World Aquatics has announced that the 50s of stroke events will be added to the swimming program at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, sparking excitement and conversation within the swimming community. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board has approved the addition of the men's and women's 50 backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly—six events in total. This expansion will come exactly 40 years after the 50 freestyle was first included in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
In total, the 2028 program will consist of 41 events, highlighting how far the sport has come since its debut at the 1896 Olympic Games in Greece, where only four events were held. Women made their official Olympic swimming debut at the 1912 Stockholm Games, with just two events—the 100 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay. In 2028, there will be seventeen individual men's events, seventeen individual women's events, three men's relays, three women's relays and one mixed relay. And of course, the location of swimming events has changed as well, with the 2028 Olympics set to take place inside SoFi Stadium, which will make it the largest swimming venue in Olympic history.

While new to the Olympic stage, the 50s of stroke have been part of major international meets like the World Championships, which has included the 50s since 2001. Some swimmers have already found success across all three distances of a stroke. Regan Smith, for instance, won the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke recently at the 2024 Short Course World Championships in Budapest.
Change is nothing new for the sport of swimming; it's always evolving. The 2020 Tokyo Games introduced new events to the swimming program, including the mixed 400 medley relay, women's 1500m freestyle and men's 800m freestyle. The addition of the 50s has sparked excitement among Olympians.

The addition of the 50s of stroke to the 2028 Games has thrilled some Olympians—and even played a role in one swimmer's decision to train for another Games. Olympic gold medalist Adam Peaty of Great Britain confirmed he will continue training for 2028, with the 50 breaststroke being part of what influenced his decision. Peaty, 30, is a breaststroke specialist and holds the world records in both the 50 (25.95) and 100 (56.88) breaststroke.
Peaty isn't the only Olympic gold medalist to express approval on social media. Others, including Chad le Clos of South Africa, Sarah Sjöström of Sweden and Michael Andrew of the U.S., have also shown their support on Instagram. With this change, experienced swimmers may have a better chance of extending their careers, as the 50s are less physically demanding due to the shorter distance.

With the addition of the 50s of stroke, some questions have been raised. How will this affect roster caps? For the 2024 Paris Olympics, there was a 26-swimmer cap for each gender. What will the qualifying times be? How will this impact Olympic scheduling? How else will it affect the sport across different levels and competitions?
The swimming community will have to wait and see. However, it's certain that this change will influence how some swimmers train as they prepare for the 2028 Games. For U.S. swimmers, it could present both new challenges and opportunities. Currently, no U.S. swimmer holds a world record in an LCM 50 of any stroke, though the U.S. has shown strong performances in the 50-meter races at other major competitions.

Spain tries to stay upbeat after shootout loss to Portugal in Nations League final

MADRID (AP) — As Cristiano Ronaldo lifted the Nations League trophy and his Portugal teammates celebrated behind him, Spain's players watched in clear disappointment. There was no major letdown after the penalty shootout defeat in Sunday's final in Munich, though. There were no calls for a coaching change. There was no blaming of players who underperformed. The feeling was that Spain is still on the right track. Before leaving the field, coach Luis de la Fuente gathered his players and made sure they remained upbeat and ready to start focusing on next year's World Cup. 'It was time to remind them that we have to be proud of this team, of what we have been doing,' De la Fuente said. 'I reminded the players that I'm proud to have them in the team. Now we have to start focusing on the World Cup. I'm still counting on every one of them, on those who were here and those who couldn't come this time.' Spain is the European champion and as a nation has been enjoying one of its best runs in international soccer. The women's team is the World Cup and Nations League champion. La Roja also won the men's Olympic tournament in France last year, as well as the 2023 Nations League. 'You can't question what this team has been achieving,' De la Fuente said. 'It has been defining an era, a style, and it will continue to do so, not because of me, but because of the players that we have.' After beating France 5-4 in the Nations League semifinals last week, Spain lost the final 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw following extra time. Striker Álvaro Morata was the only player to miss his spot kick. 'Morata is a champion and a reference for us,' De la Fuente said. 'I'm responsible for his missed kick because I'm the one who asked him to take the shot.' Martín Zubimendi (21 minutes) and Mikel Oyazarbal (45) twice gave Spain the lead but Portugal rallied with goals by Nuno Mendes in the 26th and Ronaldo in the 61st. 'We have to overcome this defeat as best we can and value the positive momentum we have had in recent years,' Zubimendi said. 'This time we let the title slip away because of details. We have to keep our feet on the ground. We have been used to winning. Since I joined the national team I've only experienced positive things.' De la Fuente took over from Luis Enrique following defeat to Morocco in the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He recently had his contract renewed by the Spanish soccer federation until 2028 and the next Euros. He is leading a team with a bright future thanks to young stars such as 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Pedri, Gavi, Dean Huijsen and Pau Cubarsí. Spain's next match is in Bulgaria on Sept. 4 in the World Cup qualifiers. ___ AP soccer:

Pat McAfee spars with soccer announcer after missing semifinal of $1 million tournament

Pat McAfee doesn't even have to be somewhere to end up in the middle of a controversy. While broadcasting a seven-on-seven soccer tournament, TST announcers Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez called out McAfee for not being present as the team he owns, the CONCAFA Soccer Club, played a semifinal game where the winner of the final would win $1 million. 'Hold on, we're hyping up Pat McAfee and he's not even here?' Salazar said after the duo mistakenly thought McAfee was in attendance. 'You've got to be here, your team is playing for a million bucks tomorrow. Production, what are you telling me he's got going on? WWE. You know anything about that Herc?' Advertisement 3 Pat McAfee called out broadcasters at TST for making jokes. WWE via Getty Images McAfee, who did take his eponymous show on the road to Cary, N.C. during the week for the beginning of the tournament, was broadcasting at one of WWE's premier events of the year, Money in the Bank, where he worked as an announcer alongside Michael Cole and Wade Barrett. The event featured the shocking return of R-Truth, who attacked John Cena in the main event and cost Cena and Logan Paul their tag team match against Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso. Advertisement It appears that McAfee got word about what they were saying about him on the broadcast. 'TST Commentary talking s–t on me,' McAfee said on X. 'Hope the CONCAFA squad s–t pumps this whole tournament.' 3 Pat McAfee was at Money in the Bank instead of with his soccer team. WWE via Getty Images McAfee then called out the commentary team, saying he 'had no idea what his name was' but that the 'guys a bum on the microphone.' Advertisement McAfee's squad was smashed in the match 5-1 as the Pumas de Alabama were able to clinch a finals berth. 'Heartbroken… Still incredibly prahd of the @ConcafaPod boys. It was a great run. The Pumas team was unbelievable.. good luck to them in the finals tomorrow.' Salazar, who works for ESPN part-time, didn't take the back and forth with McAfee lightly. Advertisement 'Sorry for your loss,' Salazar posted on X in McAfee's direction. 'Big man has some thin skin!' McAfee, a former NFL punter, founded the team and has played occasionally for them. 3 Sebastian Salazar is feuding with Pat McAfee. SebastianSalazar/Instagram 'Heartbroken… Still incredibly prahd of the @ConcafaPod boys,' the ESPN host wrote on X of his squad that is coached by former USMNT goalie Tony Meola. 'It was a great run. The Pumas team was unbelievable.. good luck to them in the finals (Monday).' The league features teams of men and women, where there is a winner-takes-all $1 million prize for both divisions. There is no second-place prize.
