Musk's Boring Company unveils Music City Loop tunnel project for Nashville
Why it matters: Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee touted the project as an innovative approach to addressing Nashville's traffic congestion at no cost to taxpayers.
The big picture: The project has an ambitious timeline of completing the 10-mile route in less than two years.
The tunnel would move vehicles at warp speed as well. A trip from downtown to the airport would be about eight minutes, according to Boring Company CEO Steve Davis.
What he's saying:"The Boring Company is developing the most cutting edge transit systems in the world," Lee said at a press event at the airport Hilton.
"This is the most dynamic city in the country. People are coming here by the millions, and now with the Music City Loop, the Boring Company is set to transform the airport-to-downtown travel experience."
Zoom in: Davis said the Boring Company looks for places where its tunnel projects can be useful, as well as cities that are welcoming.
He said Nashville checked both of those boxes. The company plans to start hiring in the coming days, he said.
Yes, but: Although Davis lauded the city for being welcoming, Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell was not in attendance at the press conference. O'Connell told Axios over the weekend he had questions about the project.
Details such as the costs for construction and operations remain unclear.
Sources say the state Building Commission plans to meet in the coming days to give initial approval for the project. It's unclear what approvals could be required of Metro leaders.
Zoom out: The company has had some success with a smaller tunnel project in Las Vegas. The company touts the Vegas Loop, which opened in 2021 for transporting more 3 million passengers.
Projects pursued in other places, including Washington D.C., Chicago and Charlotte did not materialize.
Between the lines: Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Stephanie Coleman hailed the Music City Loop as complimenting the Choose How You Move transportation plan, approved by voters last year.

NEWS Meta's Twitter rival has hit 400 million monthly users, closing the gap with X on mobile. BY Meta's Threads is on a roll. The social networking app is now home to more than 400 million monthly active users, Meta shared with Fast Company on Tuesday. That's 50 million more than just a few months ago, and a long way from the 175 million it had around its first birthday last summer. Launched in July 2023 with a record-breaking 100 million signups in its first days, Threads quickly positioned itself as Meta's best shot at challenging Elon Musk's X. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, made no secret of his ambitions back then, setting a goal of one billion users. 'Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn't nailed it,' he wrote at the time. 'Hopefully we will.' Today's numbers suggest that bet is paying off, although that one billion goal is still a bit far away. Neck and neck on mobile A big part of the story now is just how close Threads is getting to X when it comes to daily use on phones. Data from Similarweb shows that Threads had 115.1 million daily active mobile users in June—that's up a whopping 128% from last year. X still has the edge at 132 million, but it's sliding, with daily actives down more than 15% year over year. In the U.S., the gap's even smaller: 15.3 million daily mobile users for Threads versus 22.9 million for X, according to Similarweb. X does not regularly share user data and did not respond to a request for more details about its current user base. On the web? That's where Threads is still lagging. X is pulled in 145.8 million daily visits in June compared to just 6.9 million for Threads. Bluesky, the smaller rival in this race, is even closer to Threads in web traffic than you might expect—though its daily mobile audience is tiny by comparison. Finding its own vibe Threads isn't trying to be a carbon copy of X. Meta says 63% of posts are text-only, and people who use Threads every day follow less than half the same accounts they do on Instagram. That means new communities are springing up—from 'Bookthreads' for literature fans to basketball and music hubs—with a friendlier, less combative tone than you might find on some other platforms. The app's also been adding features fast: trending topics, live sports scores, a developer API for automated posts, and deeper connections to the fediverse so people can interact with Mastodon users and other decentralized networks. Why now? Threads' momentum comes at a time when X is dealing with advertiser skepticism and growing competition from smaller players like Bluesky. Social media as a whole is also more fragmented than ever, with different groups heading to Discord, LinkedIn, Reddit, or just group chats. While four hundred million users is still a long way from Zuckerberg's billion-user dream, with mobile usage nearly matching X's, Threads isn't just chasing anymore. It's catching up. Musk threatens to sue Apple over X, Grok absence on recommended apps list
Elon Musk threatened to sue Apple on Monday for not including his social platform X or artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok on the App Store's list of recommended apps. 'Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either 𝕏 or Grok in your 'Must Have' section when 𝕏 is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps?' Musk wrote on X. 'Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know.' Several hours later, he escalated the dispute, suggesting xAI would take 'immediate legal action' against the iPhone maker. The tech billionaire's AI firm xAI acquired X for $45 billion in March. 'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,' Musk added. A Community Note attached to his own post noted that DeepSeek reached the top spot on Apple's App Store in January. The #1 spot is currently held by OpenAI's ChatGPT. Musk has long had a contentious relationship with OpenAI, which he helped found in 2015. Since his departure, the tech mogul has sued the AI firm over its close partnership with Microsoft and its push to transform into a for-profit company. Sam Altman Slams Elon Musk Over New Threat Against Apple
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called out Elon Musk after the chief executive of X threatened to sue Apple, accusing the tech company of 'relentlessly promoting' the owner of the popular platform ChatGPT at the expense of his xAI company. 'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,' Musk wrote Monday night. 'xAI will take immediate legal action.' Musk did not cite any evidence to back up the allegations he laid out in a series of late-night posts on X, formerly Twitter, in which he also accused the company of 'making it impossible for any other AI company to succeed by relentlessly promoting OpenAI in every way possible' and suggesting the iPhone maker was 'playing politics.' Apple has yet to address his claims. Altman shot back at his fellow billionaire in an early Tuesday social media post, claiming his accusations were 'remarkable ... given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like.' Altman cited a February 2023 story by Platformer, tech journalist Casey Newton's newsletter, reporting that X engineers at the time built a system to promote Musk's tweets to the social media site's entire user base after Musk expressed frustration about one of his posts getting less engagement than a post by former President Joe Biden.
