When I got the idea, I felt it would work well with STR sir: Ramkumar Balakrishnan

Time of India05-05-2025

After the acclaimed Parking , director
is now all set to start the shoot of his next film, which will star
,
and
in the lead roles. In a short interview with us, the filmmaker talks about why he wanted to do a film that's in a totally different genre to Parking , what made him rope in STR and how Santhanam agreed to be part of this project…
'I WROTE WITH STR IN MIND'
The filmmaker begins by saying that his new film, referred to as #STR49, will be set in a college in Chennai and STR would be playing the role of a college student.

Quiz him why he chose the star, and he says, 'When I got the idea, I felt it would work well with STR sir, but didn't know whether that would materialise or not. Still, when writing, I did write with him in mind. Luckily, I got a chance to narrate the script to him, and he, too, loved it. It all felt like a dream.'
He says that the script needed a star like STR. 'I needed to tell a lot of backstories to narrate this story. But when a star like him plays this character, I don't have it,' he says.
He adds, 'STR's screen presence and the fact that he is going to play a college student again help elevate my idea. I've enjoyed his films like Manmadhan and Vallavan in which he played a college student, so this film will help connect him even more with the Gen Z kids. He will be sporting a stylish look in the film, different from his current look.'
'SANATHANAM SIR'S CHARACTER IS NOT ONE THAT EXISTS FOR THE SAKE OF COMEDY'
Ramkumar has pulled off a casting coup by getting Santhanam, who has only been playing lead roles for almost the past 10 years, to be part of this project.
Sharing how he got the actor on board, he says, 'I'd worked with Santhanam sir in Dikkiloona , so we know each other. And after watching Parking , he used to reach out to me and praise me now and then. I felt he'd be right for a role in this film, and since he has a good impression of me, he agreed to listen to the narration. Moreover, Simbu sir and he share a great bond, and they have been meaning to work together again.' He clarifies that the actor's will not be a comedian role.

'This will be a second lead type of role, which will also have moments of emotion, and not a character that just exists for the sake of comedy,' he says.
'I WANTED TO MAKE AN OUT-AND-OUT ENTERTAINER'
Ramkumar says his film 'will be totally different from Parking '. 'I didn't want to be slotted as a filmmaker who makes films only in a specific genre — thriller — so I decided to do a big-scale out-and-out entertainer led by a star that would offer a complete theatrical experience.
My only motive with this film is to fully entertain the audience,' he signs off.
'Sai Abhyankkar has composed all the songs'
On getting hotshot composer Sai Abhyankkar to do the music, the director says, 'I've found Sai Abhyankkar's songs very interesting and Simbu sir, too, suggested we roped him in for the music. He's very sweet and comfortable to work with. We have finished composing the songs and the lyrics are getting ready now.'

