Doctor reveals simple diet hack that can help you sleep better at night: 'Do it two hours before bed for the best night's sleep'

A doctor has claimed a spoonful of peanut butter before bed can help you sleep better throughout the night.
This is because it contains tryptophan—an amino acid vital for the production of serotonin—'which can have a calming effect on your brain' said Dr Kunal Sood.
Some studies have suggested different foods with tryptophan can help improve sleep quality.
But it is also high in healthy fats which prevent blood sugar level spikes, which can be a cause for waking up during the night, added the US-based anesthesiologist.
'Lastly peanut butter also contains magnesium which has been shown to also relax you and improve sleep quality,' he said in a recent video posted on TikTok.
These claims are backed up by research on other foods, but a study in 2024 found peanut butter didn't have a positive effect on sleep.
However, the study involved 40 firefighters who commonly have sleep difficulties due to their work shifts, so the results may differ for the average person.
Dr Sood was reacting to a video posted two years ago by a 29-year-old woman from Pennsylvania in the US that amassed 1.8million views.
In the other video, Kat Eilonwy said: 'So, apparently eating a spoon of peanut butter before bed helps drop your cortisol levels to help you sleep.'
Cortisol, often known as the 'stress hormone' can disrupt sleep if levels are elevated in the evening.
Previously researchers have found those who regularly eat peanut butter have lower cortisol levels—so, the snack may help you wind down before sleeping.
The study also found those who ate peanut butter reported lower levels of anxiety and depression.
In the comment section of her video, one user said: 'I discovered that a spoonful before bedtime helps me sleep through the night.'
Another user wrote: 'Every night I take one slice of bread, slap some PB on it and fold it in half. I'm always asleep within 30 minutes of eating that.'
A third user added: 'It works! I've been doing it for three months, doing it to help my stomach when I couldn't sleep and noticed I slept better after a spoonful of peanut butter.'
After posting his video, Dr Sood also received comments from social media user saying it has helped them.
One user said: 'I have trouble sleeping almost every night. Peanut butter has helped me a lot.'
Meanwhile another commented: 'Wow okay good reason to eat peanut butter.'
A third commented: 'I thought I was the only one who did this!'
Other health benefits of peanut butter include a lower risk of type two diabetes and colorectal cancer.
However, at the end of the video, Dr Sood added: 'It is worth noting while peanut butter may help some people sleep, it is not for everyone.'

A California woman's been left disfigured after flames 'exploded' in her face while making s'mores over an outdoor firepit. Viana Poggi, 18, was enjoying a fun summer night on July 6 with her cousin Alaina Arbiso when chaos unfolded before their eyes. While using a cement tabletop firepit, flames suddenly blew toward Poggi, leaving her with blistering burns on her face and arms. Her cousin Arbiso said all she could remember was how fast everything happened in that terrifying moment, before she pushed her relative into a nearby pool. Arbiso said: 'Within, like, a millisecond, you don't even see it coming - you have no time to react. It just happened.' After pushing Poggi into the water, Arbiso then grabbed a hose and sprayed down the flames spreading on the table. Another family member was also hit by the dangerous flames, but only Poggi was severely injured. When she got to a local burns center, staff asked Poggi about what was used to fuel the firepit. Poggi said: 'Even when I got to the ER, I just said I got hit by fire, and they asked me, "Was it rubbing alcohol?" Because it's so common for people to be burned that way.' A friend of hers Alexandra Welsh, who's a trauma nurse in the emergency room, was shocked after seeing someone she knew arrive with such intense injuries. Welsh said: 'I work at a trauma center, so I see a lot of traumatic injuries come in, but it is so different when it is someone who you think of as a little sister.' Despite the freak accident impacting her life, Poggi, who's been left with scars and burn marks, decided to make the best of it. She documented her recovery on TikTok, where she showed herself wearing a hospital gown when she was still covered in bandages. Poggi said: 'I always remember it could have been worse. I try to keep a good attitude.' The teen's due to start college soon at the University of San Francisco but, because of the burns, she's also preparing for several procedures to help with her recover. A GoFundMe page was set up by Arbiso to help her cousin with medical expenses while she embarked on the next chapter of her life. Arbiso wrote about Poggi: 'With the big move coming, multiple reconstruction surgeries, and a long emotional/physical recovery in her foreseeable future, [she's] going to need all the help she can get.' Poggi hoped that her unfortunate experience would make other people think twice before they used specific types of firepits. She said: 'I really want people to know the danger of using an alcohol-fueled pit because they are so common. We owned, I think, three of them.' There were several types of tabletop alcohol-fueled firepit available to buy online and in stores. Some were fueled by gel fuel, wood, wood pellets, and propane. Last year, multiple types of the vessel were recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The recall on the popular brand Colsen's pits warned that 'alcohol flames can be invisible and lead to flame jetting when refilling the firepit reservoir'.

