Hay Festival announces return of expert panel series The News Review for 2025
Hay Festival will partner with The Independent once again to reprise The News Review, a series of morning panels with renowned guests.
Spread over 11 days, festival-goers will be treated to an overflowing itinerary of over 600 events in Hay-on-Wye between 22 May and 1 June 2025. The star-studded lineup includes Yulia Navalnaya, Michael Sheen, Jameela Jamil, and many more.
The Independent will host nine sessions of The News Review each morning, with the publication's journalists exploring current affairs with leading figures from politics, science, the arts and comedy.
Joining TheIndependent to dissect the breaking news of the day will be historians David Olusoga and Kehinde Andrews, comedian Sara Pascoe, broadcasters Jon Sopel and Anushka Asthan and world-renowned philosopher AC Grayling.
Journalists Lyse Doucet and Misha Glenny will address the shifting nuances of geopolitics while the subject of climate science will be discussed by academic Friederike Otto.
Hay Festival president Stephen Fry highlighted the festival's important role in this year's tumultuous social and political climate, stating: 'Besides the fun and joy of gathering to share stories, it is also the antidote to disinformation and division.'

Special guests at Hay this year include Good Omens star Michael Sheen, The Good Place actor Jameela Jamil, artist Grayson Perry, comedian Miranda Hart, musician and author Paloma Faith, ITV presenter Lorraine Kelly and activist Katie Piper. They will be joined by British screenwriter and producer Jesse Armstrong, one of the minds behind Succession, Peep Show and Four Lions.
As well as its usual literary offerings, the Festival will launch its first cinema section with the MUBI cinema hosting screenings of Bergman Island; How to Have Sex; Fallen Leaves; Queer; First Cow; Alcarràs; Dahomey; Decision to Leave; Aftersun; Priscilla; Perfect Days; Petite Maman; and The Worst Person in the World.
They will be followed by discussion and analysis by screenwriters including Hot Milk's Rebecca Lenkiewicz, The Power's Sarah Quintrell, and His Dark Materials producer Jane Tranter. Conclave novelist Robert Harris will also discuss the Oscar-nominated adaptation of his work.

Dakota Johnson has laid the blame for Madame Web's dismal showing at the box office squarely at the feet of people at studios who 'don't have a creative bone in their body'. Johnson played Cassandra Webb, a New York paramedic who crosses paths with three young women, played by Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O'Connor, whom she must protect from a mysterious adversary who wants them destroyed. 'It wasn't my fault,' Johnson told the Los Angeles Times about the film flopping. 'There's this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don't have a creative bone in their body. And it's really hard to make art that way. Or to make something entertaining that way.' 'And I think unfortunately with Madame Web, it started out as something and turned into something else. And I was just sort of along for the ride at that point. But that happens. Bigger-budget movies fail all the time.' The Daddio actor has spoken previously about 'drastic changes' made to the script after she had signed on, as well as her unhappiness at creative choices being made by executives at Hollywood. 'Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms,' she said in March last year. 'My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they're not. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bulls***. Even if films start to be made with [artificial intelligence], humans aren't going to f***ing want to see those.' The Independent has reached out to Sony Pictures for comment. However, Johnson may have relented on never starring in superhero films. She said last year that she 'probably will never do anything like it again because I don't make sense in that world'. She has told the LA Times now that she doesn't 'have a Band-Aid over it'. 'There's no part of me that's like, 'Oh, I'll never do that again' to anything. I've done even tiny movies that didn't do well. Who cares?' The Independent's Clarrise Loughrey labeled Madame Web 'a desperate comic book misfire that seems embarrassed by its own existence,' in her one-star review. Johnson will be seen next in Celine Song's Materialists, where she stars opposite Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, as a New York City matchmaker who finds herself 'torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex'. The A24 film, set to be released internationally on 15 August, has garnered much buzz online, where fans have celebrated it for being a return to the style of the classic 90s' romantic comedy.

Khadiyah ‘KD' Lewis death: Former Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star dies aged 44
Former Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta cast member Khadiyah 'KD' Lewis has died aged 44. Lewis died May 30, her brother Jay told The Shade Room. A cause of death has not been revealed. 'This has been an extremely emotionally devastating time. All prayers, condolences, and well wishes are sincerely appreciated,' Jay told the outlet. Lewis appeared on seasons three and four of the VH1 reality show, which follows aspiring rappers juggling their careers and personal lives. She was first seen sporadically in season three when she was dating rapper Yung Joc. Then she joined the cast as a supporting character for season four. The Independent has reached out to Lewis's representative for comment. Born March 31, 1981, in Oklahoma City, Lewis was a business and tax consultant. A funeral service will be held on June 14 in her hometown. Lewis's other brother, Elijah Inegbedion, shared a tribute video honoring his sister, writing: 'Been at a lost for words for some days now. And to think that I'll ever have the words to describe the person you've been and the legacy that you left behind would be erroneous. 'Long Live my sister Khadiyah Lewis,' he continued. 'You left behind a legacy most individuals can only dream of. 'Thank you for loving me the way you did and always having my back no matter what. God blessed me when he made me your baby brother and for that I am eternally thankful. You are forever on my mind and in my heart. I love you!' Fans have shared their condolences after learning the sad news. 'Im sorry for your loss sending you lots of love your way,' one person commented on Inegbedion's video. 'She was so pretty. I remember watching that season with her and young Joc it was crazy,' someone wrote on Instagram. 'She was so beautiful this is so sad,' another shared. Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin break up for ‘final' time after eight years together, say reports
After eight years in an on-off relationship, Coldplay singer Chris Martin and Fifty Shades of Grey actor Dakota Johnson have reportedly broken up for good. Martin, 48, and Johnson, 35, have been dating since 2017, a relationship that included a multiple-year engagement. However, it has often been overshadowed by breakup rumours.
