He offered an honest outlook for the team. "As of right now, New York has around $46 million in second-apron space. However, that doesn't account for the new deals we expect Mikal Bridges and Mitchell Robinson to sign between now and next summer," Quinn wrote. "If both are long-term Knicks, New York will blow past the second apron and only have a minimum to offer. If James is open to the minimum, and that's already a stretch, wouldn't he be likelier to take it in Cleveland than New York? In this scenario, the Knicks would be fighting an uphill battle." Assuming James does become a free agent next offseason, quite a few teams would have interest in him. Among those teams could be the Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and Dallas Mavericks. There is also a chance that he could have interest in signing with whoever drafts his younger son, Bryce James, who is eligible for the 2026 NBA Draft. During the 2024-25 NBA season, he averaged 24.4 points per game to go along with 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and a steal. In addition, he also shot 51.3 percent from the floor and 37.6 percent from three-point range. At 40 years old, James has not talked about when he plans to retire. It's possible the 2025-26 season could be his last, but playing another year still seems to be the most likely scenario. Expect to continue hearing rumors about James and his future throughout the entire year. New York will also likely continue being connected as a possible landing spot for him next offseason. On Sunday, Finkelstein and Staph predicted that the Mets would land Pirates closer David Bednar and setup man Dennis Santana for a package of infielder Ronny Mauricio, center field prospect Nick Morabito, and pitching prospects Jack Wenniger and RJ Gordon. "With Diaz, Bednar, Santana, Raley, Soto, Reed Garrett, Ryne Stanek, and Jose Butto, the Mets bullpen would be absolutely loaded," wrote Finkelstein and Staph. "Prying two arms may prove to be too costly, especially as the Mets will likely want to stay away from the very top of their farm system for relief pitchers. Still, the Mets can offer a package with a combination of arms to replenish their system and bats that can help sooner than later that could entice the Pirates." Bednar broke a two-month streak of not allowing an earned run on Monday night, but still picked up his 17th save of the season. Meanwhile, Santana owns a 1.39 ERA and minuscule 0.84 WHIP in 45 1/3 innings. Parting ways with Mauricio, in particular, is a risky gambit for the Mets. New York Giants could recoup draft pick from Miami if Darren Waller produces
Veteran tight end Darren Waller surprised many in early July when he informed the New York Giants of his plans to unretire, but only if they shipped him off to the Miami Dolphins. The Giants obliged. General manager Joe Schoen traded Waller and a conditional 2027 seventh-round pick to Miami in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft. But that deal is not entirely set in stone. Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports that if Waller records 50-plus receptions in 2025, the Giants will recoup their seventh-round pick in the 2027 NFL draft. In 12 games (11 starts) with New York, Waller recorded 52 receptions for 552 yards and one touchdown, so it is plausible he produces similar numbers with the Dolphins, and the Giants get their pick back. Waller initially informed the Giants of his retirement in June 2024, a year removed from the team acquiring him in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. However, he later revealed that his initial decision to retire came much sooner than that. "I knew I was retiring when we played in Buffalo," Waller said on The Side You Don't See podcast. "It was a game where it was really controversial because one of the guys held me at the end, and they didn't call it. "It was in the first quarter of the game. We were running this counter lead running play, and I'm kind of like leading through the hole like I'm a fullback, and the play is working. But I sit down on the sideline after like a drive where we ran like three times and I'm like, what the (expletive) am I doing with my life? I'm out here playing fullback. I don't even want to do this (expletive) anymore." What changed in Waller's mind is unclear.