The desperation that comes with a bout of poor sleep is like nothing else. Brain fog, extreme fatigue and constant irritability are all traits of the regularly underslept. In the long term, so are obesity, high blood pressure and low mood – and we're increasingly aware of it. Scarcely more than a third of us say that the amount of sleep we get each night is 'good', a recent survey from Nuffield Health suggests. Enter melatonin, the seemingly natural supplement with the promise to cure this very modern ailment. Melatonin is the hormone that our own brains produce to send us off to sleep each night. Your body naturally produces less melatonin as you age, with the process beginning around the age of 40 and escalates dramatically after 70. In its synthetic form, filled into little white capsules or mixed into gummies, melatonin is available in supermarkets and on Amazon in the United States. It's also prescribed in Britain to people aged over 55 who have insomnia, and to children with ADHD or autism who struggle to sleep. Plenty more of us take melatonin occasionally for jet lag, even though you can't buy it over the counter in this country. 'When I see someone in clinic who is taking melatonin, the majority of the time, they've obtained it in this way rather than having been prescribed it,' says Dr Alanna Hare, a consultant in sleep and ventilation at Royal Brompton Hospital. There is a thriving middle-class black market for melatonin, which is legal to bring over from other countries or buy from online pharmacies, provided you don't sell it on. Dr Hare has 'no doubt' that the desperate parents of children awaiting diagnoses for ADHD or autism find melatonin for them in this way too. Dr Cassie Coleman, a consultant paediatrician with a specialism in neurodiversity and child mental health, agrees. 'It's very common for parents to present at my clinic and tell me, with a huge amount of guilt, that they've accessed melatonin and are giving it to their children who either have ADHD or autism or are awaiting a diagnosis,' she says. 'Many parents are given some melatonin by their friends who also have neurodivergent children, after expressing just how exhausted they feel. Having a child who struggles to sleep can really upend family life, and it's often a massive source of anxiety and frustration for the child themselves too.' When it comes to the effects of melatonin for families, 'the word 'life changing' is common,' says Dr Coleman. Melatonin supplements are considered 'very safe' to take, physically speaking, says sleep expert Dr Sophie Bostock. But while many people swear by it to help them drift off at night, research suggests that unless you have a specific sleep disorder, melatonin pills or chews are little more than placebo. So what's the truth about this highly sought-after sleep aid? What is melatonin? Melatonin is one of many hormones produced in your brain, with hormones being chemical messengers that signal different parts of your body to carry out different hormones. Specifically, melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, a tiny pinecone-shaped node (hence the name) that sits right in the middle of your brain. Other parts of the body like the eyes, skin and gut also produce some melatonin, but far less than is made by your pineal gland.

Continuous glucose monitors are in vogue. But do you really need to track your blood sugar?

