Which small car offers the same premium feel as our Audi?
Dear Alex,
My wife and I have bought new Audis for many years. She is soon to change her 2022 A1 and, although there are still many A1s around, Audi has discontinued it. Which similar cars would be suitable replacements? Similar overall size, boot capacity, passenger capacity, with four doors and a petrol or self-charging hybrid engine – in other words, an Audi in another manufacturer's clothing?
–IB
Dear IB,
You're correct that the A1 is being discontinued this year, probably to be replaced by an electric model. But you can still order a brand-new one – although you'll have to be quick to secure one of the last of the A1s to leave the factory.
Or your wife could simply keep her current example – at only three years old, I've no doubt it will have years of life left in it.
If it's the lack of warranty that concerns her, she could always take out an All-In service plan, which includes two years' worth of extra warranty, as well as two years of servicing and MOTs at a main dealer. An added bonus is that keeping the same car, rather than buying an all-new one, is a more sustainable choice.
But if she is set on changing her car and she's too late to order another A1, try a Volkswagen Polo instead. It doesn't have such a prestigious badge, but it's actually the same car underneath, and ticks all the boxes you mention.
In fact, the Polo offers greater boot and rear seat space than the A1, despite being roughly the same size. It's also one of the classiest and most comfortable small cars, so it won't seem much of a downgrade from the Audi.
The Style model provides a few classy touches emulating the higher specification of her current A1.
Alternatively, the sporty-looking R-Line has the option of a more powerful version of the 1.0-litre engine – or an automatic gearbox. The downside is that the R-Line's larger wheels make the Polo a touch less comfortable.
Another option is the Mini Cooper. In the absence of the A1, and since Mini is a subsidiary of BMW, this is just about the only current small car that could be considered a premium-branded product. Inside, the Mini is unashamedly retro but it's also immensely characterful and different from the norm.
In the five-door model, space in the boot and rear seats should be on a par with the A1. The only real downside is that the Mini feels quite firm over bumps, although you can mitigate that by avoiding the Cooper S and opting instead for a Cooper C, which has smaller wheels and softer suspension.
One final thought: try a Honda Jazz. Your wife might sniff at the idea of a Honda as a replacement for an Audi, but the company's latest models have high-quality interiors that feel a cut above its slightly humdrum image.
The latest Jazz is a hybrid, which means it's extremely frugal, while it offers far more space and versatility inside than your wife will be used to in her A1. In addition, the Jazz's reputation for reliability is better than any of the other cars I've mentioned, making it the one to choose if she really wants peace of mind.

We've made huge strides as a team to be in contention at 24 Hours of Le Mans: Charlie Eastwood
Preparations for the Fourth Round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) will get under way on Sunday, with all teams taking part in two three-hour practice sessions. It is the only extended non-timed running they can take advantage of around the famous Circuit de la Sarthe before free practice on Wednesday and then qualifying later that day. After the 2024 edition, Eastwood said he was 'super proud' of his team's efforts despite a chronic lack of straight-line performance starving them of real LMGT3 action. At the end of almost 270 laps and 2,260 competitive miles, they crossed the line 15th in class. However, considerable work has been going on behind the scenes since then to hone and improve Corvette Racing's TF-Sport-run LMGT3 challenger – the Z06 GT3.R – with most of the engineers' focus centring on Le Mans, the blue-riband meeting on the WEC calendar. Eastwood – a class winner at the Le Mans when he was part of the Aston Martin Racing family back in 2020 – continues his partnership with Rui Andrade and Tom Van Rompuy. 'Both Rui and Tom are driving incredibly well,' said Eastwood. 'We love the car, and we are able to extract speed out of it. 'So, from our side, when you look at the line-up, we are pretty strong in that regard. 'We didn't have a great race at Le Mans last year, but as a team and a car, we have made huge strides in lots of areas so, hopefully, it can play into our favour. 'We haven't had the performance or results on our side, but the thing I am really hopeful about is that as a crew, as a team and as a Corvette programme, we're executing some really good races. 'With the energy side of things, we will probably have 27 pit-stops. Our guys have become super quick at tyre changes and the strategy has been very good in the last few events. 'When you add that up across 26 or 27 pit-stops, versus just four during the course of a race, it can really make a massive difference in the pitlane.' The LMGT3 grid is growing for Le Mans from 18 to 24, with a third Iron Lynx Mercedes-AMG and a third Manthey Porsche 911 GT3 R just two of the extra cars joining the permanent FIA WEC line-up.

