
Brazil Demonstrates that You Can't Erase Black History
The Trump Administration recently cut funding to the 400 Years of African American History Commission. Another cut targeted the Whitney Plantation in Louisiana and its planned exhibit on resistance to slavery, which had been in the works for three years and was planned to open January 2026. Along with book bans and anti-DEI pronouncements, these efforts threaten to scrub or rewrite the history of slavery and racism in the United States.
Such efforts can do serious damage to our understanding of history. Still, they are not likely to succeed in suppressing the truth. The remarkable history of Palmares, a society formed by Africans who escaped slavery in 17th-century Brazil, points to the negative impact politics can have on historical memory and writing. The history and memory of Palmares also reveals that people can resist attempts to erase hard truths about slavery.
The Portuguese arrived in modern-day Brazil in 1500, establishing coastal settlements. In 1534, they established the Captaincy of Pernambuco, in the Northeast of the country. They brought enslaved captives from Africa to labor in a burgeoning sugar industry. Pernambuco's plantations soon became key engines in a vast and brutal slave empire, the largest in the history of the Atlantic trade. Almost immediately, some enslaved people fled their captivity and established small communities in the interior, in a region that came to be called Palmares. These settlements, known as "maroon communities" in much of the Americas, were called "quilombos" or "mocambos" in Brazil.
From 1630 to 1654, the Dutch invaded and occupied parts of Portuguese Pernambuco, including the lands near Palmares, which withstood withering attacks from the Dutch and Portuguese. During the war, thousands of enslaved people fled and went to Palmares, which eventually had a population that may have exceeded 10,000 or more. It survived for most of the 17th century, despite ongoing attacks by Portuguese seeking to recapture enslaved people and destroy their settlements.
During its heyday, in the 1670s, Palmares grew into a powerful web of communities that resisted these attacks. It was so powerful that eventually the Portuguese crown negotiated with Palmares, much as they did with other powerful military entities.
After years of war, in 1678 the governor of Pernambuco negotiated a peace accord with the Palmares leader Ganga Zumba. As a result of this accord, Ganga Zumba resettled with many followers in a nearby area, where they agreed to live in peace as semi-autonomous vassals to the Portuguese crown.
Other Palmarista leaders, including a man called Zumbi, rejected the treaty, which fell apart the following year, when Ganga Zumba died. The Portuguese invaded the new settlement, capturing and killing the men, women, and children who had been promised peace and protection. For the next decade and a half, Zumbi and other survivors dwelled in homes they forged in the wilderness.
In 1694, colonial forces lay siege to Palmares's most important mocambo. After pounding it with artillery, they attacked and killed an untold number of Palmaristas. They captured several hundred others. Portuguese soldiers killed Zumbi the following year.
The soldiers who assassinated him severed his head and delivered it to the governor, who ordered it placed on a tall stake in a public square, an act meant to 'mollify' white planters, to 'terrorize the Blacks who superstitiously view Zumbi to be immortal,' and to leave no doubt that 'Palmares has been destroyed once and for all.' Over the next two centuries, slavery deepened and Brazil received 12 times the number of enslaved Africans forcibly taken to the United States. Throughout, enslaved people continued to escape and establish new settlements, though none would rival the size of Palmares.
Zumbi's death marks the end of most conventional histories of Palmares. But for more than a century after his death, memories of Zumbi and Palmares were passed down through oral traditions and popular lore in Brazil. They were also preserved in several texts that framed Palmares's defeat in romantic terms, with the Portuguese emerging as heroic victors over valiant Black warriors.
In 1822, Brazil declared independence from Portugal and established an independent monarchy. In the years that followed, nascent national histories incorporated additional romantic accounts of Palmares as part of an effort to establish a national legend that sidestepped slavery and cast Palmares's conquerors as heroes.
It was only on May 13, 1888 that Brazil became the last nation in the western hemisphere to abolish slavery. The act was sealed in a pronouncement by Princess Isabel, who became a President Lincoln-like figure in Brazil, known to many as the benevolent white liberator of the enslaved. This mythology became engrained in Brazilian nation-building, which often washed over the extent and brutality of slavery in order to tell a clean story of national progress and enlightenment. But as in the United States, many archivists, historians, and activists—along with members of the general public —today seek to better understand and reckon with the past.
Counter-narratives about Palmares and Zumbi began to emerge in the 20th century. Some Brazilians clung to older narratives, while others, including radical Black intellectuals and activists, reclaimed Palmares and Zumbi as symbols of resistance. In 1947, for example, Edison Carneiro, a pioneering Black intellectual, published a book on Palmares. He sought to quash dominant narratives that Brazil's history of slavery had been passive and docile. The story of Palmares that he presented showed not only that enslaved Africans resisted slavery but also that they formed a kingdom-sized domain and military might.
When Brazil's military seized control of the country in 1964 and installed an authoritarian dictatorship, Palmares became a contested symbol once again. During the 1970s, a new generation of Black activists mobilized to replace narratives of Princess Isabel as a liberator with another figure: Zumbi.
