Ilia Topuria obliterates Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 before wild face-off with Paddy Pimblett
In the main event of UFC 317, Topuria, who vacated the featherweight title in February, faced Oliveira for the vacant lightweight belt and finished the former champion in round one.
After a frantic opening few minutes, in which both men landed in the striking exchanges and demonstrated grappling prowess in other moments, Topuria floored Oliveira with a right cross and left hook, leaving the Brazilian staring up at the lights in Las Vegas.
Oliveira, 35, walked onto Topuria's right hand and was seemingly unconscious even before the left hook landed. 'Do Bronx', who held the 155lb title from 2021 until 2022, crumpled to the canvas and was pummeled with one more shot before referee Marc Goddard could step in.
Topuria's victory kept the Spanish-Georgian unbeaten and saw him enter a small club of two-weight UFC champions. The 28-year-old knocked out Alexander Volkanovski last February to win the featherweight belt, before doing the same to Max Holloway in October to retain the gold. He then relinquished it this February, eyeing a move up to 155lb.
Some fans felt that Topuria's victories over Volkanovski and Holloway were the greatest back-to-back wins ever recorded by a UFC fighter. Volkanovski is seen by some as the best featherweight in UFC history, while Holloway is also a former champion and modern great. And Topuria, who predicted that he would knock out both men, dealt Oliveira the same fate after making a similarly prophetic call.
After 'El Matador' collected the lightweight title on Saturday (28 June), his quasi-rival Paddy Pimblett was called into the cage by UFC announcer Joe Rogan.
In 2022, 'Paddy The Baddy' and Topuria were involved in an altercation at the fighter hotel ahead of UFC London, with the latter taking exception to seemingly anti-Georgian tweets by the Liverpudlian.
'We have some f*****g p***y [at ringside],' Topuria said in the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday. 'Whoever is ready for me, I'm here. I don't think he's gonna accept it, but if he thinks he's ready, come on, you p***y.'
'That was a heavy knockout, I'll give you that,' Pimblett responded after entering the Octagon. 'Respect, but you will never knock me out.'
'You'll get knocked out even before the fight,' Topuria laughed, before appearing to shove Pimblett, who is ranked eighth at lightweight.
In the co-main event, Alexandre Pantoja recorded a fourth successful defence of his flyweight title, submitting Kai Kara-France in round two.

In the end Marcus Rashford did get to make his competitive debut for Barcelona as they began their defence of the La Liga title. Formally registered a little after 10.30 on Saturday morning, Barcelona's economic obstacles overcome, he was introduced just after 9pm with 22 minutes left of a sticky and ultimately successful night in Mallorca. By the time he pulled on his shirt and stepped up the line, one of three subs brought on, the temperature had dropped a little, if still not enough, the game was already won, he was up against just nine men, and he got 10 touches. It wasn't much, but it was a start. Earlier than expected, too: Rashford had insisted he was confident but the doubts over him being registered were not resolved until the morning of the match. And so, on 68 minutes, there he was waiting to come on. Playing through the middle with Barcelona already 2-0 up and drifting through a second half that Hansi Flick said he didn't like at all, Rashford produced a couple of neat layoffs, a handful of passes and had two fleeting glimpses of goal. In one, he was a little slow to react, in the other the ball was caught under his feet as he trued to cut back inside. He did though get a close-up glimpse of another moment of magic from Lamine Yamal, who provided the final touch with that Lamine Yamal goal. That's some teammate he has there. A video from training had done the rounds last week in which Lamine Yamal had responded to another bamboozled opponent by declaring: 'I'm unstoppable,' and he didn't waste time lending weight to that claim. His season was just two minutes in, when he twisted, turned, stopped started and escaped into the area, a warning to Johan Mojica and Mallorca – if they needed it – that this wasn't going to be an easy evening. Just five minutes later, he slipped the knife in, clipping in what appeared an easy, almost lazy ball to the far post. There, all alone and from close range, Raphinha headed Barcelona into the lead. There was a kind of stillness about the place, like someone had pressed pause: if had been too simple, the space the Brazilian had too big for it to be real. But, while the referee did pause to check for offside, it was. Mallorca did react, Vedat Muriqi laying off inside the Barcelona area when he might have taken the shot himself. Lamine Yamal wanted his goal, twice sending shots just wide before the break and then bending one over at the start of the second half. Flick though was not happy with what he saw in that second half, and Lamine Yamal would have to wait until the final minute. There had been chances for others too, even if Mallorca resisted pretty well two men down. Raphinha shot wide, Dani Olmo hit a post, Ronald Araújo volleyed wide. Leo Román made a superb save from Olmo and another from Eric García. Rashford joined in but didn't get the chance to test the keeper, a swift one-two with Pedri earning him a raised thumb but not a shot on goal. And then, as the clock went past 90, when he was looking for space to shoot he appeared to tread on the ball, leaving time for just one more moment, and that belonged to Lamine Yamal.

Champions Barcelona ease to opening win at Mallorca
BARCELONA, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Barcelona cruised to a 3-0 win at nine-man Mallorca in their opening LaLiga game of the season on Saturday as England forward Marcus Rashford made his debut off the bench. Raphinha headed home after seven minutes and Ferran Torres doubled the lead in the 23rd minute to put the Spanish champions in command. Mallorca's Manu Morlanes was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Lamine Yamal and Vedat Muriqi was also sent off before halftime. Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, was sent on in the 69th minute for his debut, becoming the first Englishman to play a first-team game for Barcelona since former England striker Gary Lineker in 1989. Yamal powered home Barcelona's third goal in stoppage time.

And he continued his support of the team this weekend as he was seen arriving for Las Vegas ' home preseason clash against the 49ers. Brady oozed cool as he wore a white, retro-style Raiders jacket, which featured the team's logo on his chest and across his back. The jacket also featured black and white trim on the collar and cuffs, as well as the AFC logo on one arm. And while Brady's involvement with the Raiders has given him a chance to have influence on an NFL franchise, it has also complicated his broadcasting role with Fox Sports. He began 10-year, $375million contract with the network last season as their lead NFL analyst. However, due to his Raiders' ownership, he has been forced to follow several special restrictions. Namely, he is not allowed to partake in broadcast production meetings (as is customary for broadcasters), when TV crews meet with head coaches and key players. Ultimately, Brady's first season on air for Fox got mixed reviews from fans, and he recently spoke of the 'growing pains' he experienced in his debut season. 'There was a lot of growing pains through the year for me, just in terms of prep and, obviously, going on-air, and there's things you messed up and there's things that you make mistakes,' Brady said on The Joel Klatt Show. 'And probably a lot like being an NFL quarterback. You think, "I'm prepared and I got and I practiced." You go into a real game in your rookie year, and you're like, "Oh my God, that's a lot faster. What am I doing?" It gets a little better in Week 2 and a little better in Week 3. 'And sometimes you regress a little bit, and sometimes you do things you really like that impress you,' he continued. 'And sometimes you're like you forgot completely going into Week 9, "How did I do that?" or "What was I talking about?"' Following a 4-13 season in 2024, Brady and the rest of the Raiders organization will have more optimism for this campaign following the hiring of coach Pete Carroll, signing of quarterback Geno Smith and addition of running back Ashton Jeanty in the draft. The Raiders open the regular season at the Patriots on September 7.