A quarter-size device that tracks the rise and fall of sugar in your blood is the latest source of hope — and hype — in the growing buzz around wearable health technology. Continuous glucose monitors, small patches that provide 24-hour insight into concentrations of sugar in the blood, could be a tool for Americans to 'take control over their own health,' Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently told federal lawmakers. 'They can take responsibility,' Kennedy said. 'They can begin to make good judgments about their diet, about their physical activity, about the way they live their lives.' The devices have lifesaving benefits for people with diabetes, the disease caused when blood sugar remains high because their bodies don't make enough insulin or become resistant to it. The condition, which affects more than 38 million people in the U.S., raises the risk of serious health problems such as heart and kidney disease and vision loss. But the devices have surged in popularity among people without diabetes. Sales have been driven by high-profile marketers such as Casey Means, the nominee for U.S. surgeon general. There's scant evidence the monitors are useful for people with normal blood sugar levels, said Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrine specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Healthy bodies can effectively regulate glucose after meals and provide the energy they need to function. Glucose monitors may lead people to misinterpret normal swings in blood sugar that happen after eating or activity. In addition, the devices can be 'notoriously inaccurate,' providing misleading readings, she said. 'The problem with wearing these is that you can just be zooming in on and creating pathology when it's not there,' Dushay said. Here's what you need to know about the devices: Here's what a continuous glucose monitor does The device is a small patch, about the size of two stacked quarters, usually placed on the upper arm or stomach. It uses a needle to painlessly pierce the skin for a tiny sensor. The sensor measures the glucose in fluid under the skin, delivering a signal every few minutes to a phone app or a handheld display. The apps typically record blood sugar levels and help people track the foods they eat and how they impact those levels. When healthy people eat a meal that contains carbohydrates, their blood sugar rises, peaks and falls in response to the food. A healthy fasting blood glucose level for a person without diabetes is roughly 70 milligrams per deciliter to 99 milligrams per deciliter. A range from 100 to 126 milligrams per deciliter indicates prediabetes and above 126 milligrams per deciliter indicates diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. In adults without diabetes, blood sugar levels can climb to 140 milligrams per deciliter or more within an hour of a meal, before falling back to baseline levels within two or three hours, according to the association. It's a sign the body is processing sugar normally. Continuous glucose monitors have been available since the late 1990s For decades, these devices were available only for people with diabetes. The monitors revolutionized care by allowing more precise adjustment of insulin used to treat diabetes and giving people the ability to modify meals and activity more accurately. Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first over-the-counter monitors. Since then, many companies have emerged to market them, claiming to provide intensive, individualized health monitoring. Cost is generally about $100 a month. They've really caught on with consumers curious about how food and activity affect their blood sugar levels. For instance, Noom, the weight-loss and fitness app, launched a blood glucose feature last year that has proven extremely popular, said Alexander Fabry, a company executive. 'Of the people who are using a CGM, the vast majority of them don't have a diabetes diagnosis,' he said. Who can use the monitors? The devices have been lifesaving for people with diabetes. And they can be helpful for people with risk factors for the disease, including obesity, prediabetes, a history of gestational diabetes or a family history of the condition. The devices can allow users to see how specific food and activity choices affect their blood sugar in near real-time, said Dr. Alaina Vidmar, a pediatric obesity specialist at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. 'After a large meal, you may watch your blood sugar go up and sort of learn something about yourself,' Vidmar said. 'For example, I drink a sugar-sweetened soda and my blood sugar goes up really high, really fast. And maybe I don't feel as good, right?' What are the cautions? People without risk factors for diabetes may turn to the monitors just because they're curious, said Dr. David Kessler. A former FDA commissioner, Kessler doesn't have diabetes, but he wore a monitor for a couple months during research for his recent book, 'Diet, Drugs and Dopamine.' 'I think it's a very interesting tool to experiment with if you're so inclined,' Kessler said. But, he noted, the devices can't be used to diagnose or treat disease. Even experts don't agree on how to interpret or provide health advice for people without diabetes based on blood sugar data. 'No one knows what's optimal in the nondiabetic state,' he said. Before using a monitor, Dushay asks patients to consider their motives. 'What do you think you're going to get from the data?' she said.
