincinnati in June 2023 for a $10,000 bonus and was released last November. He hit .121 with one homer and six RBIs in 36 games over two seasons in the Dominican Summer League. Abad's suspension will start when he signs with a major league organization. Eleven players have been suspended this year for positive tests, including nine under minor league programs. Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar was suspended for 80 games on March 31 and Philadelphia Phillies closer José Alvarado for 80 games on May 25 under the major league program. ___ AP MLB:
