Anger as 'roadworks lead to absolute gridlock' in Woolwich and Plumstead
From today (August 11) to September 5, lanes of the A206 southbound are closed with temporary traffic lights on Pettman Crescent.
Greenwich council warned, 'there will be delays', but it has been called 'a complete and utter disaster'.
One person said: 'What a complete and utter disaster - absolute gridlock.
'How did no one see this coming and get diversions in place? How long are those of us who rely on the buses in Woolwich going to have to put up with this?'
Another described it as 'Busmageddon' due to the number of buses they saw stuck in traffic queues.
Another posted a video of "standstill" traffic in Woolwich they said were 'due to the road works… at Pettman Crescent'.
Some say they had missed appointments due to delays they describe as stretching to an hour and a half.
One said on a local social media page: 'Absolute chaos. Nothing is moving, heard one bus driver on another route state he was hour and a half late!'
Another said: 'It is not just delays. The traffic is dead. Not moving a single bit.'
Works are underway to replace bridge parapets on the A206 Pettman Crescent in West Thamesmead, Plumstead and Glyndon.
During the works period, lanes are closed on the A206 southbound at the junction of Western Way and Pettman Crescent.
There are also temporary traffic lights on Pettman Crescent to manage diversions for Plumstead High Street and Woolwich.
Pettman Crescent will be completely closed at the junction with Plumstead High Street between 28 and 31 August, with diversions in place.
The council says works will affect 12 bus routes: the N53, 96, 99, 177, 180, 422, 469, N1, 122, 244, 301 and 380.
The works have been scheduled by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to happen during the school summer holidays.
Full details of the works can be found on the council's website.
It adds that reports about the traffic management can be made to Metro Traffic Services by calling 01303 265700.
The council has been contacted for comment.

The plan expands on Tesla's work in Texas, where it currently sells power to year, Tesla's energy segment, which sells solar panels and battery storage, made $1.5 billion, a 93% increase from the year before. Motor insurers charge into EV market as competition accelerates
Motor insurers are ramping up competition in the electric vehicle (EV) sector as battery-electric models move further into the mainstream, according to new analysis from Consumer Intelligence. Its data shows that 11 new insurance products began quoting for EVs on a major price comparison website in 2024, compared with just three or four for petrol, diesel or hybrid models. New offerings increasingly include tailored features such as charging equipment cover, EV-specific breakdown support and even carbon offsetting options. The shift in underwriting appetite comes amid buoyant sales. Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) figures reveal that new BEV registrations rose 35.2% in the first four months of 2025 versus the same period last year, while petrol sales dropped 10% and diesel fell 13.2%. After sharp premium rises in 2023, rates are now easing as repair network capacity expands, turnround times improve, and richer claims data allows for more accurate pricing. According to Consumer Intelligence, the risk profiles of EV drivers are now converging with petrol and diesel motorists. In some cases, insurers have cut EV premiums by up to 18%. One insurer increased its EV quotability by 40 percentage points, gaining a 12% rise in its share of the top five quote positions. EV quotability is the frequency with which an insurer returns a valid price for an electric vehicle on a price comparison site, It is a key measure of underwriting appetite and market availability. However, EV premiums remain comparatively high, reflecting costlier claims caused by specialist repair needs and battery complexities. Regional variation persists, with April prices higher in the South East than the North West due to differences in congestion, theft and claims rates. 'As BEVs become more mainstream, insurers are no longer treating them as niche risks,' said Ian Hughes, chief executive of Consumer Intelligence. 'That's creating space for more confident, competitive pricing. While sales remain just short of the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate target of 22%, the trajectory is unmistakable — the shift is accelerating and insurers are responding.'