Musk-Trump Saga is Not A Biblical Or Pop Culture Event. It's Dangerous

Cross your heart and confess: did you, or not, regret not spilling the beans, or tea, as Gen Z calls it, after being let down by a close friend and confidante? Did this regret pinch harder after the recent social media spat between two erstwhile chums? Have you never muttered, going through your former friend's feed, 'wow, liar'? Have you never typed out a 'truth bomb', either mentioning them by name or using only thinly veiled sobriquets, only to have second thoughts before pressing 'SEND'? In a self-congratulatory inner voice, you tell yourself, 'I'm not like them,' and feel smug in the goodness that you just attributed to yourself. Goodness, that has trumped deep hurt and petty vengeance. $38 Billion: The Price Of Revenge What is it worth, though? In the case of the wealthiest man on earth, only $38 billion. Elon Musk ended up losing a sum approximately equal to Bhutan's GDP from his personal net worth at the end of the day he spent trying to exact his pound of flesh from the president of the United States. Hurt and revenge are the same for the rich and mighty and the poor and hustling; only the price tags differ. If the James Bond movies are to be trusted, your most vicious enemy happens to be a jilted lover or a close accomplice. M, the MI6 chief, can only be brought down by Raoul Silva, a former agent. Silva is deeply hurt by Mother's (M) betrayal of him in the past and eventually exacts his revenge. Thus, Skyfall. This shadowy world of espionage, intrigue, and bloodshed, however, has certain principles. Silva ends M but does not paint the media red about M's misdemeanours. Judas And Brutus Let's go from Bond to Bible. Even Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, did not betray his 'master' openly. Kissing Christ's cheek and addressing him respectfully, Judas revealed the 'Son of God' to Herod's men. Even in his perfidy, Judas maintained decorum. A more public betrayal happened almost a century earlier when Julius Caesar was assassinated by close aide and friend Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus and other conspirators at Largo di Torre Argentina in Rome. 'Brutus is an honourable man,' seethed Mark Antony at Caesar's burial. And honourable he was, realigning his loyalty and friendship away from the man he thought was destroying the foundational principles of the Roman Republic. Nothing Noble Here In the Republican implosion underway in the US, however, where are the principles? Unless we agree to hold avarice, megalomania, and unquestioning allegiance as the founding precepts of the American juggernaut, this famous falling out is devoid of anything noble. No Resurrection, no advent of Octavian, not even a good 007 film. This exchange of barbs between two men who publicly promised to change the US and the world less than six months ago has only demonstrated what the nexus of mercantilism, inept policy-making, and self-serving politicking can achieve when two equally headstrong egotists hold all the levers. Why Musk and Trump are at each other's throats now is of lesser consequence than the trickle of information from their jibes at each other. Trump accuses Musk of being post-facto salty over the yet-to-be-presented Big Beautiful Bill, which is supposed to transform the US - whether for better or worse is subject to who you ask. Musk says that he wasn't even aware of the nitty-gritty of the bill, which he was never shown before he exited the White House. Both accuse each other of overplaying their hand. Both claim that the other is dispensable. Only time will tell. 'As Flies To Wanton Boys' What is truly dispensable is voters' trust. Or voters themselves. As reports kept streaming in of DOGE cuts translating into lost lives, both in present and future, due to a lack of funds, the chants of 'Make America Great Again' became louder. It's as if America got transformed into an amorphous human-less entity. Tariff wars competed with real wars. Amidst all of this, Trump and Musk began to drift apart. It will take several hundred man-hours to determine the damage caused to the American public and the rest of the world by the billionaire duo. It takes a third billionaire, the hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, to urge Trump and Musk to make up before it's too late. Musk has responded positively to him; no word from Trump yet. The POTUS is on a different platform. While the internet is abuzz with jokes and memes about this feud, the potentially dangerous aspects of the Trump-Elon partnership have yet to fully unfold. Musk is the personification of the tentative arbitrariness of the second Trump presidency. Or the arbitrary tentativeness. Where everything is big and beautiful one moment and a disaster the next. But it is the regular folk, the same ones madly refreshing their social feeds for the latest in this feud, who have been paying the price for such shenanigans and tantrums. When multi-billion-dollar contracts get cancelled, or trade deals spell disaster, ordinary people on the streets get swatted like flies. Like Shakespeare once wrote: 'As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods; They kill us for their sport'.

