, believes the fundamentals of
computer science
remain vital—even as the tech industry undergoes dramatic changes driven by
artificial intelligence
. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Grannis said 'You still have to understand, you know, how computers work, how data stores work.' 'Because that context will allow you to think about how you design something for efficiency and value,' he further added.
Grannis emphasized that a traditional computer science degree or coding program is still a solid foundation for entering the tech workforce.
He said professionals need to prepare for the era of agentic AI, where understanding the data, tools, and systems behind the AI is just as important as the user inputs.
'You're moving from like in the old days, we had to think about it at the application layer and just kind of stop there,' Grannis said. 'Now, we're entering the era of context engineering.'
'So it's not just about prompts,' he added, 'but what data, what tools, what systems does your AI, does your multi-agent system need in order to function correctly?'

While Grannis stands by the value of formal education, he also encouraged job seekers to learn beyond the curriculum. He said today's tech professionals should adopt modern tools and systems to keep pace with AI's rapid evolution.
'That's what I've been doing my entire career,' he said. 'Formal education wouldn't have been enough for me to stay current.'
He gave an example of his approach, revealing that he's encouraging his global team to use AI during an upcoming hackathon. 'We're going to use AI to just generate code, to modify it, to steer it, to refine it,' Grannis explained.
He also warned that mastering prompt engineering alone isn't enough, saying that while it's important, it has started to become "boilerplate code."

Google's realistic 3D conferencing setup comes to life with the help of HP — but it comes with a $25,000 price tag
When Google showcased its 3D conferencing booth — 'Project Starline' — last year at I/O, it took video conferencing to a whole new level. Last month, at Google's developer conference, Project Starline was rebranded as Google Beam. Now, Google is turning its sci-fi technology into a commercial product, with HP becoming the first company to launch a Beam device. However, the price is an eye-watering $25,000. Called HP Dimension, the device is an AI-powered communications solution that makes video calls feel more three-dimensional and lifelike. The system uses a light field display that creates a visual depth effect of the person on the call, and it integrates six cameras into three surrounding bezels for head tracking — essentially becoming a 3D, glasses-free TV. HP says the special light field display renders participants realistically in terms of size, depth, colour, and even eye contact. AI is used to merge multiple 2D video streams of a person into a '3D light field with perfect tracking.' HP Dimension with Google Beam aims to address a major challenge in many workplaces: staying connected in remote settings. HP shares that 73 percent of knowledge workers report wanting to feel more connected to their coworkers. According to internal testing, HP Dimension with Google Beam has effectively addressed workers' connectivity concerns — showing a 28 percent increase in memory recall, a 29 percent rise in non-verbal behaviors displayed, and at least a 14 percent increase in focus on meeting partners. The HP-made Beam model features a large 65-inch display, but eventually, Beam systems will be offered in multiple screen sizes. Google says it is working with companies like Zoom, and organizations including Citadel, Deloitte, Duolingo, Hackensack Meridian Health, NEC, Recruit, and Salesforce have expressed interest and plan to bring the technology to their teams. HP stated that the Dimension will be made available to select customers later this year. The device is aimed at enterprise use — not designed for home consumers. At last year's Google I/O, in a rare opportunity, The Indian Express' Anuj Bhatia tried Google Beam (then still called Project Starline). Here's an excerpt from his hands-on experience with the 3D video calling booth. 'As I walked into the Project Starline demo room, I met Andrew Nartker, General Manager, Google, who has been the lead on this project. Nartker asked me to take a seat, assuring me that he would join me on a call in seconds. I couldn't understand what he meant by that, but I complied. I took the seat, and the screen in front of me lit up, revealing Nartker. He greeted me as if we were meeting face-to-face for the first time in a normal meeting. Within the next few minutes, I completely forgot I had just met Nartker. However, Nartker had gone to the other room and was being projected in front of me through Google's Project Starline.'

New Delhi: American technology giant Google is building its office at London's King's Cross. According to The Times of India report, the 11th floor of the building has been 'taken over' by foxes. Yes, you heard it right. The report might sound bizarre but it's true. According to a report by TOI, the headquarters is still under construction, and foxes have already made their way to the site, causing disruptions in the work. The report further adds that the building is being built at a cost of 1 billion pounds (approximately Rs 11,500 crore). Google is planning to develop a garden on the terrace of the building, intended to attract certain animals — but before those animals could arrive, the foxes got there first. The issue of foxes is not new. Reports suggest that the construction of the office has been facing disruptions for the past three years due to the presence of foxes. According to a report by The Guardian, one of the foxes in the building is so swift that one moment it's spotted on the fifth floor and the next moment in the garden on the 11th floor. No one has been able to catch it so far. Here are some of the key details of the office: This office has been designed by Thomas Heatherwick Studio and Bjarke Ingels Group. It will have seating capacity for 7,000 people. It is said that the garden being developed at the site has become home to several foxes. The garden construction involved the use of 40,000 tons of soil and 250 trees. As per the report, the garden was originally designed for bees, bats, birds, and butterflies — not for foxes. The area also includes spaces for dining, deck chairs, a fitness zone, and an indoor pool. Google Doesn't See It as a Big Problem According to the report, Google has downplayed the issue. The company stated that the presence of foxes on working sites is common and their sightings are rare. It also mentioned that the foxes haven't significantly affected operations.