They faced considerable censorship and repression. The generals who ran the country suspended democratic institutions and attacked university professors and students. Censors targeted ideas and histories that highlighted historical examples of racism and its legacies.
Bringing histories of 17th-century liberation to light was part of a larger, multi-racial mobilization and political, social, and cultural initiative that helped bring down the dictatorship in 1985. Much later, in 2011 Congress declared Nov. 20 the National Day of Zumbi and Black Consciousness, and communities have erected monuments to Zumbi across the nation.
While some see this history as essential to an honest reckoning with Brazil's past, and Zumbi's resistance to slavery as a source of pride and inspiration, these stories threaten existing narratives about the nation. Not all municipalities celebrate Nov. 20 today, for example, and Zumbi monuments have been defaced with racist graffiti.
Yet Brazil's tense history towards memorializing Palmares shows that it is possible to counter even the harshest forms of censorship to reclaim essential histories. In fact, state efforts to whitewash history can inadvertently create opportunities for activists to push narratives in the opposite direction—expanding, rather than narrowing, how slavery and its long legacies are conceived and discussed.
The remarkable 17th-century existence of Palmares and the inspiring afterlives that Black activists across the hemisphere have given it represent a powerful counter to censorship.
Palmares and its historical memory also underscore just how much Americans stand to lose through attempts to curb the telling of histories, such as the efforts to end the 400 Years Commission, the exhibition at the Whitney Plantation, and countless other examples in recent months.
Most of all, the history and memorialization of Palmares remind us how much the present is made by the past. Just as the people who made Palmares inspired future generations to keep its history present and vital, the activists who did so may serve as guiding lights today.

Border czar Tom Homan reveals unprecedented success in Trump's border strategy
Trump administration border czar Tom Homan said the president's leadership has resulted in the most secure border in U.S. history after Border Patrol encountered just 95 illegal immigrants in a single day. "In the last 24 hours the Border Patrol encountered a total of 95 illegal aliens across the entire southern border," Homan posted to X Tuesday night. "That is the lowest number EVER recorded. Compare that to the Biden administration, who surpassed more than 10,000 per day." Homan added the Biden administration released the "vast majority" of the illegal immigrants its border patrol agents encountered back into the U.S. "How many were released under Trump for May?" Homan asked. "Zero." Homan said 62,000 aliens were released in May 2024 under former President Joe Biden. It was the first time a two-digit number was ever recorded at the border. The number of illegal aliens encountered yesterday also shows the border is locked down. Border Patrol officers have told Fox News they are bored because there are few gotaways to chase. "To continue this great work and make it more permanent, we need the Big Beautiful Bill passed so we can finish the job, to include the biggest deportation operation the American people voted for," Homan said in his post on X. "God bless the men and women of [U.S. Customs and Border Protection] and [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement]. President Trump is the Game Changer!" Homan's numbers highlight a common trend since Trump returned to the Oval Office in January. In April, Homan touted how the administration had released a shockingly low number of illegal immigrants. Homan noted at the time that nine illegal aliens had been released, compared to hundreds, if not thousands, of releases in a single day under under Biden. As for the nine who were released, Homan explained the unusual circumstances. "Four of them were material witnesses in a criminal investigation. We needed them here to testify in a serious criminal trial. Four was extreme medical condition," he said. "We couldn't return them because we were in such bad shape. And one was a humanitarian issue." Fox News reported that, on Dec. 22, 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection data indicated there were 4,832 illegal immigrants released on that day alone. On that same day, there were just under 9,000 migrant encounters. At the ports of entry, there were 1,400 releases that day as a result of the CBP One app, which has since been changed to the CBP Home app. The CBP One app was a way for people seeking to enter the country to get prompted for the next steps, whereas the CBP Home app is meant for those in the country illegally to self-deport.