The Glam Up Trends Report is a reflection of that belief, an effort to listen, understand, and anticipate what beauty means to the next generation. This report is the result of a deep, collaborative effort between Flipkart and NielsenIQ teams.' Priyanka Bhargav, Senior Director, Research & Insights, Flipkart, said, 'Beauty today is bold, expressive, and constantly evolving and no one captures that spirit quite like Gen Z. The Glam Up Trends Report helps decode this dynamic shift. With rich data, real consumer voices, and cultural context, it highlights what's truly resonating. Trends like Hydration Daze, Scientific Obsession, kiSKIN, and Cherry Cherry Lady go beyond surface appeal, they reflect how young India is engaging with beauty in deeper, more expressive ways. This report is the result of a thoughtful collaboration between the Flipkart Insights Team, the beauty and personal Care team, and our intelligence partner, NielsenIQ. We hope it sparks fresh thinking, challenges conventions, and inspires the next wave of beauty innovation.' Key Trends: Skin-First Beauty Becomes the Default : The foundation of beauty is now skincare. Minimalist routines with hydration and barrier repair are dominating both shopping carts and social feeds. Flipkart recorded a 120% spike in gel moisturisers and over 80% growth in face serums, while face wash sales rose 123% year-on-year. Shoppers are prioritising lean formulations with active ingredients such as salicylic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin C, choosing to treat rather than cover. K-beauty products continue to surge in popularity, with sheet masks, snail mucin serums, and hydrating essences seeing over 90% growth year-on-year, reflecting a growing appetite for globally trending skincare routines. Scientific Obsession & Hydration Daze : Beauty routines are increasingly rooted in science. Consumers seek efficacy and transparency, gravitating toward ingredient-first formulations like powder cleansers, dew boosters, and barrier-repair creams. 62% of Gen Z search for beauty by ingredients, not brands. Face creams and gels rose 1.4x YoY, and niacinamide searches surged ~70%, underscoring the rising preference for hydration-focused, evidence-backed skincare. Hair Game Strong : Hair rituals on Flipkart are redefined, with shoppers moving from traditional oils to performance-driven solutions rooted in science. The demand for peptide-powered serums, K-gloss treatments, rice water-infused rinses, and scalp-balancing treatments has accelerated, reflecting a clear shift toward targeted, ingredient-led care. Flipkart witnessed a 2x growth in sales of hair serum, and searches for scalp-related concerns, like dandruff serums and itch-relief treatments, have grown by over 85%. This signals a new consumer mindset of haircare should be as intentional and effective as skincare, lightweight, functional, and focused on long-term scalp and strand health. Scent-sational : Fragrance as a Daily Ritual of Self-Expression: Fragrance on Flipkart has transformed from an occasional indulgence to a daily ritual of identity and mood-setting. Consumers are embracing 'smellmaxxing', layering mists, roll-ons, and perfumes to create personalised scent profiles that reflect their personality and routine. Flipkart recorded a 2.2x growth in overall fragrance sales in Q125 vs Q124, with searches for attars alone increasing by 2.5x, signalling renewed interest in culturally rooted, artisanal scents. Gourmand notes inspired by desserts like marshmallow, pistachio, and brown sugar are trending across social channels, especially among younger shoppers. Fragrance today is about more than just smelling good; it's about self-expression, emotional connection, and everyday wearability. Cherry Cherry Lady – Makeup That Does More : Makeup on Flipkart is getting smarter, with functional beauty leading the way. Consumers are choosing hybrid formats that deliver both colour and care. Lip oils, SPF-infused tints, and barrier-friendly blush sticks are replacing traditional, single-purpose products. Shoppers are looking for fewer steps and more benefits, favouring products that adapt to their fast-paced, skin-conscious routines. Gloss-forward lip products continue to gain momentum, while searches for Surma-inspired eye looks have surged 33x in Q1'25 vs Q1'24, reflecting a blend of modern utility and cultural revival. Today's makeup is not just about aesthetics, it's about ease, efficacy, and everyday relevance Sun-In & Stunning : SPF is no longer optional. Daily protection has become a routine essential, with portable sunscreen sticks and gels supporting reapplication habits. Sunscreen sales doubled, and searches for SPF-related products rose by 76% YoY, indicating that sun protection is now seen as both a health and aesthetic necessity Korean Street : The K-Beauty Effect: Korean beauty continues to shape Indian skincare. Products like skin blur serums, serum-infused glow boosters, and mini ' skintellectual snacking ' formats are seeing rapid adoption. Searches for Korean beauty grew ~81% YoY, making it one of the fastest-rising segments on Flipkart. From Plains to Peaks, Beauty Speaks: Regional beauty needs are becoming increasingly important. Variations in air quality, water hardness, humidity, and diet are influencing skin and hair concerns across India. Flipkart is addressing these micro-needs with tailored assortments, especially in Tier 2+ cities, to serve a broader spectrum of Indian consumers The Indian beauty landscape is undergoing a transformation, and Gen Z is at the center of it. With their digital fluency and trend-first mindset, this generation is redefining how beauty is discovered, chosen, and celebrated. For Telugu snacks and foods you loved as a 90s kid, head to Coffee Sangam in Hyderabad