The Biggest Genesis SUV Yet Is Almost Here
Genesis Is Finally Revealing Some Of The GV90's Looks Genesis is serious about taking on luxury European rivals, and to do that, it needs products in the segments where BMW, Mercedes, and Range Rover are operating. While one side of creating a high-end image is showing one's performance credentials, which Genesis aims to do at Le Mans very soon, another is the luxury element, and the upcoming GV90 will take the Korean brand to new heights, rivaling premium SUVs like the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. Our spies have caught a development mule undergoing testing in Austria, and for the first time, the big SUV is showing its front-end lighting signature properly, confirming a bold new look. The Lighting Signature Will Look Like No Other If these spy shots show a somewhat familiar face, you may be recognizing elements of the Genesis Neolun concept, revealed last year. Like that show car, the prototype in these images has a distinctive lighting signature that sees two LED running lights stretch across the front fascia, pausing over the top of the wheel arches, and resuming at the rear of the front fenders. The bottom DRL deviates slightly near the middle, slanting inward to create a valley that gives the GV90 its Genesis-specific look. A pair of intake grilles above and below the license plate will help with the impression of width, and we suspect there may be additional lighting units on each end of the bumper. Big wheels are a given, as is metallic trim around the glasshouse. We haven't got a great view of the back since there's still a lot of fabric camouflage clad to the car, but another dual-strip lighting design is evident. We expect less chrome than the concept, but the diamond-shaped grille mesh should make production. What To Expect Beneath The Sculpted Skin Source: Autoblog While this particular prototype has conventional doors, earlier spy shots have indicated that the rear-opening coach doors that helped give the Neolun concept so much presence will make production, likely as an option. This could also suggest that a long-wheelbase version will be available, much like the ESV take on the Cadillac Escalade. The GV90 is reportedly codenamed JG1 and is based on a new EV platform called eM, which can be used to underpin SUVs as large as the GV90, along with vehicles small enough for the compact segment. As many as 13 new vehicles are expected to be launched on the architecture by 2030, though that may shift as legislation does. Will it be good enough to beat Audi's upcoming Q9 and rivals from BMW and Mercedes? Time will tell, but the signs are good so far. About the Author Sebastian Cenizo View Profile

Audi's New Electric Crossover Chooses To Be Towed To Prove It's A Good EV
Audi's New Crossover Coupe Will Look Sportier Than The BMW Alternative Audi is preparing to give its Q4 e-tron compact electric crossover a subtle styling update sometime in the middle of next year, likely arriving for the 2027 model year. Long before that happens, engineers are testing the EV in the Austrian Alps, allowing our spies to capture some of the subtle styling updates. Already a looker, the facelifted Q4 will be getting updated graphics for its front and rear lighting signatures inspired by the Q6 e-tron and other new or heavily revised models like the A6. While styling is subjective and not everyone will agree, this writer believes that the new looks will continue to place the Q4 above the iX2 in this segment's beauty pageant. Now, let's address the elephant in the room: why is this development mule not driving on its own power? Testing EV Systems Requires Sharp Slopes While it may appear as if the crossover is being towed due to a malfunction – which is not uncommon – our spies inform us that the EV is being towed by a current-generation Q3 crossover as part of a brake test. The EV is towed to the top of a tall route and then allowed to drive back down on its own, braking all the way down. This tests both the brakes and the regenerative braking system that helps recharge the battery. Since the prototype was reportedly able to drive on its own power, we suspect that Audi may have been testing some battery management software, potentially looking for ways to ensure that an EV with a full battery (hence the tow up the hill) can still use maximum regenerative braking without anything overheating or otherwise malfunctioning. Most Of The Changes For 2027 Will Be Hidden When the 2024 Q4 e-tron update arrived, the changes were mostly beneath the skin. This time, it appears that the outline of the headlight cluster may no longer be just an accent, as close-up images seem to suggest a single lens cover. We also expect some massaging of the front and rear fascias. However, only hardcore Audi geeks will notice things like that. More important changes for what is, as mentioned at the outset, already a good-looking thing, will include shorter charging times, more range, an illuminated logo on each end, and probably some larger screens. Expect more revealing photos throughout the year. As for a release schedule, that is in flux. Audi is reportedly considering building the Q4, Q6, and other e-tron models in the U.S. to dodge tariffs, but that scenario is constantly evolving, so we won't get anything concrete for a while yet.
