TV fans flabbergasted after star actually flies plane in 'insane' finale

Metro26-05-2025

TV viewers were left stunned on Sunday night when the star of a hit documentary series actually flew a plane – Tom Cruise style.
Canadian writer and actor Nathan Fielder, 42, had already stunned fans of his series The Rehearsal after spending millions of dollars to stage a plane crash.
Fielder was then accused of costing an aspiring singer $10,000 (£7,300) after she auditioned for a 'fake talent show' as part of The Rehearsal's season two.
It's safe to say that Fielder, who rose to fame as the star of American docuseries Nathan For You, is willing to push boundaries and prod buttons for his comedy.
But despite his antics down the years, and in recent weeks, even some of Fielder's biggest fans would never have expected him to actually fly a passenger plane.
The second season of The Rehearsal has seen Fielder tackling the issue of airline safety and the relationships between pilots – to complete his task, he actually secured a pilot's license.
'When I first began this project,' he narrated in the season two finale episode, 'I had decided there was no better way to understand pilots than to become one myself.
'But it became clear very quickly that I was not a natural at this. Especially when it came to landing the plane. I was apparently such an abnormal case that they started passing me around to different instructors.'
And it turns out that Fielder not being 'a natural' made for gripping TV that viewers have been unable to get over, with many left on the edges of their seats.

@ShaveStop was stunned: 'Damn, who the hell knew that this Memorial Day weekend Nathan Fielder would one up Tom Cruise when it came to plane stunts?'
@CharlyTodd concurred: 'I so badly want to know the details of the insurance policies HBO has had to secure on behalf of Nathan Fielder. I am still stunned at him flying that plane.'
@JwyeNFL said: 'I could watch an entire series just on Nathan Fielder negotiating with HBO on all of his ridiculous ideas. How they agreed to let him fly a plane with 150+ people on board is wild.'
Fielder has become known in the world of TV comedy for his ability to blur reality and peoples' perceptions, often staging elaborate schemes and pranks to do so.
@ColtonStock really rated the episode: 'The Rehearsal S2 finale is straight up one of the most impressive feats I've ever seen – somehow a more insane plane stunt than the one in Mission: Impossible.'
At points during the season, Fielder also stepped into the shoes of Sully Sullenberger, the pilot who successfully landed a crashing plane in the Hudson River in New York, saving everyone on board.
The bumper season finale also dances around the question of whether Fielder's trouble with flying might be a result of undiagnosed autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
However, while The Curse actor (which he starred in alongside Emma Stone) learns his diagnosis, the answer is never revealed, leaving viewers to wonder if the test came back positive or negative. More Trending
The Rehearsal fans have wondered on social media over whether the test and diagnosis were genuine, or if Fielder was playing up to peoples' speculations that his awkward persona is a result of ASD.
Minia15 said: 'I would find it very surprising if the joke is that Nathan is negatively representing the ability of people with autism. The bit only works in my mind if he is on the spectrum.'
However, ReedyMarsh commented: 'There's a lot of good that'll come out of this and I reckon he does care, but his milking of any opportunity to be funny means that he's somewhat detached in the context of his shows.'

Wake up, babe, new Dot Wordsworth just dropped

On X, that old-fashioned site still used by people like me, someone called Henri tweeted: 'babe wake up Waste Land new hard as hell cover just dropped'. Appended was a Penguin Classics cover illustrated with an apocalyptic picture which I think was a work from 2010 called The Harrowing of Hell, by David Adams. It turned out to have been put together with the help of an online device called Penguin Classics Cover Generator, which allows you to use your chosen picture to design a paperback. The site has no connection with Penguin. But 'Wake up, babe, new [something] just dropped' is a catchphrase or meme that has been around since 2020. Drop, a verb favoured by the trendy to mean 'arrive' or 'be published or released' has been used since the 1980s for records, but is still thought to be hip. Drop is having a creative time at the moment. People who use X are worried about drop shipping. Handy gadgets are advertised for sale, but the advertiser doesn't stock the dog-toy, or whatever the thing is. He merely gets a supplier (perhaps in China) to deliver it to the buyer and makes money from his mark-up as middle-man. Another thing that drops is the other shoe, for which we wait. 'Waiting for the other shoe to drop' must date from the advent of flat-living, and expresses the suspense with which downstairs neighbours await the next percussion after the warning shot, as the man upstairs prepares for bed. There is no recognised begetter of the phrase. It became popular between the wars, when Pont's cartoon 'Life in the flat above' showed the family upstairs jumping and thumping, with the daughter pulling a little wagon unstably piled with pots and pans and even the dog wearing boots. The indefatigably reliable Michael Quinion in his World Wide Words blog traced an American quotation from 1921: 'If nine out of ten of us hadn't heard that 'drop that other shoe' chestnut and molded our lives accordingly for the sake of the neighbor below us, what would be the end of us?' Today, I think we've seen what.