You know those memes that say, 'We did silly things before social media existed'? Well, we also had epic birthday parties —with menus to match. Think back to the late '80s and '90s: sandwiches were cut diagonally, cutlets were crisp and golden, chilli cheese toast was the closest we got to pizza, and puff pastries were non-negotiable. No fancy burgers or sushi platters, just good old comfort food that's now a cherished memory. Coffee Sangam at Jubilee Hills taps into that nostalgia and pairs it with a modern-day twist. This all-day café brings together 90s birthday party staples and Telugu teatime classics — reimagined for today's palate. It is where keema meets puri at breakfast, dosas come perfectly crisp, and eggs are served with a side of heritage. And yes, this is the place that gave Hyderabad its very first bobbatlu croissant (sweetened lentil stuffed flat breads) — a flaky ode to tradition layered with innovation. I gave it a shot, and will not be ordering it again. Styled in warm earthy tones, Coffee Sangam feels like a laidback dining room for your everyday celebrations. On one wall, a painted boat carries people across generations and cultures — a visual metaphor for the sangam or confluence the café hopes to represent. Chef Vignesh puts it best: 'Celebrate surviving work, flatter a good mood, or just treat yourself — no reason needed. Small eats that make everyone smile.' And that is exactly the vibe at Coffee Sangam. Whether it is a cup of strong filter coffee to wake up your soul, or a kadak chai paired with muska bun and a swipe of palm sugar, the café knows its audience. Think palm sugar bun sandwiches — yes, that is a thing now. Not your average bun maska, these buns are unapologetically slathered with butter. Disclaimer: This is not the spot for calorie counters or strict vegans. But if you believe in the power of carbs, butter, and joy —welcome to the table. After a few visits, I had worked my way through most of the menu — but without fail, I always circled back to the peri peri punugulu and pista podi mini idlis (each the size of a one-rupee coin). These are finger foods reimagined, but never too far from their roots. Chef Vignesh curated the menu with a clear brief: revive the nostalgic snacks of the '90s — cutlets, mutton samosas, and old-school sandwiches minus the lettuce-tomato trimmings. The kind of food Gen X grew up on, and Gen Z probably has not met yet. At Coffee Sangam, the cutlet, samosa, and sandwich trio are the true comeback kids, and reason enough to keep returning. It is always comforting to see the basics done right — like a cheese omelette with toast. On lazy mornings, Coffee Sangam makes a strong case for a no-fuss breakfast with a solid filter coffee. The brown laminate on the omelette? That golden crust we all know from homemade breakfasts. 'It's meant to remind you of home,' says Chef Vignesh. If eggs are not your thing, opt for the crispy dosas (served with two chutneys, glistening with ghee) or the puri with keema. You can even order the keema on the side with your dosa — highly recommended. A surprise winner here is the curd rice salad. A comforting bowl of curd rice amped up with puffed rice, crunchy chips, and a zing of lemon pickle — it is exactly the kind of chaos that works. For a sugar fix, go for the Milo French toast or the bread pudding with ice cream. On the drinks side, the coconut milkshake, Irani boba chai, and masala mint iced tea hit the spot — flavourful and not overly sweet. One note: if you have a big appetite, the portion sizes might feel modest. Order more. That is the joy of small plates, after all.
