Indian Women's Hockey team ready to give their all against mighty Argentina

London, June 16 (UNI) After a narrow defeat against Australia, the Indian Women's Hockey Team
is set to give their all against World No. 2 Argentina in their upcoming FIH Pro League 2024-25 (Women) matches in London on June 17 and 18.
Currently ranked 7th with 9 points, India is expecting a tough battle against Argentina, who are placed 2nd on the FIH Pro League (Women) points table.
Speaking about the upcoming matches, Indian Women's Hockey Team Captain Salima Tete said, "Argentina is ranked No. 2 in the world and has won 7 of their 12 FIH Pro League matches so far. Coming into this leg of the league, we knew they would be one of the toughest teams to beat. But
we won't go down without a fight — we'll give it our all in both matches. The team has been training well to take them on and has been working on various strategies to win crucial points against them."
Vice Captain Navneet Kaur agreed, adding, "As you saw, the team gave Australia a tough fight in the last two matches, and we're planning to do the same against Argentina. We'll give it our all and aim to come out victorious. A win against Argentina will not only help us gain points but will also give the team a big morale boost as we head to Antwerp and then Berlin for our matches against Belgium and China."
The Indian Women's Hockey Team will play their first match against Argentina on June 17, followed by the second match on June 18. Both matches will take place at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre in London.
All FIH Pro League 2024-25 (Men and Women) matches will be streamed live on JioCinema and broadcast on Star Sports Select.

Crystal Palace win Community Shield after beating Liverpool on penalties

London, Aug. 11 (UNI)Crystal Palace won their first Community Shield on Sunday, defeating Liverpool 3-2 in a penalty shootout after twice coming from behind in regulation time. Last season's FA Cup winners forced the match to spot-kicks, where goalkeeper Dean Henderson saved from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah sent his effort over the bar. Liverpool's Alisson Becker denied Eberechi Eze and Borna Sosa hit the crossbar, but Oliver Glasner's side held on to claim the trophy. Hugo Ekitike put Liverpool ahead in the fourth minute with a powerful strike, before Jean-Philippe Mateta equalized from the penalty spot in the 17th. Jeremie Frimpong restored Liverpool's lead four minutes later with a lob over Henderson. In the 77th minute, Ismaila Sarr's solo effort brought Palace level again to send the game to penalties. Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted his side must improve defensively ahead of the Premier League season. "It's mixed feelings. If you look at our attacking play against a team that is so compact, it is a bit better than last season," he said. "We created more against a team that is so compact. We conceded two goals and this is something we need to do better. A good team goal for the first one. "We are creating more, but we are conceding more and if you want to win the league you can't concede chances first but also goals," he said. Crystal Palace coach Oliver Glasner praised his players' resilience. "Big credit to the players. Coming back from a very unlucky second goal, decided the game on penalties. A big performance, almost on the same level as Liverpool," he said. "I'm very proud of how the team played today. They did an excellent job," he added. UNI XINHUA RKM

African Nations Championship: Kenya stuns Morocco to put a foot into QFs

Nairobi, Aug. 11 (UNI) Debutant Kenya claimed its second upset at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) when the tournament co-host defeated two-time winner Morocco 1-0 on Sunday in the Kenyan capital, despite playing the entire second half with 10 men. The victory put Kenya on the verge of a historic quarterfinal appearance, while Morocco's hopes of advancing now hinge on its final two group matches. The Atlas Lions, who opened with a 2-0 win over Angola in Group A, created the first clear chance inside 10 minutes when Riahi's header hit the post and was cleared off the line. Spurred on by the home crowd and despite having just 37 percent possession, Kenya took the lead three minutes before halftime when Ogam scored with a stylish finish. The final whistle confirmed not only a famous win for Kenya but one of the biggest shocks in CHAN history, as the co-host reached seven points from its first three matches. A victory over Zambia in its final group game on Aug. 17 would secure Kenya the top spot in the group, while even a draw could be enough to advance. With three points from two matches, Morocco needs to beat Zambia on Aug. 14 to keep its title defense alive. UNI XINHUA RKM

Barca sends warning to title rivals with 5-0 Gamper win

Barcelona, Aug. 11 (UNI) FC Barcelona wrapped up its preparations for the new La Liga season with a 5-0 home win over Italian side Como. The club has again faced a challenging summer, with ongoing financial issues affecting player registration in the first-team squad and renovation work on Camp Nou. As a result, Sunday's traditional Joan Gamper game was played at the nearby Johan Cruyff Stadium, which has a capacity of 6,000. Those in attendance saw a first-half display from Hansi Flick's team that showed its sharpness in front of goal. Fermin Lopez opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a low shot into the bottom corner. He added a second in the 36th minute, firing into the top corner after receiving a pull-back inside the penalty area. Marcus Rashford was involved in setting up Raphinha for Barcelona's third two minutes later, battling into the area and sliding the ball across for the Brazilian to finish from close range. Raphinha then capitalized on a defensive error to win the ball in the Como area and set up Lamine Yamal for a simple tap-in two minutes before halftime. Yamal scored his second three minutes into the second half, placing a first-time shot across goal to finish off a counterattack. The fifth goal completed the scoring, with both teams making changes in the second half as the match lost intensity. Barcelona now turns its attention to the start of the league campaign.