The truth about Sydney Sweeney's bathwater

In the 2004 film Mean Girls Ms Norbury (Tina Fey) cries to her High School students: 'Girls! You've got to stop calling each other sluts and whores!' Do we? I ask because Sydney Sweeney, an American actress, is selling her bathwater to men with unfathomable desires. No woman would buy it. We have an infinite supply. Selling bathwater is hard. It's the logistics. How do you distribute it? By fishing trawler? By pipe? Sweeney, who has marketing skills – and this is all marketing, she designed a Ford Mustang, which can't be drunk, last year – has partnered, as they say, with a soap company, which will incorporate drips (dribbles?) of her bathwater into a soap. At least that is what we are told. I would use the water from the potatoes, but I am Generation X and we would never speak about such things in public. Gen Z has no such inhibitions, though I sense they are having less sex than we did. Instead, they do this. To the goods: Dr Squatch Sydney's Bathwater Bliss is 'a very real, very limited-edition soap made with my actual [as opposed to theoretical?] bathwater'. Sweeney does it because she is a very pure capitalist, and also an idiot, and she rationalises it like this: 'When your fans start asking for your bathwater, you can either ignore it or turn it into a bar of Dr Squatch soap.' The publicity material has her sitting in a bath against a backdrop of generic Alps. If you squint you might see Maria von Trapp. The soap, which has pine and fir 'elements' and smells of 'a morning wood', is, she says, 'unforgettable'.

Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins address feud rumours together

After weeks of intense speculation, Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins have unequivocally put the feud rumours to bed. The White Lotus co-stars who played doomed lovers Chelsea and Rick in season three of the hit HBO series saw the high-stakes drama of the fictional Thailand resort bleed into real life after fans started wondering if there was a rift between the pair. After castmate Jason Isaacs alluded to 'drama' on the set, people started fuelling the fire by pointing out Walton had unfollowed Aimee on Instagram and praised the very SNL sketch which the Sex Education star had called out as 'mean' and 'unfunny' for mocking the appearance of her teeth (he later deleted his comments). As rumours whirled, just this week, The Fallout star shut down an interview with The Times when asked to address the feud multiple times. 'There is no conversation to be had about that. Sharing politics on social media — it's in a vacuum,' he said. After being asked a final time, the 53-year-old added: 'What the f**k, Ed [Potton]! Come on, buddy. Wow.' Now, in their first joint interview with Variety since the falling out rumours reached their pinnacle, they have cleared the record once and for all. Walton, who has spent many of the past weeks working intensive hours on the Fallout set, shared: 'There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me.' Then looking at Aimee, added: 'This is Goldie Hawn. This is Meg Ryan. She can do anything, and she will. You watch what the next 20 years of her experience will be. I'll be on an island, I think Greece. But she's special. There is no feud. 'She is love and I know that I am that to her. We care about each other very deeply.' And explained that he would 'never' speak for both of them, hence he didn't discuss the issue with The Times. Specifically, Walton claimed that The Times interviewer had tried to compare his and Aimee's teeth and asked if they had bonded over them on set, which left him 'disgusted and flabbergasted'. Aimee echoed the shock, saying: 'How horrible!' The 31-year-old star then said Instagram was 'irrelevant' and neither of them 'gave a s***e', encouraging people to discuss the show's storyline and characters instead. 'Eventually I just started to sit back and watch these people making something out of absolutely nothing,' Aimee added while Walton called himself a 'grown-a** man'. Then, he explained that he has always found the end of intense projects of this nature difficult (especially considering his personal ties to this one) and had let Aimee know he was 'processing saying goodbye'. By the end of their chat, Walton had followed Aimee on Instagram once more. He concluded by calling the whole situation 'ridiculous'. 'It's just a part of me just saying goodbye to this character so that now Aimee and I will be friends for f**king ever,' he said. As for what's next for Goggins, in a recent interview with Metro, he discussed his ethos with allowing himself to embrace 'the unknown'. More Trending 'I didn't know where my life was going before Fallout. I didn't know before White Lotus. And I suppose, at my age, that's the best place to be: comfortable in the unknown,' he said. As for the Bafta winner, she has plenty of projects in the pipeline, including a new series with Adolescence's breakout star Owen Cooper called Film Club and a second season of her hit show, Daddy Issues.
