Warrington Wolves boss makes Tom Whitehead admission and recruitment hint

SAM Burgess has admitted that, while he values him highly as a player, he may have to let Tom Whitehead leave Warrington Wolves.
The loose forward is the subject of strong interest from Super League leaders and Challenge Cup winners Hull KR, who are believed to have had a transfer bid accepted for his services.

Whitehead's immediate future lies at Salford Red Devils, with the 22-year-old having joined Super League's bottom club on a four-week loan alongside teammate Dan Russell as part of the deal that brought Sam Stone to Warrington.
Longer-term, however, the academy graduate's future appears to lie elsewhere despite him being under contract with The Wire until the end of next year.
Having progressed through the club's academy, Whitehead has made 11 first-team appearances – two of which have come this season – while he has also spent several spells out on loan.
This season alone, he has turned out for London Broncos, Keighley Cougars and Halifax Panthers as well as the Wire reserves but a more permanent departure looks to be in the offing after Burgess admitted he currently struggles to see a path to more regular first-team opportunities for him at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Devastating Lindop injury news confirmed as Burgess reveals fresh concern
Two ticket offers for Warrington Wolves' next home game
'I love Tommy and he's such a great player. I don't know what's out there but I know he's got some interest from other clubs,' he said.
'We value Tommy – he's been at the club since he was 14 and he's a good lad to have around, but sometimes these opportunities can be good for players.
'He's behind a couple of players at 13 here so if opportunities do arise for him, he'll take them.
'We do value him and he's a great lad but we've been pretty open about everything with him.

'He's at Salford for a month and it will be good for him to get some game time. We've been trying to find that time for him all year but we've not had enough opportunity for him.'
Burgess also had his say on the departure of off-season recruit Russell, who will spend the remainder of the season at Salford having played 10 times for Warrington this season.
'It's given him the opportunity to play a bit of first-team. It seemed like the right fit,' the Wire boss said of the back-rower.
'We'll get to see him over a long period of time, which will be good for Dan.'
Sam Burgess open to more Warrington Wolves recruitment
Stone is the second player Warrington have signed from Salford in-season, with scrum-half Marc Sneyd having made the move in March.

And although he played down the prospect of anything immediate, Burgess hinted he may not be the last mid-season recruit to arrive.
Clubs have until August 1 to add players to their ranks immediately and the Wolves head coach has left the possibility of more arrivals on the table.
'I don't know yet. We've still got a little bit of space so we'll see,' he said when asked about the prospect of further recruitment.
'We're keeping everything open, really. With the way things are going for us this year, we're staying versatile.
'We're not actively looking but there is an opportunity if something arises for us.'

Liverpool in talks over deal for Dutch WONDERKID
Liverpool are making big alterations to their defence this summer. Milos Kerkez's arrival from Bournemouth looks imminent - with the 21-year-old set to replace Andy Robertson as the Reds' long-term left-back. For his part, it is becoming increasingly possible that Robbo heads to Atletico Madrid. Fellow left-back Kostas Tsimikas, meanwhile, has been extensively linked with a move away - to either Nottingham Forest or Olympiacos. Advertisement The Transfers Podcast: Liverpool talk to Hato At centre-back, too, there could be sweeping changes. Ibrahima Konate is out of contract in 2026 - and could be sold if no agreement is reached over a renewal. Transfer talk is growing around Jarell Quansah as well, with the 22-year-old tipped to join Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth over £40m - or else move to one of his many Premier League suitors. This rearrangement would leave the Reds quite light on numbers at left-back and centre-back. Liverpool talking to Jorrel Hato And one solution the club are looking into is adding Ajax's left-back / centre-back Jorrel Hato to the ranks. Advertisement That's according to the latest report from Duncan Castles on The Transfers Podcast - in which the journalist claims discussions are underway for the Dutch international to move to Anfield this summer. 'There have been direct conversations between Liverpool and Hato over joining the Premier League champions this summer,' Castles says. 'And those conversations have taken place with the knowledge of Ajax, who are open to selling the player. 'They want to reinforce at centre-back. But probably they cannot say to Hato: 'You come in and you're the starting centre-back' — but he'll get some time in that position. They can also give him time at left-back, where there's quite a fluid situation for them. Advertisement 'Liverpool can push to bring Hato in and have him as a deputy centre-back and deputy left-back, to share that position with Milos Kerkez for the coming season. But it will not be a cheap deal if they're going to make that happen.'