Omar: US being turned into ‘one of the worst countries'
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) criticized the Trump administration's use of the military, saying the U.S. is turning into 'one of the worst countries.' In an interview late last week, Omar noted the deployment of U.S. troops to quell protests in Los Angeles took place in the same week that the administration held the military parade, which celebrated 250 years of the U.S. Army's existence, and which happened to fall on President Trump's birthday and Flag Day. 'Can you imagine that image that is going to be coming out of our country? I mean, I grew up in a dictatorship, and I don't even remember ever witnessing anything like that,' Omar said, referring to her early childhood in Somalia. 'To have a democracy, a beacon of hope for the world, to now be turned into one of the, you know, one of the worst countries, where the military are in our streets without any regard for people's constitutional rights, while our president's spending millions of dollars propping himself up like a failed dictator with a military parade — it is really shocking,' she continued. Omar said that image should inspire Americans to speak out publicly. 'It should be a wake-up call for all Americans to say, 'This is not the country we were born in. It's not the country we believe in. This is not the country our Founding Fathers imagined, and this is not the country that is supported by our Constitution, our ideals, our values.'' As the summer harvest season launches, confusion and uncertainty hang over California fields
As the crucial summer harvest season gets underway in California's vast agricultural regions, farmers and their workers say they feel whiplashed by a series of contradictory signals about how the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration might affect them. California grows more than one-third of the country's vegetables and more than three-quarters of the nation's fruits and nuts in the fertile expanses of the Central Valley, Central Coast and other farming regions. The industry produced nearly $60 billion in goods in 2023, according to state figures — an output that depends heavily on the skilled labor of a workforce that is at least 50% undocumented, according to University of California studies. Without workers, the juicy beefsteak tomatoes that are ripening and must be hand-harvested will rot on the vines. The yellow peaches just reaching that delicate blend of sweet and tart will fall to the ground, unpicked. Same with the melons, grapes and cherries. That's why, when federal immigration agents rolled into the berry fields of Oxnard last week and detained 40 farmworkers, growers up and down the state grew worried along with their workers. Farm laborers, many of whom have lived and worked in their communities for decades, were terrified of being rounded up and deported, separated from their families and livelihoods. Farmers worried that their workforce would vanish — either locked up in detention centers or forced into the shadows for fear of arrest — just as their labor was needed most. Everyone wanted to know whether the raids in Oxnard were the beginning of a broader statewide crackdown that would radically disrupt the harvest season — which is also the period when most farmworkers earn the most money — or just a one-off enforcement action. In the ensuing days, the answers have become no clearer, according to farmers, worker advocates and elected officials. 'We, as the California agricultural community, are trying to figure out what's going on,' said Ryan Jacobsen, chief executive of the Fresno County Farm Bureau and a farmer of almonds and grapes. He added that 'time is of the essence,' because farms and orchards are 'coming right into our busiest time.' After the raids in Ventura County last week, growers across the country began urgently lobbying the Trump administration, arguing that enforcement action on farm operations could hamper food production. They pointed to the fields around Oxnard post-raid, where, according to the Ventura County Farm Bureau, as many as 45% of the workers stayed home in subsequent days. President Trump appeared to get the message. On Thursday, he posted on Truth Social that 'our great farmers,' along with leaders in the hospitality industry, had complained that his immigration policies were 'taking very good, long time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace.' He added that it was 'not good' and 'changes are coming!' The same day, according to a New York Times report, a senior official with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement wrote regional ICE directors telling them to lay off farms, along with restaurants and hotels. 'Effective today, please hold on all work site enforcement investigations/operations on agriculture (including aquaculture and meat packing plants), restaurants and operating hotels,' the official wrote. Many in California agriculture took heart. Then on Monday came news that the directive to stay off farms, hotels and restaurants had been reversed. 'There will be no safe spaces for industries who harbor violent criminals or purposely try to undermine ICE's efforts,' Tricia McLaughlin, an assistant secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, said, according to the Washington Post. 'Worksite enforcement remains a cornerstone of our efforts to safeguard public safety, national security and economic stability.' In California's heartland, Jacobsen of the Fresno County Farm Bureau spoke for many farmers when he said: 'We don't have a clue right now.' Asked Tuesday to clarify the administration's policy on immigration raids in farmland, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said the Trump administration is committed to "enforcing federal immigration law." "While the President is focused on immediately removing dangerous criminal illegal aliens from the country," Jackson said, "anyone who is here illegally is liable to be deported.' Still, Jacobsen and others noted, aside from the upheaval in Ventura County last week, agricultural operations in other parts of the state have largely been spared from mass immigration sweeps. Workers, meanwhile, have continued to show up for work, and most have even returned to the fields in Ventura County. There has been one notable outcome of last week's raids, according to several people interviewed: Employers are reaching out to workers' rights organizations, seeking guidance on how to keep their workers safe. "Some employers are trying to take steps to protect their employees, as best they can,' said Armando Elenes, secretary treasurer of the United Farm Workers. He said his organization and others have been training employers on how to respond if immigration agents show up at their farms or packinghouses. A core message, he said: Don't allow agents on the property if they don't have a signed warrant. Indeed, many of the growers whose properties were raided in Ventura County appear to have understood that; advocates reported that federal agents were turned away from a number of farms because they did not have a warrant. Read more: Eerie silence hangs over Central Coast farm fields in wake of ICE raids In Ventura County, Lucas Zucker, co-executive director of the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy, a group that has often been at odds with growers over issues such as worker pay and protections, underscored the unusual alliance that has forged between farmers and worker advocates. Two days after the raids, Zucker read a statement condemning the immigration sweeps on behalf of Maureen McGuire, chief executive of the Ventura County Farm Bureau, an organization that represents growers. "Farmers care deeply about their workers, not as abstract labor, but as human beings and valued community members who deserve dignity, safety and respect," McGuire said in the statement. "Ventura County agriculture depends on them. California's economy depends on them. America's food system depends on them." Before reading the statement, Zucker evoked light laughter when he told the crowd: 'For those of you familiar [with] Ventura County, you might be surprised to see CAUSE reading a statement from the farm bureau. We clash on many issues, but this is something where we're united and where we're literally speaking with one voice.' 'The agriculture industry and farmworkers are both under attack, with federal agencies showing up at the door," Zucker said later. "Nothing brings people together like a common enemy.'
