ROURKELA: Local branch manager of Bandhan Bank and an agent of IDBI Bank were among 14 persons arrested by the Rourkela police for their association with an organised crime syndicate involved in operation of mule bank accounts.
The crime syndicate, based out of Rourkela, was primarily involved in procurement and operation of mule bank accounts to facilitate transfer of illegal proceeds in cyber crime and money laundering activities in India and abroad.
The seizure included 30 Aadhaar and 10 PAN cards used in fake accounts, 17 passbooks of different banks, four cheque books, one laptop, 15 mobile phones and a car. Acting on a tip off, a team of the Cyber Crime & Economic Offences police station with help of local police arrested the 14 in two phases for acting as conduits for the gang, Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani said.

The decomposed body of a man, which was found hanging from a tree in a park in north Delhi's Inderlok area, has been identified as that of a 43-year-old rickshaw puller, an official said on Wednesday. A police team found a decomposed body, estimated to be four to five days old, suspended from a branch about 10 feet high with a rope.(Screengrab/X/@ANI) On Monday, at around 6 pm, the police received information regarding a male body hanging from a tree inside the kachra park in Shehzada Bagh, he said. During local inquiries, a rickshaw puller named Sushil identified the deceased as Manoj, who was also a rickshaw puller and allegedly an alcoholic, the police said, adding that efforts are being made to trace his family. A team rushed to the spot and found a decomposed body, estimated to be four to five days old, suspended from a branch about 10 feet high with a rope, a senior police officer said. The crime team and forensic experts were called to the site for inspection. During a personal search of the body, police recovered a mobile phone and a copy of an Aadhaar card identifying him as Manoj, a resident of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, the officer mentioned further. The body has been preserved at the Sabzi Mandi mortuary for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymala Bagchi said that the Election Commission has listed 11 acceptable documents for the ongoing exercise, compared to only seven in 2003. A group of petitioners have challenged the voter roll revision in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections, expected in October or November. They have raised concerns about the exclusion of Aadhaar cards as standalone valid proof for the revision process, contending that Aadhaar is the most widely held identity document. Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the petitioners, argued on Wednesday that while the number of permissible documents had increased, most had low coverage in Bihar. He added that only 1% to 2% voters held passports in the state. Read more. A soldier, Havildar Ankit Kumar, was killed in a gunfight as the Army foiled an infiltration attempt by suspected militants along the Line of Control in Uri, in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. The Army had killed two suspected militants in the same area a few days ago, unidentified officials said. Search operations after the gunfight are underway. This was the fourth Army casualty in the line of duty in Jammu and Kashmir over the past week. In a letter to the High Court's registrar general, Ali's mother, Nachiran Bibi, described the police firing as 'unprovoked, excessive and disproportionate'. The Supreme Court has cancelled the bail granted to wrestler Sushil Kumar in an alleged murder case. It ordered the two-time Olympic medallist to surrender within a week. Kumar, along with 17 others, has been accused of fatally assaulting Sagar Dhankar, a former junior national wrestling champion, and his friends in May 2021 because of an alleged property dispute. The incident took place at the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. Kumar was arrested in May 2021 and was granted bail by the Delhi High Court in March.