Manchester City fined more than £1million by Premier League over late kick-offs
Manchester City have been fined more than £1million ($1.34m) by the Premier League over multiple breaches of their kick-off and restart obligations for the 2024-25 season. City have accepted and apologised for nine breaches of Premier League rule L.33, relating to late kick-offs throughout the campaign, with the fine for each individually breach incrementally increasing, adding up to £1.03m ($1.38m). Advertisement It comes one year after City were fined more than £2m after breaching L.33 on 22 separate occasions, eight times in 2022-23 and on 14 occasions in 2023-24. 'Rules relating to kick-offs and re-starts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs,' the league said in a statement. 'It also ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule.' The fine related to the kick-off time in City's home fixtures against Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, West Ham United and Newcastle United, along with away matches at Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Ipswich Town. City's home match against Manchester United on December 15, 2024, saw delays at both kick-off and resuming after half-time, totalling three minutes and 42 seconds. City's nine breaches of kick-off and restart obligations: A sanction agreement published by the Premier League states a payment of the figure will be made to the Premier League within 14 days. Tom Lapslie in the squad next year was something many were hoping for
Every Wednesday in the Herald Express, our Torquay United correspondent Richard Hughes takes a sideways look at what's going on in the world of the Gulls. This week, he looks at the legend of Tom Lapslie One look at new chief executive officer Mark Thomas' CV and you can see why he has been employed to take hold of the business side of Torquay United – but he's no Tom Lapslie! Advertisement While the appointment of Thomas and the recent signings of experienced players Manunhe Sundire and Louis Dennis are massive positives, I can't help feeling a bit annoyed that we haven't pushed the boat out to re-sign the legend that is Mr Lapslie, Tiger Tom, the skipper of the tucked-in shirt brigade, Mr 100%, Torquay Till I Die. READ MORE: Torquay United appoint new chief executive officer after international search READ MORE: Wetherspoons quietly axes another item from its menu OK. So I may be going a bit over the top here. But seeing Tom in the squad next year was something many were hoping was going to be a thing – and now he's gone and signed for Chelmsford City, who Torquay will take on again in the National League South next season. Advertisement We were so hopeful. And when Tom stayed in the bay after picking up an injury that kept him out for a year, he started training with the team towards the end of the season. Surely, surely, surely he would be a good option for Paul Wotton. Surely... And then that post on X from Chelmsford, announcing their new signing. I almost had a little cry. The Chelmsford website crowed about Tom. Tom crowed about Chelmsford. 'I'm absolutely delighted to be on board, it's going to be an exciting season. I can't wait to see all the fans in pre-season and get up and running once again. Get behind us this season and most importantly, up the Clarets!' Manager Angelo Harrop (yes, the son of former Torquay assistant manager Geoff Harrop!) said: 'I'm really happy we've managed to get Tom on board, he was one of our top targets this summer. 'He is a player that I know well from his time at Colchester United, I've followed his journey over the past few years. He's a serial winner and will be a big part of the new era and a big part of the project.' Advertisement A serial winner! Yes. In that bad year when Torquay dropped out of the National League – and in the following horrific season in the NLS – it became a thing: We didn't win if Tom wasn't playing. Of course, there will be reasons why Tom has gone back to Essex, where he played with Colchester United before joining the Gulls. Not least because Wotton has brought in a competitive midfielder and wants a smaller squad this season. The Torquay manager is a fan of the player as a person and asked him to go with the squad to Hemel Hempstead Town on the last day of the season, when the Gulls could have, but didn't, win promotion. Perhaps the lure of life back on the east coast was too much for Tom and his family. Perhaps it was fitness. Whatever the reason – legends come and legends go. Just don't come back and haunt us, Lapse. Another player leaving us this week was Oscar Threlkeld, who was placed on the transfer list by Wotton after a season of disappointing performances. The signing of Threlkeld last summer was supposed to be a good one. The midfielder came with vast experience and was handed the captaincy. But it just didn't work out for one reason or another – and the former Plymouth Argyle man has been released from his contract to seek an opportunity elsewhere. Sam Dreyer could be wearing that captain's armband next season then, after wearing it when Threlkeld wasn't in the team last season – after the big news that the much-admired centre-back has signed a year extension to his current deal. Brilliant stuff.
