Karnataka reports two more Covid deaths, toll rises to 9 in 2025: Health officials alerted

In addition to the fatalities, the state also logged 57 fresh Covid-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the cumulative number of infections for 2025 to 894. The health department maintained that surveillance and preventive efforts remain active across Karnataka to curb the spread of the virus.
'The disease continues to evolve, and sustained vigilance remains critical,' said the department in a bulletin. It emphasised a multi-pronged strategy involving early detection, timely containment, and continuous monitoring of Covid variants through a combination of clinical, laboratory, and community surveillance.
Healthcare workers were reminded of their crucial role in mitigating outbreaks, especially as they remain among the most vulnerable if safety protocols aren't followed while managing patients. The advisory reiterated that proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential.

The department issued fresh directives for medical staff: all SARI cases and 5% of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) cases should be referred for RT-PCR testing at designated facilities. Testing protocols must be followed as per the latest guidelines issued by the National Health Mission (NHM), and samples must be sent the same day to ensure timely processing.
Health workers were also advised to pay close attention to high-risk groups—children, pregnant women, and the elderly—and ensure mandatory testing if they exhibit symptoms. Further, any ILI or SARI case with co-morbidities must be reported under the P-Form on the IDSP-IHIP platform for better data tracking and response coordination.

Noida: The district hospital recorded its highest OPD footfall on Monday, with over 4,366 patients turning up after a three-day holiday break, surpassing last year's record of 4,100. Dr Ajay Rana, acting chief medical superintendent, said a requirement has been sent to the state health department. "A demand for 17 more doctors has been sent. Additionally, two more ultrasound machines, one laparoscopy surgeon and equipment, and an MRI machine are also on the list of requirements," he said. At present, the hospital has two functional USG machines, along with CT and X-Ray machines. MRI is not available. According to senior officials, the hospital has 41 permanent doctors, against a requirement of at least 20 more to strengthen paediatrics, gynaecology, medicine, surgery and orthopaedics. "The ideal doctor-to-patient ratio is considered 1:4 to 1:6. At the district hospital, the ratio is far lower. Doctors have to manage emergency, OPDs and inpatients across three shifts. While daytime is manageable, nights are a major challenge," said an official. Officials also said that with the OPD shut on Aug 15 and 17 and operating for only half a day on Janmashtami, many patients had turned to emergency services, further straining resources.

US Pediatricians' New Covid-19 Shot Recommendations Differ From CDC Advice
New York: For the first time in 30 years, the American Academy of Pediatrics is substantially diverging from U.S. government vaccine recommendations. The group's new COVID-19 recommendations - released Tuesday - come amid a tumultuous year for public health, as vaccine skeptics have come into power in the new Trump administration and government guidance has become increasingly confusing. This isn't going to help, acknowledged Dr. James Campbell, vice chair of the AAP infectious disease committee. "It is going to be somewhat confusing. But our opinion is we need to make the right choices for children to protect them," he added. The AAP is strongly recommending COVID-19 shots for children ages 6 months to 2 years. Shots also are advised for older children if parents want their kids vaccinated, the AAP said. That differs from guidance established under US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which doesn't recommend the shots for healthy children of any age but says kids may get the shots in consultation with physicians. Children ages 6 months to 2 years are at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19, and it was important that recommendations continue to emphasize the need for them to get vaccinated, said Campbell, a University of Maryland infectious diseases expert. Vaccinations also are recommended for older children who have chronic lung diseases or other conditions that put them at higher risk for severe disease, the AAP said. The 95-year-old Itasca, Illinois-based organization has issued vaccination recommendations for children since the 1930s. In 1995, it synced its advice with recommendations made by the federal government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There have been a few small differences between AAP and CDC recommendations since then. For example, the AAP has advised that children get HPV vaccinations starting at age 9; the CDC says that's OK but has emphasized vaccinations at ages 11 and 12. But in 30 years, this is the first time the recommendations have differed "in a significant or substantial way," Campbell said. Until recently, the CDC - following recommendations by infectious disease experts - has been urging annual COVID-19 boosters for all Americans ages 6 months and older. But in May, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that COVID-19 vaccines are no longer recommended for healthy children and pregnant women. A few days later, the CDC issued language that healthy children may get the shots, but that there was no longer a "should" recommendation. A CDC expert panel in June was set to make recommendations about the fall shots. But Kennedy bypassed the group, and also decided to dismiss the 17-member panel and appoint his own, smaller panel, that included vaccine skeptics. Kennedy's new vaccine panel has yet to vote on COVID-19 shot recommendations. The panel did endorse continuing to recommend fall flu vaccinations, but also made a decision that led to another notable difference with the AAP. The new advisory panel voted that people should only get flu vaccines that are packaged as single doses and do not contain the preservative thimerosal. The AAP said there is no evidence of harm from the preservative, and recommended doctors use any licensed flu vaccine product that's appropriate for the patient.

NHM employees begin indefinite strike, healthcare services impacted
Pune: Nearly 20,000 of 39,500 National Health Mission (NHM) employees, which include 1,500 from Pune district, began an indefinite strike across Maharashtra on Tuesday over what they called state's failure to implement a govt resolution on regularisation of posts. The strike is organised under the banner of the 'NHM Integration Committee, Maharashtra', with multiple health workers' unions coming together for the first time. Employees from technical and non-technical departments, including maternity wards, neonatal units, ICU, vaccination, and drug distribution boycotted work. The disruption is expected to severely impact public healthcare services across the state. Committee president Vijay Gaikwad in a statement on Tuesday said the GR issued on March 14, 2024, mandated regularisation of contract employees with over 10 years of service. Despite repeated assurances by the authorities, it has not been implemented even after 17 months, he said.
